Favouritism, bullying and off humour. Then the CEO gets onto Twitter

301

SFA referee Charlie Richmond yesterday told the BBC he was resigning from his role as a top class official citing reasons that will horrify and resonate with many of you.  Speaking last night he said:

“Referee’s committee members, who you would expect to get support from, have told me across the table ‘this is nothing to do with your refereeing ability, it’s nothing to do with your experience but you won’t be getting high profile games because you’re not seen as a team member.

“The fact that you don’t share the same conversation or the same humour doesn’t mean to say you are the bad penny.

“The fact that you don’t share the same conversation or the same humour doesn’t mean to say you are the bad penny.

“In any walk of life a natural progression takes place but the person underneath doesn’t need to stab someone in in the back to advance quicker.

“I received a phone call telling me to watch what I was saying in dressing rooms because this is 10am on a Monday and it’s filtered back already.

“Much more disappointing, is that they are believing that information.”

Coming hard on the heels of last season’s bullying allegations by an official and nature of what was regarded by some as suitable material to joke about in the workplace, the SFA sounds like an old boys club.

SFA chief executive, Stewart Regan, tweeted in response: “Referee appointments are based on performance. Would prefer to see consistent under performers ‘retire’ without feeling need to blame others”.

Ouch.  Listen to her.

Charlie Richmond may or may not be a rubbish referee, Mr Regan could easily persuade me of the former, but that is not the point.  It is not the responsibility of the employee to manage the performance review process.  If the organisation manages this process well, the employee becomes an active part of proceedings, even when performance is worthy of criticism.

This situation has not been managed well. It is a corporate failure at an organisation which has been dogged by corporate governance issues for years.

The SFA have been accredited as Investors In People.  The scenario where a senior referee complains to the media about favouritism while the chief executive retorts online about “consistent under performers” (sic) is surely the antithesis of good Investors In People.  It smacks of lousy people management.

If you have underperforming staff, make it clear to them where they are going wrong.  Do so in an inclusive way, ensure those charged with performance communication are able to do so without accusations of favouritism (Richmond) or bullying (Craven), and for goodness sake, ensure the chief exec doesn’t get bitchy on Twitter.

If you or I accused the SFA of behaviour like this we would be dismissed as irrelevant but the organisation needs to take action to ensure there are no more accusations of bullying, favouritism, selective-humour-bonding and executives disrespecting officials on Twitter.

Can you imagine what the very same people would be doing today if Neil Lennon had a go at a referee on Twitter?

    ASonofDan,

do you honestly think they will fail to raise investment for a debt free newco ?

  2. Awe_Naw_No_Annoni_Oan_Anaw_Noo on

I think we will see Craig Whytes Duff & Phelps use this as the opportunity/excuse to liquidate Rangers 1873 citing the SPL changing the rules at this sensitive juncture as being the final nail in the coffin.

This allows the creditors to fight over Ibrox and Murray (Ticketus and HMRC)

And will leave the way clear for Rangers 2012 to play at Hampden having bought the buddies SPL share.

    Hail Hail

  3. So let’s everyone mull this over till tomorrow…

much more smoke and mirrors to come before the fog clears…

    Hold yer fire!

  4. The Honest Mistake loves being first on

So step one in the plan has been revealed.

Does anybody know what step two is?

    I’ll give it a go.

Newco takes the Scottish football authorities to court saying that the rules aren’t fair.

Scottish teams get kicked out of europe next season. Rules get changed and the switcheroo is complete.

Am I far off the mark?

  5. By the way all the “I’ll no watch Celtic again” p1sh is being spouted by guys who probably don’t even go to games.

By all means lets bhoycott away games, but I go to watch the Celtic TEAM on the park and I will ALWAYS go to Paradise to watch my team.

The board will need to be urged in the right direction by the support as usual.

    Bhoycott ALL remianing games

  7. Saving the Hun will be done under the auspices of the “TV Deal”. The unsigned TV Deal. The TV Deal that for Aberdeen, Motherwell and Dundee Utd last year represented under 50% of what their income was for ticket sales in the same period.

Perhaps it is time these money grabbing cretins sitting on the boards of SPL clubs were reminded where their cash flow REALLY comes from.

That is from people coming through the gates.

If this goes through the product we pay to watch is a farce and believe me not just Celtic fans think this way.

  8. i knew these dirty cheats would never be allowed to die thats why i kept my mouth firmly closed on their matters. scotland is a corrupt little hellhole and the quicker we resign the better. I will refuse to watch celtic in an SPL that allows cheating from top to bottom.

How much expressed in a percentage are the commercial deals compared to the hun debt ?

What does this do for future business relationships ?

Have you been sitting in the sun today ?

    Hail HAil

  10. In fact, why dont they have a big new co party, all debt ridden teams go bust, start again in the New co SPL next year, clean slate for all the teams with debt!!

A couple of zany seasons with half a dozen teams on minus 10, would be a right laugh, eh Mr Doncaster ya frampton!

  11. themightyquinn on

    Nobody does it better!

Makes me feel sad for the rest!

    Nobody does it!

    Half as good as hoops!

    Celtic are the best!

  12. Looks like they are preliminarily clearing the way for the Newco back into the SPL

Still there are other crucial things yet to play out

Maybe we should wait and see

A positive verdict for HMRC in the BTC a negative verdict for Mintys 2 contracts will affect any new rules decisions and Uefa have still to show their hand

  13. Ask yourself this if it was Celtic in this position what would have the reaction / assistance / rule changing been.

Exactly no we would have been happily left to die.

What about investors who buy Celtic shares but can´t afford to go to Celtic games as they would lose to much by actually attending a game ?

Your beginning to sound like a deranged hun now.

    Hail Hail

  15. Fortunes Favour Mibbes on

Am not finding myself too concerned at this unsurprising turn. Its more like poetry in motion.

The SFA have tried to avoid censure for their laughable administration by letting the SPL bend the rules instead of them.

The arrogance of these peepil must surely lead to their downfall. Its ALL coming out now.

UEFA and FIFA have nothing to lose by making a world-wide example of Scottish football and the SFA and SPL have had it coming just as much as the huns.

This is our ticket out of here imo.

  16. James Forrest is Neil Lennon! We are ALL Neil Lennon!

Fair enough, but answer my question.

When rangers are making losses of £2.5 Million a month just now, who out of the 3 bidders can run them with a further 75% reduction in their income for the next 3 years.

  17. Just gonna give PL a well jingle with my new proposed spending approach for Celtic. It’s simple really… just don’t pay anyone, take a load of debt fae the bank, avoid our taxes, buy any player we like (I recommended messi, why not eh? no like we have to worry about actually paying) and when it all goes pete tong just make a new co. Simple really.

Now, naebudy steal ma idea! Or al have ye (in court obviously, cos part of ma plan is to sue anyone a can)

  18. StMichaelsBhoy2 on

I’ve just sent a couple of tweets to UEFA, linking to the SPL proposals on their website, hopefully to bring to their attention the stitch-up being prepared.

I’d send a tweet to Michel Platini as well, but there’s a few Platini’s on twitter, and I’m not sure which is the genuine one.

Could anyone write a pro forma letter we could all email to UEFA? They’re our only hope of stopping this Masonic corruption.

  19. Aw naw was Fergus a member of the SFA? Scottish Government? Our other Scottish league club. The fans saved Celtic not the establishment.

So let’s everyone mull this over till tomorrow…

I agree with you re mulling it over to a degree. That said, it’s my second post in the last 20 minutes or so! :-)

Some may say it’s misplaced and time may prove those doubters right, but on this issue I have faith in our board.

They must be aware of the strength of feeling on this one. This isn’t going a few more grand for Stephen Fletcher, this is the future of the game in the most bigoted little country in the world. More importantly than that, this is the future of Celtic Football Club they have in their hands.

The season tickets of many on here depend on their actions. That’s money and of course money is important. However, it is the years of history, of standing up for what is right. The years of tradition of our and their forefathers. The ethos, the essence of Celtic.

Scottish Football appears to be out to destroy itself. Our board must save Celtic. If it does, then it may just save Scottish football too. I can live happily without the latter but Celtic means so much to me and you and millions who may not see this blog.

Peter, Dermot and others, please don’t let us down. For what it’s worth, I don’t think you will.

  22. Awe_Naw_

A deranged hun? because I support my team.

I will be renewing my season ticket no matter who is in the SPL.

“For we only know that theres gonnae be a show and the Glasgow Celtic will be there.”

Others can do what they want, I will be there supporting my team next season.

    HH

  23. Can I just make a point to those stating they won’t renew season tickets/support Celtic under certain circumstances? Supporting your team and supporting the league/organizations are two entirely separate factors. You should never stop supporting Celtic, regardless of the actions of the SFA/SPL, and other football clubs. You can support Celtic and protest against the decisions being made elsewhere at the same time, it isn’t a choice of one or the other.

    Faithful through and through.

  24. This is no normal point in our in our clubs histoy this is a UNIQUE MOMENT, Our leaders have a straight choice to make.

    1. Do they want to be remembered in song i.e the next verse in the Willie Maley song where the will be remembered For standing up for us and the sporting integrity of our game. In Celtic folklore for generations to come along with Maley, McGrory ,the 7-1 team, Big Jock & the LIONS ,Martin O,Neil ,Henrik , Neil Francis Lennon and too many more to mention.

Orrrrrr do they want to be remembered in the same breath as those who sought to hinder us and who didn’t care about right or wrong .Fair or cheating . But only about the survival of the scurge of our game RFC, i.e Moonbeams, smith ,farry ,peat ,ogilvie ,dallas ,gollum salmond & many many others who are against us.

The choice is yours to make Dermot, Peter & the rest of our board ,It is a choice that will be remembered for Centuries PLEASSSSSSSE make the right choice and I promise yous WILL NEVER WALK ALONE.

    Over to you Bhoys.

Sorry for rant but cheats charter is a simple choice ,

    Sporting Integrity V CHEATING

    Just listening to above link.

On 22mins a stupid hurtin hun comes on and states that back in 2008 the league WASN’T extended due to Celtics trip to Japan.

Keep telling the same lie and the huns will keep promoting it as the truth.

So to any lurking stupid hurtin hun…

The league was extended to try and help the hun and it would have been extended twice if Celtic allowed it.

My god they even wanted to move the scottish cup to a wednesday evening to help the huns.

That not extending the season nonsense fair bursts ma chops!!

  27. once again guys, there’s a fair bit of gun jumping [albeit understandable] on the blog…the situation has grown to the point where it cannot now be controlled by the SFA/SPL/RFC(ia)/whoever…for example, how will HMRC react to a newoldco?

  28. My Dear,Dear Kojo…

Ah see we’re wearing the Beanie Hat,set at a jaunty angle, this fine afternoon…

Is there a breeze, tae send the yellow propellers a-whirlin’ …?

A NewcoGA wid still be the GA,tae the unwashed adherents of their Parish…

    Take away their history…?

Not in their minds…and on that score ah wid totally agree wi’ Them.

To compare the situation of the GA,with that faced by Airdrie and L**ds,would not be appropriate..

Airdrie never had an auspicious history, and their adherents were merely Huns-withoot-the-Bus fare..

So,perhaps some of their number delved behind the couch, and found some loose change, among Granny’s Auld Dentures, and the fusty square sausages..

While others found different activities to fill the Saturday afternoons, such as pilgrimages to Coatbrig,to lay flowers and teddy bears in tribute,at the birthplace of the Toon’s Maist Famous Son and Guru,The Blessed Philvis……

Due to their financial chaos,Leeds fell rapidly from the Top Tier to the Third Tier of English Football, before their major restructuring event..

They faced huge problems in getting promoted to the Second Tier, and their fan-base duly declined…

NewcoGA would not face this difficulty.

If they were not parachuted directly into the SPL,their rapid promotion to this division would be assured..

No..The GA must be obliterated,Ip*x levelled, and replaced by a shiny Green and White Asda Superstore…

Leave the spouting of concentrated urea tae oor Good Friend……

    Skelped-For-Talkin’-Bull….

    Right ? Right !

    Yer Pal….Who thinks you’re just swell !

  29. Allow these regs in

    newco Hun shoe in

personally not for me. … They can stick it up their erchie

Not for me … Ill find another interest

  30. Evening Celts, there is understandably a lot of anger re the proposed regulation changes.

I’m waiting to see what CFC have to say on this, there are supporters of clubs in the SPL who won’t stand for it, our clubs have an obligation to look after our interests and indeed their shareholders.

Let’s see where it takes us, hopefully out of a corrupt league.
