Federate with England or lose your talented teens

815

Celtic players’ participation in the World Cup ended yesterday as Efe Ambrose’ Nigeria were eventually overpowered by France.  Baring injury, Efe will be in Champions League duty in Iceland two weeks from today, which leaves the player little scope to rest weary limbs for the season ahead.

The fitness management of Efe and Emilio Izaguirre throughout the season will need to take a different path from the rest of the squad.  The search for cover for both players should be a priority.

It’s a pity for Dundee United, and for Scottish football, that Ryan Gauld seems on the verge of leaving for Sporting Lisbon at only 18-years-old.  United have seen enough to know they have a genuine talent on their hands, but the player’s glory years all lie ahead of him.

United will continue to lose genuine teenage talent until they, along with other aspiring Scottish clubs, get a change of environment.  If the Scottish Premiership folded into the English Football League structure Ryan Gould would remain in Tayside for years to come.

    Hamiltontim,

AOK with me, but I thought the whole idea of this blog was to allow expression of opinions, “insightful” or not.

I’d probably trust the DR before that balloon.

If anyone wants to ask anything about the youngsters give the famous Paul The Tim a shout on twitter – that lad got off a plane from Kazakhstan last year and went straight to a youth match.

  8. I’ve got worries for Charlie Muldini who, obviously does ‘cliques’

what with his comments about – “Roy Keane is exactly the type of

manager this club needs!” – type of stuff?

Very reminiscent of a modern day Peter Grant ass-licker

    imho.

John Collins will be monumental in the dressing room imho

I don’t know much about the Ronny guy but, his comments this morn

about Celtic being a bigger club than Athletico Madrid – Agreed 100%

I hope that Ronny can put his finger on why there is so much financial

wastage at the club ye know – tens of thousands pounds being paid out

and, nothing being produced from it?

Then again, maybe Ronny has been appointed as manager as a consequence

of the findings of Jim McGinness’s forensic audit of the football dept?

But hey, what would an eejit like me know?

  9. Bhoys, is anyone staying in Aberdour tomorrow night? And more importantly are any of the local establishments showing the Hoops v Krasnodar???? There’s a few of us staying in the Aberdour hotel and would be good to meet up before the Golf on Friday HH

It is an unfortunate side effect of recognising reality that you will have to appraise it for what it is.

I tried to think of analogies but they don’t work well here.

In a bad marriage, you try to fix it before you give up on it, and that is what you are asking us to do.

When you are selling a cheap product, you do not do a Gerald Ratner, and tell everyone it is worthless tat, and, again, that is a view you are advising against in your post.

But those analogies do not work here because what is wrong with Scottish football is not that Scots are rubbish, it is that we operate in a restricted market. It is not that we are prevented from competing in the top competitions, the CL and Europa Leagues are open to Scottish clubs, albeit smaller numbers of them. However, prior to competing with other top clubs, we get to compete with smaller boys to gather pennies from a wedding scramble while English clubs get to divi up the takings from The Great Train Robbery before we go to auction for the prize of the CL trophy. If we are lucky we might get a bid in for a last 16 trophy slot with all of our money spent, before one dozy English club has located its wallet, but the next Italian or Spanish club will outspend us without dipping into its reserves (of money).

We have people in positions of power in the Scottish game and, meanwhile, will try to get the best deal on offer for our clubs. But, I hope they have a clear view that this is not an issue that can change by the efforts of Scottish people alone; we are just not that influential. Telling everyone that Scottish football is great only works if Scottish football IS great. It was true from the mid 60s to the mid 80s. It has not been true since and , because of Bosman and TV market monies, it cannot repeat the trick because of changed conditions.

We have one biggish club , one dead giant, and a collection of small clubs that would struggle to play 2 rounds in European competition.

Even if we all discovered oil in all our back gardens tomorrow, we cannot buck the trends of small population = limited commercial market = you are prey for the carrion.

  11. Not that it matters to us – 2nd rangers trying to broker a deal to get Daly off the books, but with his knees floating somewhere between his pelvis and his ankle I’d expect to see him take his money and sit in the stand. His game’s a bogey.

    setting free the bears

Where Scotland holds an advantage over other similiary sized markets is that we have a number of clubs with significant supporter bases. This alone ensures that we have a stronger bargaining position compared to most other small nations. I am sure this has helped bring Mr Lawwell to the table for these discussions and indeed I am sure he has done a lot of the pushing.

That there have been discussions is no sign that change will occur in the short to medium term and I think we have to be mindful about the damage caused to the domestic game the more this is brought to the fore publicly on a regular basis.

Until it is imminent lets work to improve what we have. It is far from beyond the realms of possibility that we will see a strong Aberdeen, Dundee United, Hearts and Hibs in the ~short term future…probably more likely than seeing structural change in European football.

  18. Some times the blog goes into a North Korea type mode, people grass you up to the leader, and the leader give you a warning (with out any proof that you have done any thing wrong) because you have upset some of the guys who have been here from day one, or one or two of his pals, that I totally get, what I don’t get is the ones that grassed never admit to it, so I now try and keep a low profile and keep myself to my self as on a PC or I pad you never know Whois who.

It’s a good blog but like most Huns get in and that goes with the territory such is life, I often wonder if it was a Hun or a fellow Tim who grassed me up?

I hope it was the former, then again do I?
