Feels like time for an inquest

626

It’s been so long since we lost a goal it feels like there should be an inquest today.  A couple of mistakes in a wide position, followed by two deflections, which confused Craig Gordon, and that’s all it took.  I’m OK with this.  We’ll make mistakes and lose goals, this is one of the better ways of doing so.

Of slightly more concern was how St Johnstone match us for possession and chances created or long period during the game, belying their bottom half of the table position, some 7 points shy of Hamilton.  Ronny will be keen to turnaround this specific ill for next week’s game against Accies, but the plan for Thursday will be altogether different.

Had a great time on Friday at the Irvine CSC, a very impressive club in the Ayrshire town.  Get along and support it if you are in the area, they are doing a lot of good work.  There’s no better way to prepare for a game against Inter Milan than to listen to Stevie Chalmers and Bobby Lennox telling you how it’s done, as they did at Irvine.

Thanks in particular to the man who put a bunch of tenners in my hand for Mary’s Meals.  What a club!

Big week ahead……

Why oh why are sky and Bt subscribers paying circa £100million each to teams like Villa and Leicester??! The English product is completely flawed. Unfortunately there are too many mugs….

    ————

I assume Sky make a fortune from advertising and subscriptions, they are a business. If something costs them £5billion then pretty sure they are making that and more.

  3. And I know killjoy but the state of the pitches shouldn’t be glossed over with glib comments, something needs to be done about the playing surfaces in Scotland. It’s an easy to fix and not a major cost over the long term.

  4. Some great posts on CQN this morning.

Loved watching Bobby Murdoch in the 60’s, he really was the beating heart of the team and controlled the tempo of the side. On a recent holiday when speaking to a ‘boro fan, when he found out my team he just wanted to talk about how great a player Bobby was for them.

No longer watch live TV but was disgusted when told Gary Lineker gets more annually from the BBC than Scottish Football.

Finally did not know Scot Gov had stopped ‘safe standing’ thought it was Glasgow Council, is this true?

Most of Epl/Fa cup games are dross, but Sky just tell you they are good, just a wee fiver on Villa with both teams scoring, Ladbrokes had enhanced it to 5/1…

  7. Yogiy, don’t blame me,I voted Yes.

Council said it’s with the Gov, the Gov said it’s with the Council, so make of that what you well but appears to be your typical Gov influence and stalling without making a decision

I thought Celtic played better than our season’s average yesterday. I don’t think Deila necessarily demands lots of possession – it looks more about what his players do when the ball is intercepted.

We are great at closing teams down (see the undroppable Johansen) but not so good at retaining possession (see the undroppable Johansen). The question on Thursday is what happens when we come up against a technically assured side who are comfortable on the ball. Will they be so easily intimidated? Of course not.

The other key point is that teams who play in Ronny’s style leave spaces at the back, especially down the wings. One decent diagonal ball is all it takes…

Not sure the plan for Thursday will be that different, if our other European games are anything to go by.

  9. Yogiy – no it’s not. GCC tried to pass the buck to the Govt. Govt said it’s an issue for councils to deal with. The ball is in GCCs court.

Former Rangers manager Ally McCoist is looking to return to management in England and was considered for the post at Aston Villa before Tim Sherwood was appointed.

McCoist, 52, has decided to make himself available for other jobs even though he is guaranteed being paid by Rangers until the end of the year.

  11. Regarding the question of standing at football, it would be interesting to know if House has had any say in the matter. He appears to be opposed to most things on a whim. I think that Police Scotland, in particular, House has plenty to say on issues that should be decided by government local or national.

  12. Before the game Tommy Wright mentioned the 3-3 match from last season after the league was won when Celtic went to sleep in the last few minutes and St Johnstone scored twice. This game gave them hope yesterday.

Sometimes when substitutions are made the players on the pitch think the game is over. (My wife said that Ronny was changing the team too early.)Some of them may have been feeling a little tired after this long series of away matches.

Anyway it had Radio Shortbread quite hopeful and even Pat Bonner was joining in saying that he hoped that the Saints would get another chance. My crossed fingers won through!

St Johnstone are a very good home team with wins over ICT, Dundee United and an unlucky draw with Aberdeen.

  13. Paul, I HOPE thursday’s game plan is entirely different. But I suspect it may not be.

My son mentioned the other day, that an Italian team is the worst we could have drawn, given our current tactical approach. We will press, they will sit in, 2 quick passes and……

As for yesterday, I believe that St Johnstone deserve credit. They pressed us in a way we have not been used to. Their fitness levels were good, and they made a fair game of it.

When I hear those Welsh Rugby fans and their players sing their national anthem, my heart near bursts with pride for them and they’re the enemy today :-))

  15. Inter winning 2 – 1 at half time.

A perfect cameo. Over elaborate up front ./ very good midfield and very iffy and prone to panic when put under pressure. Ranocchia is an interesting case – he used to look worthy of the Maldini / Nesta comparisons but now looks very nervy .

  18. Great support up at Perth yesterday, good to see a club open all doors to fill the stadium as much as possible. Take note Partick , Killie etc.

Only gig McMoist will get is Killie imho.

Sadies Bhoy, re the anthems I agree the Welsh one is very passionately done.. I am not opening a political debate but hearing the Edinburgh bankers and Borders farmers then singing Flower of Scotland is a bit hollow.

    bit harsh on killie

they give us many more tickets than we virtually ever sell apart from league winning games

i’ve got no real issue with these other teams not giving us more tickets, it’s their club and their finances. as long as they give us a sensible amount and not just a couple of hundred for example then whatever else they do is up to them

seems a strange financial model all the same when theres people willing to buy the tickets. i can understand if its a vital game for them e.g. a win saves them from the drop or gets them into europe that they dont want a ground full of celtic fans but if its a run of the mill league game then it’s strange to knock back the green pound (well, apart from it not being legal tender anymore!)

  21. £100 million for teams in EPL

Lot of money for parking a bus

For Thursday we need the spirit of the tunnel 67

  22. Jesus how slow are some Rugby players that guy gave up even before the guy was close to being clear

  23. I watch a lot of EPL football on SKY and like to view various other sports too. I get it via Virgin Media which includes BT Sports. I also subscribe to Premier Sports which covers the Aussie A-League and NRL.

In midweek I normally view the football on my laptop which leaves the TV to my good lady, unless it is a Celtic game when we both watch on the big screen, often accompanied by one of both our sons.

I am more than happy to pay for that out of my hard-earned income, so won’t be unsubscribing any time soon.

    In an ideal world . . .

Flower of Scotland is a dirge as is GSTQ. The other 6 Nations anthems are very inspirational. I would like something like Runrig’s version of Loch Lomond with appropriate words for the nation.

The more people going through the gates the better , our football needs bums on seats, if the majority are Celtic bums so be it, killie only give us 1 end , but they are 1 club I don’t want to benefit from the Celtic pound, they would prefer the sevco £££’s

meant to say in my post this morning thank you for your hospitality above and beyond imo but much appreciated, the food certainly enabled me to consume many more pints of guinness than I thought possible (for me)

  27. FOS is a poor national anthem the words are basically fighting for your wee bit and glen, and fighting an English king. It’s hardly bigging up your own nation, it’s singing about being small and downtrodden. Anthems need to be uplifting either by tune or words.

  28. Celtic should sign St Johnstone player Michael Ohalloran .good player and gets his share of goals to.
