Ferencvaros hit Europa league highs last season

306

It is positive news that we will not face the mid-season Swedish champions next week.  Djurgardens are nowhere near as strong as Celtic, but they will be significantly fitter and by some way better than any team we have faced since Copenhagen in February.

At full strength, Ferencvaros are almost certainly a better team than Djurgardens, and they won through last night with the advantage of home soil, despite being only one game into their domestic campaign.

Unlike last season, their European record read like a history of Hungarian football over the last four decades.  The four previous years brought only one aggregate win in European qualification, against Latvian opposition, with defeats to teams from Israel, Denmark, Albania, Bosnia and Netherlands.

That all changed in season 2019-20, when they eliminated Bulgarian, Maltese and Lithuanian opponents to reach the Europa League group stage.  There, they drew home and away with Espanyol, beat CSKA in Moscow and took a point at home.  Their campaign ended there, as despite having beat Bulgarians Ludogorets Razgrad home and away in a Champions League qualifying round, they lost their Europa League home game, could only draw away, and finished third in the table.

Ferencvaros record last season is enough to give Neil Lennon plenty to think about, but playing at Celtic Park against opponents no fitter than we are, is what we would have hoped for at this stage.

  1. Can’t hope for more than a home draw. If the Swedes had won most likely we would have had to play them at a neutral venue.

  2. Tougher game than this week but that’s the way the cookie crumbles. Watched a bit yesterday – some pace, hit on the break merchants and defending was from long balls in. Start like we dis this week, crisp and fast and we should win by 2-0.

No mugs though…..home venue a positive.

Would rather have played the weaker team especially with Tuesday and Dundee Utd games under our belt but home advantage is huge.

Then if Djurgarden had won last night we might be saying ah they’re clearly stronger I’d rather be playing Ferencvaros :)

Over analysing. Lets just rattle a few goals past them when they turn up next week.

Yes, I’d expect your first guess to be right too.

  6. I watched the highlights. Ferencevaros looked a dangerous team who counter attack at pace. This formula has been successful in the past against us. We need the pace of Ajer in the defence as they seem to specialise in fast counter attacak.

last night, the first goal was a 30 yard shot after the midfield dispossessed the Swedish player and moved the ball quickly to Tolman who confidently hit it from 30 yards.

The second goal was a quick ball from their half to Tolman who split the defenders and ran through to the goalie all the way from the half way line.

I would suspect that they will adopt same tactics against Celtic. They will sit in and play long ball forward behind the defenders and the fast forwards will try to hit us on the break. I reckon there will 4 5 1 with 10 men behind the ball and then breaking quickly to support the fast striker

Their defence looked strong and blocked a lot of shots and the goalie was lightning quick in restarting play.

What happened to one game at a time – let’s show DU some respect before discussing next week.

  8. Watched the highlights, they look quick and move the ball quickly on the break however on the flip side the Swedes were rotten. First goal was dreadful with numerous mistakes and I thought the goalie should have got to it.

So overall we’ll need to be careful and not give the ball away in our own half, be patient and focus on keeping possession, remember its a one off match so if we score first I would predict a straightforward victory. Based upon both goals definitely not a game to rest Broonie.

No disrespect to the Hungarians but , put our strongest team out and if we don’t go through it will be our own fault.

You are right Big Wavy, that Team are no mugs.

I’ve just watched, the No Bobby Does It Petta Link, & they are Dangerous on the Attack.

    Their Tactical Formation, is 4 – 2 – 1 – 3 which is unusal from the norm.

So we will need to be professional, & clinical, in our approach & play, in this match.

No room for being complacent @ the back, or being sloppy in our play.

With Home Advantage, we should digress into the next round, however, we can not

take this for granted, & will have to be on our efficency game, from the word Go, until

the End. These CL’s Quallifiers are never easy/a give me, there are always potential

Banana skins, around the corner, that is for sure.

Anyway, good luck to the Bhoys, for next Wednesday’s Match.

Well pleased with Tuesday’s win, I hope next week’s game is scheduled for Tuesday again. Tannadice first and only.

When your team’s level with ten minutes to play, Tom Rogic has been a good man to have on the pitch for us. There will be more than a few such times to come this season, hard to believe the manager doesn’t want him around the camp.

Not logged in to VST yet but I’ve seen Eddy’s goal. Eight touches I counted, the chop back 5,6, push it through with right 7, drill home left 8. Great stuff and a lifetime regret we weren’t there.

Thanks Bobby Does It Petta, for the Link, & the useful info.

  15. Next weeks European game is Wednesday, we need the extra day after Tannadice.

They are no mugs but we used to fancy ourselves against the likes of Bayern & Inter so we need to rebuild that Fortress Parkhead spirit, Wednesday is as good a day as any to put down a marker,

Jamesgang absolutely brilliant response about An Tearmann on last thread, I roared with laughter.

    ;)

    No problemo Sir!

My first observation of the phenomena up close was at Glasgow Airport of all places.

The London CSC I was involved in happened to be returning from a do, we had at Celtic Park – ( a dinner for our outgoing President following a game) As luck would have it we encountered a group of thums by the bar ( they had a European fixture and a dozen of thum had congregated before their flight oooot)

Our Bhoys were mostly senior chaps who’d been-there-seen-it-done -it types and all cool as crushed ice……

Anyhoo, we were discretely attired with just the odd scarf or polo tap suggestive of our allegiance- thems were done up like an Orange Walk had fallen downstairs in their klub shop.

Their heid bummer was not a tall man, but fat – as wide as he was tall…almost spherical. As it was a foreign trip and he was going on a plane – he’s chosen his best ” dress” trackie – to partner the full kit ensemble – a veritable riot in blue he was.

At the time we had 3 Pats in our Club, Huge Pat, Big Pat and Wee Pat…( sadly two of those are no longer with us) anyhoo, Big Pat nodded a conciliatory and amiable greeting to the nylon-klad, rotund homunculus……who approached with some caution. Clearly the combination of his considerable weight matched with the tight nylon, made sudden movement difficult if not a real fire-hazard.

    Anyhoo…….

It was at this moment precisely I first observed the currant respiratory phenomenon. Yer man was incapable of conversation, instead sort of slumped back on his haunches surveying Big Pat with his good eye and breathed in and ooot, via a tiny wee mooth…..it was like the noise made from a faulty hydraulics on an old digger………Unforgettable.

    Nice chattin’

I watched the highlights. Ferencevaros looked a dangerous team who counter attack at pace. ________

From highlights only, they looked quick up front. It’s not as if we need to chase the game and away goals don’t count double, so we shouldn’t be too over-exposed if they are a counter attacking team. I think the keeper got caught out for the first goal, as the boy took it early. Looked a nice stadium. Let’s just win a home game, that’s all (I hope) we need to do. Might be some fans in the stadium for the third round, if we do.

  18. Fieldofdrams, Apparently that is the plan but no figures yet on numbers allowed in.

Unfortunately we had limited attendances here in Ireland for a while but a recent spike has seen the decision reversed & we are back now to totally closed grounds, it’s absolute shite.

It means if I drive one of my grandchildren to an underage game, I must sit in my car until game is over.

You can’t even stand around on an open windswept pitch with 20 or 30 other parents/ grandparents & watch the weans play.

We had the heated ball during the draw which meant we came out first.😉

Because we are the Seaded Club.

Hopefull with no slip up’s, we should be seaded, right through to the two

it’s down to the luck of the draw/tie.
