Ferencvaros hit Europa league highs last season

306

It is positive news that we will not face the mid-season Swedish champions next week.  Djurgardens are nowhere near as strong as Celtic, but they will be significantly fitter and by some way better than any team we have faced since Copenhagen in February.

At full strength, Ferencvaros are almost certainly a better team than Djurgardens, and they won through last night with the advantage of home soil, despite being only one game into their domestic campaign.

Unlike last season, their European record read like a history of Hungarian football over the last four decades.  The four previous years brought only one aggregate win in European qualification, against Latvian opposition, with defeats to teams from Israel, Denmark, Albania, Bosnia and Netherlands.

That all changed in season 2019-20, when they eliminated Bulgarian, Maltese and Lithuanian opponents to reach the Europa League group stage.  There, they drew home and away with Espanyol, beat CSKA in Moscow and took a point at home.  Their campaign ended there, as despite having beat Bulgarians Ludogorets Razgrad home and away in a Champions League qualifying round, they lost their Europa League home game, could only draw away, and finished third in the table.

Ferencvaros record last season is enough to give Neil Lennon plenty to think about, but playing at Celtic Park against opponents no fitter than we are, is what we would have hoped for at this stage.

  1. SONSOFERIN:-Good luck to the Bhoy’s/Our Club, in reaching the CL Group Stages

This Season, after all the last time we where in the CL Group Stages, was

Season 2016/17. Which was four years ago.

  2. I haven’t heard the KT interview with BBC Scotland however a single piece of graffiti on a wall near his family home ( if that is where it appeared ) doesn’t represent the feelings of any Celtic supporter I know.

Disappointed that a real talent, with a fervour for the club, has left to test himself on an undeniably bigger stage. We can all subscribe to that but that is a million miles from an act of betrayal.

Some people need a reality check.

Of course the story is mana from heaven to a sports journalist. The scribe will know that the Judas sentiment is not how most Celtic fans feel about Kieran but being able to report that KT was upset is a scoop.

Why is he upset——- because he actually cares.

  3. You can draw parallels beteween the treatment of martin o’neil and brendan rodgers by the people who run our club.

The club was in a mess in 2000. They brought in Martin to turn things around and he quickly did so. 50000 season tickets sold and a waiting list and a waiting list to get on the waiting list. The treble in his first season and denied by a loss to rangers in the cup final to deny him a treble in his second season. Great nights in the champions league. Things started to turn sour between the board and the “blessed martin.”

Then they started thinking if they really needed Martin. the stadium was full every game. Martin said in an interview that he could have left after 3 years. Spurs wanted him but he didn’t want to leave on a downer with rangers winning the treble and the defeat to Porto.

Fast forward to the ronny deila years. We finished first twice in a 1 horse race. Playing in front of a half empty stadium. Brendan is brought in to turn things around and he does so quickly. 50000 season tickets sold. A treble in his first season and going one better than Martin by winning the treble in his second season. Things start to turn sour between Brendan and the people who run our club. Dembele sold as the window closes.

signing free transfers and signing players he didn’t want. he is sold to Leicester for £9m and replaced by Neil Lennon, an unemployed manager.

Peter lawwell must have been celebrating in the boardroom. he thinks its a great bit of business.

    Celtic supporters blame Brendan.

    Rat face. snake eyes.

The more things change the more they stay the same.

Billy McNeil was told by Desmond whyte if he can get more money at Manchester city then go. Maybe some celtic supporters back then thought that big billy was a rat face and snake eyes.

We have a history of treating our managers poorly.

  4. ROLLING STONE,

Once again history being re-written around a Celtic transfer.KT and his agent had the 25 million minimum written in to his contract. As soon as this was offered,Celtic then had to inform KT,it was then up to the player.

KT wanted to go,nothing wrong with that, with the money on offer.Great player, great Tim,but please spare me,the dross,he was forced out.

  5. GARCIA LORCA:-Although KT is plying his craft @ The London Gunners FC.

He still has our Club in his Heart, & is definitely one of us.

  6. Don’t know the details of Kieran Tierney’s transfer. In truth, it was inevitable but maybe a couple of seasons earlier than expected. KT appears a very decent young man. As for, Johnston and Rodgers, neither of their departures fell into the ‘best practice’ category. But, in the final analysis, they were entirely at liberty to do what they did.

  7. Team against the Hungarians…

    Barkas

    Big Tam Julien Ajer

    Forrest Ntcham Callum Christie

  8. WestCraigs:-We have a history of treating our managers poorly.

You are damn tooting, look @ the way we treated Jock Stein, after winning

25 honours with us, ridiculous & shocking.

I remember the gag which was going around, when the Kelly’s & Whites

pushed Caesar out of the Door.

Caesar, went home, only to find Martin Hayes sitting in his Living Room.

  9. WESTCRAIGS,

Celtic,as a club, could not continue to fund Martin’s ambition. Our finances were poor at the end of Martin’s reign.WGS was brought in to try and steady the ship, whilst downsizing the wages bill.He was successful in this,a thing sometimes overlooked by fans looking back on WGS time with us.A task compounded by the Huns still wildly overspending, cheating, tax dodging, leading to their death. If you remember Celtic funded Martin with 18 million for Lenny,Sutton,Hartson,a huge figure in 2000.Plus a lot more.Unsustainable.

    2. You think KT lied in that quote?

I would be inclined to believe KT over Pedro, but each to their own.

  11. BIG WAVY,

TurkeyBhoy, Big Wavy is on the Tonic Wine, (Bucky) I agree with you, it’s going to take time, to

get Albian Ajeti up too speed & sharpness, after all he only made some fleeting appearances

from the subs bench, when he was @ West Ham.

  14. ROLLING STONE,

Never said that KT lied,as I have no idea what statement KT made. There WAS a 25 million clause in his contract. If you remember right Arsenal came in very low,and gradually increased their offer in dribs and drabs.

Went on for a while, which would account for the conversation between Rogic and KT.He knew the figure required, not sure if Arsenal would match it.

  15. Hungarian mob = awkward tie / opponents.

However given our resources we should prevail — fairly easily.

    Looking like 2-0 / 3-1to me.

If we cannot make the CL group stages on a regular basis then we need a new strategy / new CEO / new manager.

We fail because we make it difficult for ourselves — please see the annual CB kerfuffle for all the evidence you need.

Poorly run / poorly set up / poorly prepared — at least we are consistent.

  16. We got £6m for viduka. Sutton was a swop.

    Unsustainable. Really?

How much have we lost by not qualifying for the champions league group stages?

    9 times since 2001/02.

    An estimate. 9 ×£30m = £270m.

Some supporters think we are a business and should be run on business lines.

If normal business principles apply to our club lawwell would have been fired long ago.

Failure to qualify for the champions league is a football and business failure and should be unacceptable. The ceo’s head should have rolled.

DD lost the love and it was a slippery slope from then on.

And all for a place in the EPL.

The Irish Raj is the king of arbitrage.

  19. The KT saga started in the summer of 2018 when all the agents of our “big” players were asked for RFP’s regarding sell on.

Either that or PL did a ring round of the EPL managers / CEOs / DOFs offering our big players for sale.

The plan was MD out the door for good money but the biggest offer that came back was for KT.

Cue panic / angst / confusion — plus all the KT chat which came as a surprise to just about everyone.

Not sure if BR was not willing to let KT go so all his targets got forgotten about.

MD leaves after a fall out with BR later and the rest is history.

As mentioned earlier — leave at 22 like KT and you are a LM type figure.

Leave at 27 and you are up there with KD.

If only someone had offered good money for JF at the time …

WestCraigs, the problem with our Club, is that they will not speculate too accumulate, when

it comes to Europe, they have never heard of the words “throw caution to the wind”!

Look how many times, in each Summer Transfer window, they leave it too the last knockings.

  26. I see we are still playing the “Where’s the Seville money?” game.

MON splurge was with a view to gaining entry to EPL.

Once that door was closed, it was back to living within our means or “slow lane” as MON called it.

CL Group success gets harder year after year as the rules change to suit the Big league Clubs (there are now 4 automatic group places for England) incrementally. The champions of most leagues in Europe slog it out to earn one of 4 places available from the Champions Route in CL qualification. Our ability to guarantee group stage qualification gets haarder each year but we prefer to blame a suit, or a lack of ambition(sic) – when we refer to our own expectancies as ambition.

Nobody is ever going to prove this mindset right or wrong, because no owner or major shareholder of a peripheral club in an unrated league is ever going to do a risk analysis and conclude, as the fans do, that our board are far too cautious.

Sure there is still a splurge at times. We hd one for Big Billy after we binned Davie Hay unjustly. We did it for MON as we were on a promise with that tease, the EPL.

We did it for Tony Mowbray to try and save a decent man who was failing in his job and we might do it for the 10 as well, but these splurges are nowhere near what the fans demand.

We have, in all honesty, done very well domestically under the curent model. We are the most spoiled for (domestic) success group of Celtic supporters there has ever been. So, to project failure onto our club, as some have a need to, we need to focus on our Euro positioning and assert that, if we splashed some unspecified amount of cash, we’d bridge the gap caused by these large financial disparities in unearned monies.

All round the continental leagues, we are looked upon a sa sucessful club, who regularly represents well the disadvantaged leagues across Europe. They know we are not an elite club. They know we are not even a 2nd tier club like Basel or Benfica or Ajax or Shakter or Olynpiacos. But they would credit us as being as successful as Anderlecht, Zagreb, Qarabag, Maribor etc who also serve as Pot 4 cannon fodder and fight above their weight to get the chance to be pumped rotten.

  27. Ernie Lynch, PL’s remuneration suggests they are prepared to push the boat out when it suits them.

Fair point, & true, yes, when it financially suits them.

  31. Greenwells Glory on

Hi Ghuys, Salve salve ;- KIeran ? simple truth? well it was time for him to move on, He was beginning to go backwards and I doubt if he would have fully recovered from the injury he was carrying and the prospect of him being exposed to a couple of seasons of Lenny’s “coaching” was simply too appalling to contemplate. He is now at a team with world class sports science, medical and game analysis facilities. Not to mention he has now secured enough money to secure both his and his family’s future. I harbour hope that he will yet return to us in a position to give us some years of top class service.

The behaviour and lack of grasp on reality of some Celtic supporters has long since ceased to surprise me.
