Ferencvaros rest, regret lingers

313

While Celtic were taking care of business in Dundee, Ferencvaros had the weekend off to prepare for their Champions League qualifying game in Glasgow on Wednesday.  This means the Hungarian champions have played only two competitive games since the end of June, one in the league and last week’s qualifier against Djurgardens.

Rested players are better than tired players, but I would not be happy if Celtic were going into this match having played so few games.  Neil Lennon will have learned things from Saturday’s game that will inform his plans for Ferencvaros.

French clubs have been European champions as often as Scottish clubs.  PSG have two of the most talented and expensive strikers in the world, but they both failed to take the gilt-edged chances that fell their way in Lisbon last night, so France and Scotland stay tied on one win each.

90 minutes pass quickly in knockout football but the pain of regret lingers, just think back to Cluj or Copenhagen.  I would use post-match photos of Neymar to motivate the players ahead of Wednesday.  No one wants to feel like that loser.

    Trivia

Celtic announce the signing of Dixie Deans from Motherwell for £20,000. He was signed whilst serving out a suspension and would be unable to play play until 27 November.

With Bobby Murdoch and Jimmy Johnstone both out with injuries then a slight reshuffle was in order. Back in came Vic Davidson who had been with the Reserves after being out injured near the beginning of the season. The surprise absence when the teams came out was Tommy Callaghan who had not missed a first team game so far this season.

Police were in action on the terraces throughout the game.

On the same day Celtic defeated Ayr Utd 3-1 in a Reserve Cup match at Celtic Park. The Celtic team was Marshall, McGrain, Watt, McCluskey, Gemmell, Cattanach, Hancock, White, Franchetti, Mitchell, Wilson Sub O’Hara. The Celtic scorers were Wilson 2 and Franchetti.

Really sad to read your news.

I played golf a couple of times with Pat and he was great company.

    Only 68 too.

    Rest in peace Pat McCluskey.

  8. I noticed a post earlier about Shane Duffy being on a flight from Gatwick to Dundee, and Brighton having pre season in Dundee.

Well…I don’t think Brighton are doing a pre season in Dundee, but West Ham are doing pre season in St Andrews, 10 miles from Dundee…

On the other hand there are no direct flights from Gatwick to Dundee.

So make of that what you will.

  9. BSR

I played in a medal round with him at Palacerigg (Cumbernauld). I started birdie 3 at the first, eagle 2 at the second.

I think Pat thought I was a pro , unfortunately so did I and things soon fell apart.

    But he was lovely company!

    Very sad for his family.

    RIP Pat.

The flight they were on was to Aberdeen but they parachuted out over St Andrews.

  12. So many rats, Freeman & Neil latest, leaving the rotten hulk of the SNP……and the two half a billion pound Port Glasgow rust buckets with painted windows unable to pick them.

These people know there will be no Indyref2, or, separation, in the next twenty years, if ever.

What there will be is a total collapse in the Scottish economy after UKGOV’s £100bn furlough comes to an end, & SNP haven’t a single clue what to do next.

But why so many announcing now?

Perhaps a few on here might fancy throwing their hats into the ring.

  13. I am sure it was Pat who sat with us for dinner in San Fran at the NACC.It was the last night a boat cruise around the harbour, very nice BHOY.RIP PAT

  14. Well, some more info to make of what you will regarding the second coming aka Shane Duffy to the Hoops.

So Duffy was rumoured to have flown from Gatwick to Dundee this morning. I posted earlier that West Ham, another rumoured destination for Duffy, are holding a pre season camp at St Andrews. Not far from Dundee – I motorcycled there from Dundee today, 10 minutes (honest, Constable).

Ron Bacardi posted at 8.25pm, ‘Charter flight perhaps.’

Challenge accepted, and with a couple of phone calls backed up by a wee bit of internetting, there was indeed a charter flight from Gatwick to Dundee today, Jota Aviation, aircraft designator ENZ129, an Avro AJ-85, departed London Gatwick 10.48 BST and landed in Dundee 12.15 BST.
