Ferencvaros rest, regret lingers

313

While Celtic were taking care of business in Dundee, Ferencvaros had the weekend off to prepare for their Champions League qualifying game in Glasgow on Wednesday.  This means the Hungarian champions have played only two competitive games since the end of June, one in the league and last week’s qualifier against Djurgardens.

Rested players are better than tired players, but I would not be happy if Celtic were going into this match having played so few games.  Neil Lennon will have learned things from Saturday’s game that will inform his plans for Ferencvaros.

French clubs have been European champions as often as Scottish clubs.  PSG have two of the most talented and expensive strikers in the world, but they both failed to take the gilt-edged chances that fell their way in Lisbon last night, so France and Scotland stay tied on one win each.

90 minutes pass quickly in knockout football but the pain of regret lingers, just think back to Cluj or Copenhagen.  I would use post-match photos of Neymar to motivate the players ahead of Wednesday.  No one wants to feel like that loser.

Indeed it was Sevvy who designed Westerwood Golf Course.

It subsequently fell into a state of disrepair and Sevvy told them to remove his name from all advertising.

I played it once off the championship tees, it was a monster.

I believe it is in better nick now.

  2. Palace rigg was/is a coucil owned and run golf course.

I haven’t played there for about 15 years and it was a bit neglected then.

But a decent layout and a good test when in good nick.

  3. BSR,

Any mention of Cumbernauld airport recalls the story of Jock Stein, on a speaking tour with Archie McPherson, trying to return to Glasgow one morning after an evening event in the Highlands the night before, in an attempt to take Celtic training. Cumbernauld is zonked in with fog; the pilot abandons one or two attempts to land at which point the hand of Stein raps him on the shoulder and says “Can you sign-write in the sky? Because if you can, write ‘Eff Off’ and take us to Edinburgh!”

    He missed training that morning.

  4. The aircraft that arrived in Dundee from Gatwick today departed Dundee for Southend (the aircraft operator’s home airport) at 14.14 BST, crew only, no passengers from what I’m told.

So an aircraft leaves Gatwick (sort of nearish to Brighton, what, 70 miles?) and lands in Dundee, definitely near St Andrews where West Ham are doing pre-season. Shane Duffy plays for Brighton, and might be a player of interest to West Ham.

Clearly this is rock-solid evidence that something is happening to someone, somewhere.

Now, I thought that this could be a Peter Lawwell double bluff because the landing fees at Dundee would be far cheaper than Glasgow, but no. It turns out that per tonne, Glasgow’s fees are more economical, so it turns out that I know as much as any Daily Record journo which is to say, not much.

  5. We have one player who can see a pass and make the runs that others can only dream of and there is rumours that he is for the off, it will be sad to see the Wizard of Oz go but imo Turnbul will be an adequate replacement, he is nothing like Broonie so folks can forget that one, Ryan’s place might be under threat me thinks, I have read, no idea if there is any truth in that he wants to go anyways, as for Duffy, the talk is a 2 mill loan deal plus wages or a 5 mill fee plus presumably extortionate wages, I honestly canny see Pedro paying that, that eff IMO, there are far far better out there for way way less, just my opinion, not that I would say no right enough, we need some steel at the back and he sure has it in abundance.

Spain, France and Italy are full of them and that is without scouring the Balkans.

Good news and thanks for no spelling mistakes this time!

Some very clever poster on here.

    Actually most of them!

  7. Don’t mind Hickey as a back up but we need a better first choice than Greg.

I like Greg’s effort and application but with everyone fit, he is the weakest player in our first 11. I’d also say that (excluding Boli for his misdemeanours), he is the weakest of the 3 fullbacks on our books.

With potentially two more in this week, you have to wonder who is leaving…

  8. Go tell the Spartim on

Westerwood suffered from bad drainage from the start as Philbhoy said wasn’t kept as it should even after addressing the initial issues. Was decent a couple of years back don’t know now.

As for Pally it’s still decent to play for a council course

  9. TET

We are also linked with a CB from PSG who sounds the real deal.

Seaso long loan, but we only need to win it one more time to completely sicken the mankies and the establishment.

    What could be better?

The blog has been hilarious today, thank you for that.

Apart from 2 posters worried about Wednesday.

    Hope you are good!

    Take care D!

  11. Go tell the Spartim on

Get french football news links us to all sorts of players you’d hope we had a presence there as there some great players.

Hickey I’d take only so the BBC had to write that we saw off the Champions of Europe to sign him they’d be pig sick

  12. THE EXILED TIM

Did you ever see the miss on open goal by the reserve PSG forward in a league game who came on last night? Not sure if I’d take that one.

  13. GO TELL THE SPARTIM

When I took up golf I joined Calderbraes Golf Club, next to Calderpark Zoo. My annual sub was £60.

However, most of my mates played at Palacerigg so I joined there.

Wee used to play early on a Sunday morning, sixish, and called it “The Dawn Patrol”.

Many happy memories of the place!

A good length and layout too.

  14. Westerwood spent a fortune on drainage about 10 years ago, and redesigned a couple of holes, particularly the 13 or 14th, where you could hook it left and pan a few windaes in on the Dullater estate.

  15. TET

    You are correct sir!

    He is a fullback.

I’d take him in a minute too!

  16. Go tell the Spartim on

    Philbhoy

Grew up playing Palacerigg up at 6 to get on before it opened 👍🏾 Coincidentally I was a member of Calderbraes bout 14 yeas ago, bit of a hilly 9 hole course hated the 4th or 5th the one with the uphill tee 😩

  17. !!BADA BING!!

    I remember that!

You were not allowed to hit a wood off the tee at those holes.

I also remember a cat that stole yer baws off the fairway!

    Sevvy would be proud!!

  18. GO TELL THE SPARTIM

The 4th was a beast, all uphill to a shared green (with the 1st) if my memory serves me.

    Good memories though!

  19. Funny seeing the Palacerigg and Westerwood posts. My home town course back in the day. Used to collect balls and sell them to get our cash for the round.

Dullatur had two 18 hole course when I left.

Not often you get to say Cumbernauld and blessed in the same breath but it was blessed with a few decent rounds.

  20. I lived by Westerwood when the course was being designed. Seve came in for a morning to walk the course and help with the layout etc. We were allowed to wander alongside and watch what was going on. The mud was well over the ankles throughout the place. It may have been a quarry at some point and there was definitely no grass anywhere. I remember Seve pacing out a par 3. He asked for a club and put a ball down in the mud, then proceeded to hit the ball as clean as you like maybe 170 yds or so, and said that’s where the green’s going. Then they walked down and paced out the green. For me, there was just no concept of what a course might look like in the mud. I did play it a few times in it’s first couple years and it was a great course. Palacerigg was a good public course which we used to bike to when I was younger usually after the paper round. Can’t remember too much about it.

  21. AIPPLE

    Dullatur 2 good tests,

Henrik stayed in Dullatur for a while at least when he was with us.

Did you mention Budhill Avenue the other day?

  22. MNCELT

I lived by Westerwood as it was being built as well, down the road in Balloch.

Had a student membership at Westerwood, would use the sauna, pool room etc. was mismanaged as my student card never expired!

  23. MNCELT

I remember when Westerwood was just about complete.

Sevvy was filmed hitting an iron at one of the par 3’s.

    He hit the flagstick!

    I loved that guy!

  24. Greek authorities have set the bail on Harry McGuire at £5000.

Man United have offered £3000 plus Phil Jones and Jessie Lingard.

  25. Regrettably my golfing days are behind me!

    Just like late nights!

Great day on the Blog and thanks to all!

    Nite nite!

  26. See the boy Hickey that a few on here have rubbished

Watched a wee video on youtube there(i know)

    BUT

what stood out for me in clips he looks as confident on right as left foot.

Maybe he is right footed but I would say hard to tell from that video
