Ferencvaros, the best since Honved and Videoton

311

I am old enough to remember Videoton winning at the Bernabeu and clubs like Ujpest, Ferencvaros and Honved mentioned in respectful tones, but Hungarian football did not troubled anyone for 35 years.  Ferencvaros then got the colours all lined up on their Rubix Cube last season and, as a consequence, present a more considered challenge that we would expect any other season.

The existential problem when facing four qualification rounds against comparative minnows, is that while you will be better than most, or even all, the law of averages suggest that one of them will get everything right on and off the field.  Due to their status in the game, this will be impossible to maintain, but on their day a Videoton can beat Real in Madrid.

This Ferencvaros may be the best team to come out of Hungary in 35 years, but their challenge is now the difficult second album.  The stars aligned last season but the sky is ever-changing and while they may remain a good side, it will be near-impossible for them to perform to as they did last season, by merely drawing in Barcelona, as they did last year against Espanyol.

  1. CELTIC: Barkas; Jullien, Taylor, Brown, Christie, Ntcham, Elyounoussi, Ajer, McGregor, Elhamed, Forrest

Subs: Bain, Bitton, Ajeti, Klimala, Soro, Frimpong, Harper

  2. No Bobby Does It Petta on

I read about Eddy’s omission on Hun media today at 3pm.

Obvs still a leak at CP.

  3. We’ve got at least 4 strikers on the books and can’t start any. Hope for Neil’s sake we go through.

  4. will the mole please stand up , looks like we still have a big issue with someone, needs to be addressed.

  5. Soro & Harper make bench.

Is Rogic still in the house, maybe not match fit.

Well it’s Offishul so those who want to panic have the floor.

I’m not panicking but I would have preferred to see Klimala or Ajeti leading the line.

Shades of CalMac at left back but not quite as bad.

All I can say is, if it’s not working change it early, don’t leave it till 70th minute.

  6. ok ghuys im amending my scoreline from earlier, i said all day long i was thinking of the league cup final score in 57, dont know why, you older ghuys like me will remember the seven past niven comment, i love that😍anyway with christie now up front, im going for 3-1 instead of 7-1 ,H.H,

  7. this is a little bit scandalous from celtic – we never speculate to accumulate. Poor planning and execution of getting the players in that we clearly need.

We will get the players but too little too late for champs league.

I’m disappointed he didn’t start Klimala – it would the shape of the team who found their groove against united. Now, we lost Christies energy and creativity from midfield.

Lennon is fidgeting and I no likey!

Good luck and hail hail !

  8. Delaneys Dunky on

What a slap in the face to Patryk Klimala. This will dent the Polish Bhoy’s confidence. Either Neil Lennon has lost the plot or a tactical genius. Pray it’s the latter.

  9. Exactly the team that I would have picked with the exception of Eddy for Olly.

This is safety-first by Lenny knowing that one goal could win the game at any time. I would worry if we go behind and have to ‘chase the game’. All pre-planning on the training ground may then ‘go out the window’ if we throw on Ajeti & Klimala – the shape can go and it’s ‘all hands to the pumps’.

So first goal, in my opinion, is vital.

With regard to Eddy – didn’t Lenny say just the other day that domestic matters are more important than CL this season?

  10. It is an August ritual to go with the Auld Reekie festival + Tatoo / grouse harvesting / schools going back / wasps going tonto …

Going into an important CL game with a patched up team / no CF / gaps in the defence / off form players everywhere.

You would think we are trying to fail.

We have the talent to win this comfortably.

Unfortunately we cannot prepare ourselves for toffee.

    Interesting night ahead.

  11. There’s no good reason that I can see not to start with Klimala who I’d expect to be match fit.

  12. Delaneys Dunky on

You gonnae answer my questions British Unionist troll?

    Cat got your tongue?

  13. My hope this morning was that we would play 3-5-2. On learning that Edouard was unfit I realise that it’d have to be 4-2-3-1. My only disappointment in the starting 11 is that none of our other strikers (Griffiths, Klimala, Ajeti) are up top. So whilst I don’t think our team is ‘shocking’ or a disgrace I do think I’d have been more confident had Klimala been starting. I do remain confident, of course.

  14. Unbelievable team.

Shades of playing CalMac at left back to get ‘ll our best players of the field’.

Klimala, notwithstanding his quality (like many recent signings he isn’t getting a chance to show it one way or the other) is a failed signing. He cost £3m, has been here 6 months but Neil would prefer to play without a striker?

Sevco started Kamberi away to Braga (after being at the Klub for 2 weeks) but Paddy doesn’t merit a start?

Basically no options off the bench either as no wingers or fit/fancied strikers.

    Unbelievable

  15. I’ll reserve judgment until full time, but on the face of it that team selection is the most incomprehensible I’ve seen in many a year.

  16. lets all do the huddle on

after the initial shock at that team, im going to concentrate on shouting us to a win hopefully

its very rare that a manager takes such a risk when the consequences for him of that risk failing are very clear – at least they should be

so just get stuck in and may the risk pay off handsomely

  17. Maybe it will be Elyounoussi upfront rather than Christie.

Neither are strikers but at least Christie offers something in midfield.

    Formation?? 3511, 4411 can’t see it being 433

  18. what is it they say about people who continue to make the same mistakes over and over again, expecting different results! we played tiny Mikey alone up front against rangers and couldn’t get up the pitch.

hoping the formation is different against this team.

  19. How often do Celtic play with no striker, big gamble.

I think there must be a few folk on here who know the source of the leaked teams. I’ve been getting early team news for years.

  20. Could not wait on alarm.

A one esteemed poster would say

    “No more sleeps”

    Doors to automatic

    Thanks and Hail Hail Jobo
