FERGUS McCANN, the former Celtic chief executive, has been awarded a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to the economy and charity.

The 84-year-old businessman and philanthropist, affectionately known as ‘The Bunnet’, led the 1994 takeover of the financially-stricken giants to revamp the club on and off the field.

McCann was hailed as a saviour by the fans for coming to the rescue of the club during dire times 31 years ago.

SILVERWARE CELTS…Fergus McCann and Tommy Burns with the Scottish Cup in 1995.

Brought up in Kilsyth before emigrating to Canada, he built a successful golf holiday business before taking over at Parkhead.

The team won just three trophies during McCann’s five years at the helm, but he redeveloped the stadium and modernised the club before selling his shares at his projected profit before returning to live in North America.

His Honours nod comes from the extensive work he has done for charity.

On the field, Tommy Burns ended six years without silverware when he guided the team to a 1-0 Scottish Cup Final victory over Airdrie in 1995 and his successor, Wim Jansen, added the team’s first title in a decade and the League Cup during his one-year stint in season 1997/98.
