FFP hits the mark, Atletico-Hearts of 86

2160

It remains a possibility that Atletico Madrid will lose today’s league decider against Barcelona and next week’s Champions League final against Real Madrid (vernacular: ‘do a Hearts), but I hope not.  The fact that they have pushed the two most celebrated football clubs on the planet to the limit, across two tournaments, is already remarkable.  Should they deliver on two fronts, it will be the most stunning achievement in European football in 47 years.

There was a healthy amount of bloodlust for the Uefa Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules to fine the life out of the likes of Manchester City and Paris St Germain, before banning them from Uefa competition.  This was never the point.

What Uefa have done is bring Europe’s two most freely spending clubs into line.  FFP will restrict City and PSG’s expenditure, transfer market activity and squad selection.  This is a result.

It’s a pity we’re not at Celtic Park to lift the Scottish Cup today.  *!*!

Enormous thanks to Tommy Gemmell and everyone who participated in the entertainment here yesterday.  Tommy thoroughly enjoyed the banter and will be back on the blog below this article early this afternoon to catch up with the questions he didn’t have time for yesterday.

    From Celtic wiki

This game was arranged to assist Celtic before playing Zagreb’s fellow Yugoslav’s Vojvodina in the European Cup quarter finals in a few weeks time.

    Review

Jock Stein fielded the most experimental side he had ever picked in this friendly game.

He sent out his team in a 3-4-3 formation with 3 centre backs – Cattenach, McNeill and Clark and had Gemmell and Hughes as wide midfielders with three fast runners up front in Chalmers, Wallace and Lennox. Murdoch and Auld were central midfielders.

Some players wore unusual numbers – McNeill 3, Hughes 5, Murdoch 6, Auld 7, Gemmell 8 and Wallace 10.

Despite the experiment Celtic played well and had Chalmers and Lennox not missed sitters then they would have won.

The coach taking us to Estadio Nacional in 1967 actually got lost.

We got there with about half-an-hour to spare.

We reckoned they wouldn’t start without us.

It was a lot easier in 2004.

I didn`t think Bayern Munichs result in 1967 was that stunning.

  13. Mr Gemmell,

Thanks for taking the time to read and reply to all the questions.

Do you think Celtic are going places under the present managment team and can we go further in Europe with the recent fair play sanctions adopted by Uefa no taking effect?

The form book says Dundee United and they can play some good football when they get into their stride.

But every side needs a goalscorer and St Johnstone have got one in Stevie May.

It’s a very tight call and I think one goal will settle it. I think I’ll sit on the fence, though, as I still have some very good friends in Dundee and Perth who will be at Hampden today.

I just hope it’s a good game for the fans to enjoy.

    May the better team win.

No, I didn’t have a flutter yesterday. if I has put money on that horse it would still be running!

It was after your time I know but – as Mr Haller and the Racing guy would surely agree – you weren’t one to be messed about.

  20. Off topic, and apologies for the gratuitous plug from an only occasional poster:

These mental guys from West Linton in the Borders have just set off on their way after an early lunch stop outside Buckingham Palace. They have cycled there from Edinburgh, which they left on Tuesday morning.

They will now proceed to Cardiff, Dublin, Belfast, and back to Edinburgh, where they will arrive next Saturday having cycled an incredible 1,100 miles in 12 days to raise funds for the Cystinosis Foundation UK.

Find out all about their challenge and their reasons for doing it on their website, and by linking to their FB and TW pages via the “Social Club” button at bottom right of the home page.

You can track their progress live here, to see exactly where they are at any time.

They are trying to raise £100,000 for this great cause and are just over half way there, but they would of course appreciate any and all contributions, however small. These can be made via their JustGiving fund-raising page.

Thanks to anyone who is able and moved to support their gargantuan effort, and don’t forget to share this with your friends and family, especially overseas… let’s go GLOBAL with this and help them achieve their target!

It wasn’t a Russian team it was Dinamo Zagreb from Yugoslavia. Yes, Jock changed things around that night, but it didn’t work and he never tried it again. We lost 1-0 and, to be brutally honest, we were awful!
