FFP hits the mark, Atletico-Hearts of 86

2160

It remains a possibility that Atletico Madrid will lose today’s league decider against Barcelona and next week’s Champions League final against Real Madrid (vernacular: ‘do a Hearts), but I hope not.  The fact that they have pushed the two most celebrated football clubs on the planet to the limit, across two tournaments, is already remarkable.  Should they deliver on two fronts, it will be the most stunning achievement in European football in 47 years.

There was a healthy amount of bloodlust for the Uefa Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules to fine the life out of the likes of Manchester City and Paris St Germain, before banning them from Uefa competition.  This was never the point.

What Uefa have done is bring Europe’s two most freely spending clubs into line.  FFP will restrict City and PSG’s expenditure, transfer market activity and squad selection.  This is a result.

It’s a pity we’re not at Celtic Park to lift the Scottish Cup today.  *!*!

Enormous thanks to Tommy Gemmell and everyone who participated in the entertainment here yesterday.  Tommy thoroughly enjoyed the banter and will be back on the blog below this article early this afternoon to catch up with the questions he didn’t have time for yesterday.

Double whammy of flu and chest infection today. Could be worse days to be stuck in the house. Telly in the corner and tranny on my lap….I’ll leave the punchline hanging!

Great to read all the tommy comments. Met him at the bottom of the steps after the seville game. Raised my spirits just a touch.

I agree with your post earlier about today, I’ve had enough of how good it is to share around the trophies.

Seriously Celtic, cut out the training ground/ dressing room nonsense next season and bring a professionally won Treble to Paradise.

It’s our best weapon to hurt them with, in my opinion.

BIG TAM if you are still there.

GEORGE MCCLUSKEY always says he tried that deflected shot in the cup final.

ok honest truth “IN LISBON did you try that shot or did you sklaff it.”

ps .did you ever have a wasps nest and are you related to THE BARD O’WISHY WASHY.

Geordie Munro. Could be a good player for us he is only 22 and has scored lots of goals for every club he has played for and he wouldnt break the bank either. H.H.

Sad Celtic are not involved today but overall I think this might be an excellent final.

    Hard to pick a winner.

Have no issue with whoever wins.

Obviously it would be great for the former Celts if they did it and we need to thank them for putting out Sevco or today would have been hellish but St Johnstone have never won a trophy so it would be good for them as well.

More excited about this than seeing Arsenal finally win something later on.

  11. Tommy has been on here for two days answering questions politely and courteously. In all those answers i don’t think i heard a single word of bitterness or hatred about opponents or their fans. A true gent.

  12. Mr. Gemmell….Thank you for this….The day Rangers were diagnosed with a terminal illness called ENVY….

Tommy Gemmell shoots and scores for Celtic, the crowds cheer. Various shots of match. Chalmers deflects Murdoch’s shot past Sarti to score …

Agree with your earlier post on today’s match. On the F.A. cup final I suppose Arsenal winning will keep their “fans” upbeat for another 6 or 7 years.

  14. Tommy, Unfortunately I’m not old enough to have seen you play, but I hope that you and the other lions realise how much you mean to all Celtic fans. HH

    Likewise.

It’s one of those games where I’d like to see both of them get beat!

But more than anything I NEVER want to see the Big Cup adorning Atletico Madrid’s trophy room.

We lost to the sheepshaggers in the cup due to our poor managers team selection of two midfielders who were overrun by their four

Is The MAYan’s prediction is about to come true?

Stevie May, no 17 on the 17th of May for 1st goal in the 17th minute and St. Johnstone to win 1-0?

  24. Tommy ,

If you were still playing football today, say for Dundee United like ye ken,do you think that Jackie would forgive you for booting a Kraut up the erse ….and give you a start against St.Johnstone in a National Cup Final?

Assuming the Kraut you booted up the erse was sumdy like Jorge Albertz or Stefan Klos.

Have I started on this cider too early?

  25. ryecatcher

I met Jorg Albertz many times when he played for THEM. He lived in Helensburgh and I had occasion to meet him from time to time.

He was then a really nice guy in my opinion and once said to me that he was a Rangers player but not a Rangers supporter. Make of that what you will.

  26. Have just put on what`s called a `patent` at Bet 365. StJ to win (outright), Barca/AM draw and The Arsenal. Forty nine smackeroonies given away, but over two hundred and fifty of them coming back. What are yeez all drinkin?
