FFP, Uefa moving and competing against death wish clubs

323

The Times today report that Uefa will shortly announce Financial Fair Play (FFP) sanctions against Paris St-Germain, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Roma and Juventus.  Newco’s remarkable Europa League run, and subsequent player sales, will provide a stay of execution.  They could even announce the first operational profit in their history when accounts are published.

With football on the ropes for two years, Uefa loosened FFP regulations and announced the system would be reviewed.  Going forward, clubs will be limited in what proportion of turnover they can spend on football operations, which is a decent proxy for a sustainable business model.

Taking on PSG, Barcelona, Inter, Roma and Juventus would be a huge stake in the ground for Uefa and a win for fans of well-run clubs, who want to see the end of debt-fuelled speculative gambling in the game.  Celtic fans know more than most what it is like competing with a death wish club, intent on driving off the cliff edge, if it wins football games.  For us, it was divisive, as some wanted Celtic to compete in the spending stakes; it also cost us trophies and access to European competition.

Newco show no signs of having learned lessons from the demise of Oldco Rangers.  Although Celtic were a shambles in season 2020-21, it took cumulative losses approaching £100m to stop our title run.  Strong financial regulation is on the side of the good guys.

I expect we will touch on this again before the week is out.

Aye! That may very well be true but is that Human years or Lizard People years?

A lot of Lizard’s 🦎 lurk on here.

Maybe one of them will post in a wee while.

Probably preceded by one of those robot police dogs from outside the Jock Stein stand.

You would think anything reckless would lead to a red card.

But under Law 12 (of the game) that is not the case.

“Serious foul play” (various types of which are listed) does merit a red card, after which, if you play in blue, you appeal, and get it reduced to a yeller.

  9. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    Long, busy day.

Didn’t get to read back until after 11pm.

Worth it though. Good craic and can happily scroll by the multiple monikers guy.

Looks like the brothers at the SFA are up to their usual tricks.

Clancy and Collum (neither of whom I think are great refs) need to watch their backs.

If I may I’ll put this thought out there before retiring for the night.

    Two Ross County players cited.

I thought the two Ross County tackles were red cards.

    The ref didn’t.

He had SEEN and DEALT WITH them during the game.

    Yellow cards.

Cast your minds back just a few years.

Morelos committed four red card offences in a single game including deliberate physical assaults on Scott Brown and Anthony Ralston.

    Celtic made a formal complaint.

    Remember the response?

No retrospective action would be taken because …

… the referee had SEEN and DEALT WITH them during the match.

They make it up as they go along.

  10. The worm has turned.

While I disagree with Lundstram’s red being Downgraded to yellow (a lunge from behind with a high possibility to injure from a thug, with previous), we all know Hibs would not have been pummeling the hun goal with 10 minutes to go; had they not been down to 9 men.

Outcome? They drop 2 points and have the services of a talentless thug for their next game – result.

Compare to other seasons where they had players sent off retroactively but only after the points were secure, usually by a narrow single goal win.

Keep the faith, this’ll turn out alright. Mon the PSV!

I was one of them .

I also told the story of Scott Brown naming Jullien as one of the reasons our 10 in a row season was such a failure .

Sevco to lose after extra time and penalties, with Tavernier missing his kick.

‘Scotland in the EU will do even better with our natural resources.’

    ###

Just to be clear, when you refer to ‘our’ do you mean Scotland’s or New Zealand’s?

I suppose, living in New Zealand, you wouldn’t actually be affected by the huge cuts in public expenditure that would be required for Scotland to meet the accession criteria for EU membership. Heck, you might even be so detached, living on the other side of the planet, that you aren’t even aware of what they are or what they would entail.

Thing is, some of those of us who live here are aware of this stuff, understand what it would mean in practice, and are maybe a bit more concerned than you are.

  16. On this day …

2000: Mark Burchill scores the fastest hat-trick in Celtic history with three goals in a little under four minutes as the Hoops thumped Jeunesse d’Esch in the UEFA Cup at Parkhead.

No matter the opposition that takes some doing .

Tonight is almost as big as the Ramsay penalty miss.

  21. Ross Co might actually be better for the 2 being banned from Ibrox game.

They have 3 days to prep and a reasonable squad to fill in with.

An Tearmann, aye mate. Done all the tourist stuff in Derry over the years and the wild Atlantic Way. Missus cousins live in Dungloe, the McGlynns. Really just catching up with old friends, though I fancy a visit to Teach Jack’s for the craic. 😁

  24. Union Ernie I speak with my family in Scotland almost every day, I chew the fat. I have a big whanau and I know what they are going through. Unionism has failed Scotland. Brexit is an unmitigated disaster riddled with lies, conmen and corruption.

I am coming home next week, possibly for the last time. I will judge for myself. I always have hope that Scotland can make its own choices and control its own destiny. I may die in New Zealand but my soul will always be in Scotland. Hail Hail.

    GERS figures just in :-

    Revenue £73.8 billion

    Public spending £97.5 billion.

    Deficit .£ 23.7 billion.

No amount of spin can deflect massive cuts in public spending to meet EU criteria.
