Early in the summer I said that to re-sign Kelechi Ineanacho would be an admission of failure that we were unable to scout a player better than one who was unable to compete for 90 minutes last term.
Then we were told the manager wanted him, while hearing that it was difficult to recruit players to Scotland (which is true). Kelechi was invited back, presumably because those privy to inside info on our recruitment plans believed he was better than our alternatives.
Celtic had an option to retain the player for next season, allowed it to lapse, provided Kelechi’s agent with a ‘Player in demand’ opportunity and saw him sign for Turkish side Bursaspor. Meanwhile, there is not a whisper from Celtic. Genuine incredulity among the fans is unanswered, I can only assume because explaining would not make things more palatable.
We will speak more about the direction of the club before the start of the season, but there is plenty to be alarmed about.

Collectively they are completely useless and should’ve been cleared out already for last year’s debacle. Nancy alone is a sacking offence. Another meek ECL elimination and you can write this season off – all energies will be focused on the self-centred incompetents running our club into the ground.

A little history lesson on Celtic’s finances at the turn of the century.
In 1998/99, Celtic failed to retain the title, finishing 5 points behind Rangers, who won the Treble.
In an effort to redress this, Celtic spent £14.7m on players in 1999/2000, financed largely by borrowing.
99/00 was a disaster. Celtic finished 21 points behind Rangers, who won their 11th title in 12 years. Celtic lost £4.6m, and net debt jumped from £3.7m to ְ£14.5m. Cash reserves were down to £1.2m.
Rangers, seeing little threat from Celtic and looking to be a force in Europe, spent £36.3m on new players in 2000/01.
How did Celtic, short on cash and mired in debt, respond? Settle for another 2nd place finish?

We know how 2000/01 ended: A glorious Treble and 15 points clear of Rangers.
A quarter century of sustained success had begun. 20 titles and 44 domestic trophies from 00/01 to 25/26.
How did Celtic reverse the malaise so quickly and completely?
They went for broke, going deeper in debt and accepting losses, while hoping to return to sustainability at some point in the future.
First, they hired Martin O’Neill, who likely told the board to not bother unless they backed him.
Celtic took on more loans, including a large overdraft, and invested heavily in the squad: Sutton, Hartson, Lennon, Thompson, etc. The £22m spent on player acquisitions was not topped until Ange in 21/22.
By year-end, while we rejoiced in the Treble, Celtic had lost £8.7m, had net debt of £29.6m, and had £87,000 (yes, THOUSAND) in cash.
A share issue, the 2nd to last one issued by Celtic, raised £22.5m just after year-end to relieve some of the financial pressure.
What Celtic did then was pretty much the NORM for most football clubs, both elite and non-elite ones chasing promotion: they used debt, investor funding, or both in an effort to move up a level. They had AMBITION.
Celtic lost over £50m from 99/00 to 05/06. Their largest shareholder then, as now, was Dermot Desmond.
What is Celtic’s ambition now, beyond trying to finish 1 point better than Rangers? Earn a bunch of bank interest? Send a big check to HMRC after another profitable season?

That does not mean Rangers are in breach of FSR.
It is highly unlikely they are.
The takeaway from that is that with higher income and cash in the bank why are Celtic not spending to equivalent level?
That is why understanding how FSR works is important.
It lets our support ask Celtic the right questions.
