Fifa, Keane, Davie Hay

And, they, gave us………. Davie Hay.  Enormous thanks to Davie Hay for coming onto the blog this morning.  It was great to read his responses on playing for and managing Celtic.  If you missed him, catch up from 09:44 here, you’ll enjoy it.

At the risk of commenting on Roy Keane when few of us know much about what happened last night….  I remain pleased we didn’t appoint him manager in the summer.  Very pleased.

Really disappointed at the outcome of the Fifa investigation into the awarding of the Fifa World Cups for 2018 1nd 2022, although, as I type that sentence, the reasons perhaps become clear.  As with all of these things, I’m specifically thinking about the Lord Nimmo Smith SPL inquiry here, football governing bodies ask the questions they want answered.  It’s not the independence of the investigator which is important, it’s who sets the scope of investigation.

You can get copies of Caesar & the Assassin, Billy McNeill and Davie Hay’s accounts of managing Celtic from Jock Stein’s departure until the appointment of Liam Brady, here.

  1. prestonpans Bhoy- He was good for Motherwell. Not sure if he played in that Scottish cup tie when we lost 3-2 after being 2-0 up, but he was a very good player in a useful team.

I just love their outlook that everyone else are the bigots/haters and they are always right, the legneds that they are.

  4. I was afraid the Wayne Rooney thing might arise, when I asked that question…

On that note, I guess you could say that Murray was well and truly rogered today …. (apologies to any aussies who are reading)….

Goldstar, Vic scored a goal with a brilliant shot to beat us one nil at Celtic Park around September 1977.

Jim ‘Ben’ Casey almost equalised with an equally good shot that hit the bar.

The three two Motherwell cup game, Boby Graham & Wulie Pettigrew ran the show in the second half in that cup game in 1976.

Kenny had scored with a brilliant free kick in the first half.

  8. Dallas Dallas,

Haven’t thought of Jim Casey for years. He was some player too, although he never really fulfilled his potential.

We had some amazingly gifted players at that time.

  9. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Parkheadcumsalford, the last I heard Jim was running the Strathduie boozer just off High Street.

At Jim’s wedding, his dad or father in law was stabbed when some neds were trying to damage or steal a car outside the hall the reception was in.

He had the misfortune of scoring an OG for the deidsters in a league cup semi, Ithink in late 1978, they won three two and Tommy was sent off.

  10. garygillespieshamstring on

Also George and John mccluskey. Would Brian McGrane also have been a contemporary of theirs?

  11. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Garygillespie, Peter ran like Kenny but I think that was the only comparable thing they had. Peter ended up making a career at Dundee.

Another former player who was good in our reserves was Wullie Temperley. He was freed then scored the winner for Hibs against us at Celtic Park in a league game in the 78/79 season.

  12. garygillespieshamstring on

    Dallas,

It was his father in law. I think the strathduie changed hands a few years back . I think he also had pubs in mollinsburn and baillieston.

  13. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Garygillespie, the loss of John McLuskey was a blow for us. I saw him a few times for Scotland under fifteen’s and what a player he would have been, he had even more skill than George. John scored a fantastic solo goal to beat England under fifteens at Wembley.

I’m sure he had a blood condition which caused a clot to form in his leg and was lucky it wasn’t amputated.

  14. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Garygillespie, I hope Jim got better luck in business than he had when he played for us.

What should have been the best day of Jim and his wife’s lives, was destroyed by some wee a-hole ned.

  15. garygillespieshamstring on

Yes . I remember Willie temperley. Used to watch the reserves a lot back then. Atholl Henderson was a centre forward we picked up on a free. I think big jock took a punt on him but he never came close to making it. Andy Ritchie was another great player but he went to Morton in a swap for Roy Baines.

The same people who are ignoring the biggest and most powerful paedo file ring in the world at Westminster are now telling you Russia is moving troops and tanks into an ethnic cleansing zone but wait for it, for all that technology they don’t have any evidence or photo that actually proves this, you’ve to accept library pictures as proof.

MSM junkies that squeal about the MSM until it suits their agenda.

  17. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Garygillespie, Jock signed Atholl Henderson in 1976 I think. From memory, he only started one game and also former Jags player, Johnny Gibson, that same season.

Andy Ritchie would have been our equivalent of Matt Le Tissier, great talent but not the fittest. He’s one of the most skilful players I have seen playing for us before his move to the tail of the bank.

Tommy used to tell a story of Andy going to City Bakeries at Parkhead Cross after training and getting a free lunch. He told the staff that he couldn’t get a job and didn’t eat so his children could get a meal.

    Goodnight all and sleep well.

  25. Anyone remember Tommy O’Hara who came thru in the early 70’s but never quite made it with Celtic and eventually moved on to Motherwell.

Yea..John (Friar Tuck) was diagnosed with Thrombosis after just one game for Celtic which meant a knock on the leg could kill him (Blood clot)..a Great guy and Gentleman..
