Fifa’s ‘The Best’ shines from ‘67

286

I discussed their winning of the European Cup with each of the Lisbon Lions. To say they knew nothing the impact their achievement would have is an understatement. While the uniqueness of the event was clear at the time, they were the first British team to reach the final, never mind win the trophy; they could never know light from that day would shine as brightly half a century into the future.

Celtic fans won the ‘The Best’ award from Fifa yesterday for the full stadium tifo at the game against Hearts in May to mark the 50th anniversary of Lisbon. We won it because football people, of all colours, respect heritage. And heritage comes no greater than Celtic’s.

None of this would have happened without Jock Stein and his players. They provided the foundation for everything that followed, including Martin O’Neill’s revival of the club in 2000 and Brendan Rodgers’ general Invincible-ness.

Just about every element of what you recognise as Celtic today is due to them: the trophies and glory, Champions League nights, the stadium and Celtic Way, even achievements of the Foundation can be traced back to the foundations laid in ‘67.

Congratulations to everyone involved with the tifo display. Which I missed. But I’m sure it was nice.

KEVIN GRAHAM hosts another match day podcast from Hampden on Saturday featuring some of FIFA’s Best Supporters in the World.

This week’s Matchday Special saw Brendan Rodgers’ side carry a 59-match undefeated domestic run into the League Cup semi final against Neil Lennon’s Hibs.

Kevin provides pre and post-match discussion as well as in-match analysis in what will be a regular Celtic State of Mind feature.

Great stuff by the Dortmund fans.

The charitible work done by our fans should not be ignored, I could list the deeds but I feel by reminding you I have no need to. The £186,000 for the Palistinian folk is a particular favourite of mine but Mary’s Meals, the Kano Foundation, foodbank collections, Poppy appeal donation (unsurpassed in Scotland/probably Britain), to name but a few. AWESOME!

  2. WWW , CCB and BMCWP no words can possibly help at this time but hope that the knowledge that so many of the Cqn community are sending thoughts and prayers wIll give you some solace

The control of mass media, really does shape opinion. The Internet has gone some way to breaking the yolk of news control and promoting a kind of freedom of speech, but control is being re-asserted inexorably, bit by bit. Orwell was bang on.

Who are we at war with anyway? I am sure I remember a time when it was Eastasia.

  7. Sorry I cannot get too worked up about any award sanctioned by FIFA. They probably are looking for a back hander for giving us it. Look we know we are the best supporters in the world, we don’t need a corrupt organisation like FIFA confirming it. By the way no reaction over on Fester Fester about it yet.

What, they didn’t even mention that we were shortlisted for TWO awards and won one?

Weird. When a film is even nominated for an award, that is headlined, win or not.

I’m out and about but I’ll scrounge around for one of the Timelines used in the development of the case that links to supporting documents.

Some of the comments no longer apply or are are as apt because of later information emerging or increased understanding of the process, but from memory one original comment around an e mail of 19th September is looking to be right on the button and why an investigation is unavoidable.

I think the word devastating has already been used but the passing of a life long love, partner and friend is just that.

I recall when facilitating a bereavement program dealing with a gentleman who was devastated and the mark that made on me in empathy terms.

My condolences of course and strength on your ongoing journey through grief.

It is a road best travelled with friends who understand.

  16. I have just came back from the funeral of my friend Big Davy Welsh at St Fillans RC church in Crieff, The order of service had the Celtic crest below his picture and also a beautiful wreath of the crest on top of his Coffin.

Dave,s nephew Tommy lurks on here and is season ticket holder with his son in the lower section of the Lions stand. It was sad when he told me that his 2 boyhood heroes had died in the same week Peter smiths funeral in same place on Thursday, they instilled in Tommy his love for Celtic and for that he is eternally grateful. Dave was 83 and had been ill quite a long time but Peter was only 66 and lived for just 6 weeks after being diagnosed with the big C. Peter was a fantastic sportsman great football player, 100 plus break player at snooker great darts player and recently took up bowls and won the club championship at our local club, but most of all one of the nicest guys you’d ever meet and big Celtic fan. If you could add these bhoys to your prayers it would be much appreciated.HH

I just wonder about Celtics policy about the term Old Firm. There’s no doubt that we retired it in 2012. The match report in the Celtic View clearly stated “last ever OF game”. However, apart from PL’ s Rory Brenner quip the club has been strangely quiet. Occasionally, a player or manager will slip OF into a quote. So, I doubt there has been an internal ban on the phrase.

    * The term comes from the commercial benefits of the two clubs’ rivalry, which were viewed with distaste in some parts in the early days of the game, or alternatively may stem from a satirical cartoon published in a magazine prior to the 1904 Scottish Cup Final between the sides, depicting an elderly man with a sandwich board reading “Patronise The Old Firm: Rangers, Celtic Ltd”, highlighting the mutual commercial benefits of their meetings.

No matter what at the time we were happy to go along with this and often dined out on it.

There was a time when deidco were evidently non-sectarian and whose 1st chairman james henderson was a fairly decent man. He was renowned for his work among the poor children of Govan and the club had a notable record of helping charitable causes including Catholic charities. Matches were played for the benefit of the unemployed in 1886 and donations made to help the Unemployed Relief Fund in the Kinning Park area.

There were good relations between both clubs in spite of primrose-ure and the lonesome boatman pledging them tae the trooser lifting cause. The first persons to greet the Celtic party on arriving at Abbotsinch Airport were john lawrence and his board, they also toasted Bob Kelly 20 months later in their boardroom on his receiving his knighthood and it was they who backed us when graham and swann tried tae put us out of the game on account of the “Flag”. Money was probably behind that. so what, they did it in spite of our alleged Edinburgh “cousins” distaste for us.

Personally I feel that relations deteriorated when the rugby supporting scrap man arrived on the scene and his motive was not sectarian but purely money. A mendacious narcissistic bird man who was put in his place by a wee a Croy bookkeeper even though w e had CA’s on our board unable to do so.

    —————-

I noted that BBC 2 gave coverage to yesterday’s FIFA Best Awards on this morning’s Derbyshire & BBC Newsroom live programmes – this was one of their lead stories.

I would like to know why the BBC was happy to cover a Portuguese winner and a Dutch winner of FIFA awards, but did not feel it appropriate to even mention the only UK award winner – the Fans of Celtic FC?

I would be grateful to know what was the editorial decision making process around this blatant omission?

Were this the fans of an EPL team, or perhaps another Scottish Team, what would the coverage have been?

I look forward to your reply.
