Fifa’s ‘The Best’ shines from ‘67

286

I discussed their winning of the European Cup with each of the Lisbon Lions. To say they knew nothing the impact their achievement would have is an understatement. While the uniqueness of the event was clear at the time, they were the first British team to reach the final, never mind win the trophy; they could never know light from that day would shine as brightly half a century into the future.

Celtic fans won the ‘The Best’ award from Fifa yesterday for the full stadium tifo at the game against Hearts in May to mark the 50th anniversary of Lisbon. We won it because football people, of all colours, respect heritage. And heritage comes no greater than Celtic’s.

None of this would have happened without Jock Stein and his players. They provided the foundation for everything that followed, including Martin O’Neill’s revival of the club in 2000 and Brendan Rodgers’ general Invincible-ness.

Just about every element of what you recognise as Celtic today is due to them: the trophies and glory, Champions League nights, the stadium and Celtic Way, even achievements of the Foundation can be traced back to the foundations laid in ‘67.

Congratulations to everyone involved with the tifo display. Which I missed. But I’m sure it was nice.

KEVIN GRAHAM hosts another match day podcast from Hampden on Saturday featuring some of FIFA’s Best Supporters in the World.

This week’s Matchday Special saw Brendan Rodgers’ side carry a 59-match undefeated domestic run into the League Cup semi final against Neil Lennon’s Hibs.

Kevin provides pre and post-match discussion as well as in-match analysis in what will be a regular Celtic State of Mind feature.

No chance, no that I wish any ill on any footballer, but a few I could happily see getting crocked for their services to the game, he is one of them.

The first time I sussed Thompshun was game managing was a game at Pittodrie, he controlled the game from the start to the finish, we drew if I remember, would have won with an honest referee.

I know personally how amazing cqn is at times like this.

It’s at times like this you know why this is the best family you can belong to.

  4. Lenny’s Hibs team played well there. Ambrose, McGeouch and McGinn strolled the match. Hertz very poor side. Hibs will destroy the tribute act at Easter Road, fancy a 0-0 at Murrayfield on Saturday.

  5. Just realised that our FIFA Best Fans Award was for the Green Brigade’s Tifo at the final game of last season.

Well done to the GB and all the fans who celebrated our club’s greatest football achievement.

That is the last Celtic match I was at. I remember it well because I was looking forward to the celebrations, but also, being part of the Tifo.

When the display ended most people threw their plastic sheet away. I didn’t. I sheepishly put it in my back pack, took it home with me and placed it with my collection of Celtic memorabilia.

Glad I did now. Will get a newspaper cutting (if I can find one) of our latest award and stick it to the sheet of plastic.

And when the time comes, it will be passed on to the sons and heirs.

*normally I would say nae chance as the huns widnae be allowed tae drap points but then again I didnae think they would lose on Sunday.

  7. Thank you all for your kind messages re Davy and Peter. My best friend and I were recalling today as 11 year old boys from a very rural area not street wise 66/67 season ,and other than family no real adult friends then going on the supporters bus and suddenly you had 30 big brothers and 10 uncles who looked out for you and arranged your lift over the turnstiles and made sure you were safe until you got back off the bus safe again. These bhoys became friends for life and my wee tribute to these two today is nowhere near sufficient to honour their memory . This is what it means to be Celtic.HH

  8. Sincere condolences to firstly,

Everyone who have lost love ones recently will be in my prayers.

As Jamesgang said, a lot of comfort to be found on CQN at times like thesem

  9. McGinn is improving a lot and playing very well just now. I don’t think he could be the successor to Brown but he could be a Celtic player if he continues in this vein. McGeough is very tidy on the ball, he has a lot of skill and eye for a pass but of course there is a lot more to it than that. Looking good on the eye for Hibs and being a Celtic player is a whole different ball game. Jamie Walker is very much a Hun type player on the other hand, he’s well overrated. I see Kenny McLean has also told Aberdeen he isn’t renewing his deal and will be off at the end of the season. No doubt he’s been tapped up by Sevco. He wouldn’t get a seat on our team bus.

Tough reading back tonight, starting from last night’s post from WWW.

It shows that we should be more understanding of each other as we are usually unaware of that troubles and pain a poster may be suffering.

We are all Celts and should be supportive of each other.

    Let’s offer a prayer for the survivors…..

When I was gainfully employed I was in Houston regularly.

Head office was at Sam Houston Westheimer intersection.

  28. Invincible GG,

Yes, been here for 3 years, just experienced my first hurricane. Westheimer runs forever, great street, location of the Houston Bobby Lennox CSC.

I actually prefer basketball when it comes to the US sports, Ciaran worships James Harden, more than Moussa Dembele which disappoints me.
