Fife, soft tissue and protecting investors

816

A stream of criticism appeared in yesterday’s comments section to greet media coverage of yesterday’s Scottish Cup draw away to Inverness Caledonian Thistle or Dunfermline on 4 February.  Such is our lot (long) after shock cup defeats; remember, these guys literally have to write something.  No one mentioned 1961 so put your money on a trip to Fife next month.

A few moments ago Celtic confirmed Beram Kayal went through his operation yesterday and is now targeting a return to action for preseason.  Irrespective of the circumstances of the incident in which he was injured, Beram’s is another in a long list of soft tissue injuries Celtic players have suffered in recent seasons, a fact which should engage minds at the club.

Rangers issued a really curious statement following the suspension of trading in their shares by the Plus Stock Exchange.  Many Rangers fans have invested thousands of pounds in club shares and bonds, so one would have expected to read the obligatory suggestion from the company that investors take professional advice when addressing the withdrawal of the share disposal service.  Still, at least they didn’t suggest “Rangers Football Club PLC could survive any administration event but feels it would not be the end of the world if it didn’t”.  That kind of comment from those charged to look after their interests really would alarm shareholders.

  1. Ipswich Town boss Paul Jewell is hopeful of signing Leicester City defender Sean St Ledger after agreeing a fee as well as terms with the player.

But Jewell says the 27-year-old, who has made eight league starts this term, has a number of offers to consider.

“Everything’s agreed between the two clubs and with the player’s personal terms,” he told BBC Radio Suffolk.

“I spoke to him on Monday. He has got a few options. Hopefully he will choose us. But we’re waiting on an answer.”

Do you think we are back in for him?

  2. Paul67

Gutted indeed about Kayal’s injury. He was coming on to a real bit of form.

However I am a bit perplexed by your comment

“Irrespective of the circumstances of the incident in which he was injured, Beram’s is another in a long list of soft tissue injuries Celtic players have suffered in recent seasons, a fact which should engage minds at the club.”

I do not think there is any preparation that Celtic could do to avoid an injury occuring as a result of the challenge made by elbows on Kayal except maybe send the players out in armoured tanks. It is not as though Kayal is in the mold of Willo Flood or Paddy McCourt…he is a sturdy bhoy.

    Let’s do this together

Type in google. John Reid club debt

Hey presto what comes up by john Reid telling us all the size of the debt

    First three relevant results:

Chairman Reid hails ‘outstanding’ Hoops after bank debt is slashed …

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/…/Chairman-Reid-hails-outstanding-Hoops-ban…15 Aug 2011 – The club’s net bank debt stood at £530000 – well down on the … Chairman John Reid said in his annual statement: ‘Both of these higher debt …

This one is quite clearly referring to net bank debt – the clue is in the ‘net bank debt’ part. Again, John Reid does not state that the club’s debt is £500k

Fußball 2012: John Reid hails Celtic’s drop in debt

fifa12cheats.blogspot.com/…/john-reid-hails-celtic-drop-in-debt.html15 Aug 2011 – The club’s net bank debt stood at £530000 – well down on the previous … Chairman John Reid said in his annual statement: “Both of these …

Again, Reid does not state that club debt is £500k and the article again relates bank debt only.

Celtic chairman hails Neil Lennon after club posts profits – ESPN …

soccernet.espn.go.com/…/celtic-chairman-hails-neil-lennon-after-club…15 Aug 2011 – Celtic chairman John Reid has praised manager Neil Lennon for … as the club reported a return to profit and a reduction in bank debt of more …

And once more, just for measure ‘reduction of bank debt’ pops it’s head in there.

Have a read through the results yourself and look for trade creditors, debts falling after 12 months etc – Celtic are/were easily upwards of £20m in debt (IIRC) when those figures were published. This whole “spend some money, get into a little debt” nonsense needs to be knocked on the head – we are in debt and more than just a little.

    Disagree.

I think for all the possession we have it demoralises our own defence (which was fairly good last year and this) if we don’t put away the chances we get. It also has encourages other teams who know they have been outplayed but ultimately are still in the game due our profligacy in front of goal.

A big centre-forward who can head the ball is a must before we look at centre-halves in my opinion.

  6. To be honest I hope Beram is not missed significantly in terms of results.

Time for others to fill the gap that he leaves. Victor is yer man!

  7. Dirtymac- in the Cairney book he talks about going to the famous game against Clyde, the last appearance of the Lions, and he gives the attendance as’ 35,000′.

Now I think part of the ground was closed that day, but for such an emotive occasion someone must have been massaging the numbers.

‘26,000’ used to be the going rate during the Desmond White era.

As I’ve said before, in the ole days they didn’t count you when you did go but now they count you if you don’t.

Must have been a lot of priests in that day,eh?

As you say, shocking that they got away with it.

  10. How many times do we hear about the Diving Rat being injured and how it affects the huns? Look at the number of lengthy injury absences we have had for key players this season. Still, we have a squad that can cope with it far more than theirs can

St Ledger is no better a centre half than Wilson, Rogne, Wanyama or Mulgrew. If we sign a centre half he needs to be an automatic first pick and an improvement on what we have.

Your comment however re 1961 re-opened what remains one of my biggest regrets ” the Eddie Connachan” Final Replay,I dont think I have really ever got over that disappointment.

I hope Dunfermline get through as long as Jim McIntyre does not wear a white raincoat!! Those with long memories will know what I mean.

  17. pabloh_AKA_NEIL LENNON on

I like the sound of Salihi for signing, good scoring record, good age – he could add a little more experience. Could be a hidden gem.

Kayal will be a big loss. But we are fortunate to have so much midfield cover.

In theory Izzaguirre returns fully at left back allowing ledley to play CM (his most effective possition in my opinion). That’s before you consider the return of goal scoring sensation and link up man Commons. Then there’s the form of Wanyama. Not all doom and gloom but get well soon Beram. I’m ten months on from a similar injury and i’m still not right.

  18. Never mind soft tissue, Paul. You should be condemning a football culture that tolerates McCulloch-style “tackles”. Compare with the tackle for which Kompany was red-carded against ManU.

ST I know you’re probably lying in you’re bed of nails (or a gum tree) just now as its about 1am out there, but I thought I’d say that I agree we’re shy on goalscorers, its a problem that will manifest itself when our two strikers get kicked all over Scotland in the 2nd half of the season, the huns know they can get away with it, in this not so fair play league of ours.

The sorest part was that it wasn’t just that which appeared to go on – would loved to have had the City of London police take a look at a couple of big transfers from that era: Kenny and Charlie – insane that they commanded fees less than £1m between them, even back then. Can you imagine the team of 87/88 had he still been alive? McStay – £900k to Inter?

That it appeared to continue long after White had, erm, departed was equally a sin.

Re: this “English Tory” stuff. Cameron is the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. If the Scottish people don’t want to be part of the UK, they will soon have the chance to vote to leave. Otherwise, we should drop the idea that it’s somehow illegitimate of our country’s head of government to get involved in one of the vital constitutional questions of our time, particularly when the Scottish Government has no lawful means of holding a referendum without being granted the power to do so by the UK Parliament.

Anyway, what the SNP are proposing is not independence. It’s provincial status within the EU, a bankrupt and anti-democratic institution with a pathological hatred of the nation-state. You may have noticed that, after two decades of talking up Ireland as the model for an “independent” Scotland, the SNP no longer mentions the I-word, because that country has been deliberately looted and ruined by the European Commission and the ECB.

We had a little taste of what an “independent” Scotland would be like with the recent offensive communications bill, a measure that was illiberal, authoritarian, and discriminatory against football fans, and every single SNP MSP voted for it. The SNP has proven itself to be parochial, intolerant, and ignorant.

I can’t believe the Scottish people would be unwise enough to break up the UK, particularly in these uncertain times.

A simple yes/no referendum should settle the question for a generation. 2011 will turn out to have been the SNP’s high water mark, much as the Quebec separatists were once the dominant force in their part of the world but have long since receded back to the fringes. (thumbsup)

The lack experience and young guys who want that experience (as opposed to just chasing a buck) is sadly lacking up here.

In addition, I have 3 Huns working for me and no Tims so while I’m the boss and get away with giving back more than I receive, it would be nice to have one or 2 more to fight the good fight for me at times :-)

What better way to recruit than through a Celtic Site HAHA.
