Fife, soft tissue and protecting investors

816

A stream of criticism appeared in yesterday’s comments section to greet media coverage of yesterday’s Scottish Cup draw away to Inverness Caledonian Thistle or Dunfermline on 4 February.  Such is our lot (long) after shock cup defeats; remember, these guys literally have to write something.  No one mentioned 1961 so put your money on a trip to Fife next month.

A few moments ago Celtic confirmed Beram Kayal went through his operation yesterday and is now targeting a return to action for preseason.  Irrespective of the circumstances of the incident in which he was injured, Beram’s is another in a long list of soft tissue injuries Celtic players have suffered in recent seasons, a fact which should engage minds at the club.

Rangers issued a really curious statement following the suspension of trading in their shares by the Plus Stock Exchange.  Many Rangers fans have invested thousands of pounds in club shares and bonds, so one would have expected to read the obligatory suggestion from the company that investors take professional advice when addressing the withdrawal of the share disposal service.  Still, at least they didn’t suggest “Rangers Football Club PLC could survive any administration event but feels it would not be the end of the world if it didn’t”.  That kind of comment from those charged to look after their interests really would alarm shareholders.

  3. I checked Austrian websites. All news in the Scottish about Celtic interest in Hamdi Salihi come from Kurier who is the newspaper giving mixture of pure fantasy and the truth.

Laola1 who is much reliable source quotes Rapid Manger Stefan Ebner : We have not heard anything from Celtic. They have not contacted with us. The news about Celtic interest in Hamdi Salihi is only a gossip for now.

I checked the stats of the player and must say that have doubts if he is an answer. Maybe Neil Lennon quotation was only the smokescreen.

On what do you base your summation of Paddy’s ability to contribute? He rarely gets a run out against the better opposition.

If you look at last year’s return from the brink following our dismal run of 5 home games, it is no coincidence that it was when Paddy got a run of games from the start, and he started against the huns in the famous 2-0 January win. Sammy gets the plaudits, Paddy was, how would you put it, soopoib.

I would play Paddy every time Hooper or Stokes is not available.

  5. Interesting discussion on Independence and the pure speculation on the mindset of our PM.

Personally, while I have always felt Scottish, while happily holding a British passport, and have even voted for the SNP, I won’t be chancing my arm in any referendum. England, with all its faults, is effectively a secular society and is governed (rightly) in the main by those of a secularist persuasion. We benefit from that here in Scotland, as part of Britain.

I would be concerned if we voted to become a sovereign state that the right wing (fascist/Masons/”Protestants”= bigotted rangers supporters) would have too much influence.

It’s a conundrum. Do we stay British or vote Scottish?

I suspect either way is not going to benefit us much. I would love Scotland to be free.

I take your point about the right wing state but are you not underestimating the immigrant community in Scotland?

There are a lot people of Asian/Eastern European/Irish & African descent in Scotland. They will not vote for this Protestant Free State of Scotland!

Now 80% of what though? The Electrol Roll? Which includes dead people, the mentally incapicated, those in jail and unable to vote and many people will have two votes (due to moving home, at the last election I got a polling card for Glasgow Southside and Uddingston & Bellshill).

I agree with you on this one. A simple majority of those who vote should carry the day.

I would hope that the turnout is high given the importance of the subject though.

But I would leave the qualifying age at 18. That’s what we use for all other elections from local councils upwards. I can’t see any argument for changing it on this one occasion.

    Kevin,

sorry but much as I am an admirer of Paddy’s ball skills and dribbling ability, he consistently slows the game down but for his mazey runs and goals.

He has the ability to beat many a man, and score some super goals against a certain level of opponent but i’m sorry I just don’t see him as an “end product” player that you can rely upon consistently. I wish it were otherwise but it is not.

He is not as effective in the midfield as our other options and I would not drop any of them just to fit Paddy in. He is a bit of a luxury i’m afraid and so I think it is probably best if he moves on– although there will always be a feeling of…. if only!

  18. I'm Neil Lennon (tamrabam) on

Folks debating over Salmond, Cameron, Clegg and Co,

Apart from the colour of their tie – they have morphed into one single amoeba, operating a self preservation society depending on the tie colour. They squabble like the “post code warriors” who clash with youths from neighbouring schemes.

    Has anyone worked out why:

lets say, for the sake of arguments that the tories are in power and bring laws to bash the unions, (as they did) the labour minority of course stood up for the unions, but labour are only in minority and although labour staunchly vote to a man against the union bashing legislation they cannot change the evil tories decisions, until of course the election comes along and labour become the majority. Do labour repeal such legislation? Do they heck. Everyone of the parties follow this golden rule, and it applies to virtually ALL legislation that gets passed

    Another Example

Is it really possible that every labour MP disagrees with every single tory proposal (and vice versa). Surely there is some degree of concensus on some topics, there are hundreds of them, but hey that’s right, they cannot vote with their conscience (if they have one) they vote as they have been told to do, not by the voter but by their leader

    Another example

Imagine that the labour were in power and had 15 years service from the best minister of defence for example that the country has ever seen. The tories win the election and kick out said minister and appoint an ex shop owner instead. How does this benefit the country

I don’t think party politics works have a place in a democracy, in fact party politics defeat the purpose.

If you don’t vote you don’t have the right to complain they said – does that mean if you did vote you are then responsible for the state of country?

If you haven’t yet worked out that the only difference between these politicos is the colour of their tie, you shouldn’t be allowed to vote. 

  22. Paddy gets frustrating when played as an orthodax wide midfielder. He drops deep to collect the ball, often in the full back position, and does not have the physique or pace to do the winger thing.

That’s why I say he should be played off a front man, up the park, where he can annihilate a defence. ‘Number 10s’ are as rare a commodity as good left backs and we should use him more in his best position.

CRAIG Whyte still has the backing of most Rangers supporters although there remain “genuine concerns” about the club’s future, according to the president of the Rangers Supporters Assembly, Andy Kerr.

Trading on Rangers shares was suspended yesterday because of the failure to submit audited accounts, which has also delayed the club’s annual general meeting.

The Scottish champions also confirmed in a statement to the PLUS Stock Exchange that they were considering withdrawing their listing on the exchange in the long term.

Rangers claim the delayed AGM is down to the ongoing dispute with Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs, which is due to come before a tax tribunal next week and could potentially cost the club £49million.

Chairman Whyte has refused to rule out the possibility of administration if Rangers lose the dispute, which centres on payments made before he bought out Sir David Murray last May.

Kerr told Press Association Sport: “The rank and file of the Rangers support want to give Craig Whyte a chance.

“There is the feeling among many fans that ‘at least this guy took it on’.

“More informed supporters and people outside the club who are asking hard and serious questions are perhaps seen as stirring the pot but my personal view is that a lot of those questions are pertinent.

“There are genuine concerns about the mid to long-term future of the club, definitely.

“We are in limbo. We were prior to the takeover and certainly have been since then.

“When I spoke to him last week he was reasonably reassuring and it is encouraging that we are having regular meetings.

“He told us it would be a rough road and costs would have to be cut but we would get through it.

“He hopes to get the accounts signed off soon.

“He is committed to an AGM and it will be within the first quarter, perhaps in March.

“I think the AGM will be pivotal. That’s when shareholders will get the chance to put their questions to him.”

Kerr admits shares and stock markets were not discussed with Whyte but he is relaxed about the situation, believing there are more pressing worries for the club.

“He never mentioned it,” said Kerr. “It was a little bit of a surprise when I heard about it yesterday but in reality it is not a major obstacle.

“Was it another wee negative with regards the club’s reputation that we could have done without? Yes.

“But the more pertinent question is ‘why aren’t the accounts signed off?’ and that’s what he was asked about when I spoke to him last week.

“And I’m sure it has nothing to do with the figures contained within the accounts.

“He told us that not a lot had changed since we last met in September.

“This is an important month for the club, in terms of the tax case, the transfer window and the football.

“Like all fans, I am hoping we come out of this on the right side.”
