Fighting the same foe too many times

1064

Napoleon observed that no one should fight the same enemy too many times, as eventually their superior ways and techniques will become redundant as the inferior foe will eventually hit on a strategy which works.

Dundee United did reasonably well in their two games against Celtic in the last 9 days, despite playing a considerable part of both games with a man disadvantage.  They will arrive at Celtic Park tomorrow night having learned a few lessons, and hooping to compete with a full complement of players.

The danger for Celtic lies in what happened against St Johnstone at Celtic Park earlier this month.  The Perth team have won only two of their nine games since 17 January but they knew what to expect from Celtic, who were marginally off-pace, enough so to leave the field without points.  Another marginally off-pace performance tomorrow night and talk of trebles will evaporate in an instant.

If we’re vulnerable at any point between now and the end of the season, it’s this midweek.

    On us thy poor children bestow a sweet smile;

And now that you’re high in your mansions above,

On Erin’s green valleys look down with your love.

Happy St.Patrick’s Day to all Celts worldwide, always remember St.Patrick came to Ireland in 432. Four Provinces & 32 Counties. St. Patrick was a Tim well before his time. Ireland is Green & White.

  3. In the last 2 games v Dundee Utd I don’t think we have even reached 2nd gear yet should have won both convincingly. Now if we DO manage to move up the gears we can blow them off the park. Playing Stokes and or Commons might give us a wee bit more craft but causes the entire team to slow down. Stokes puts a helluva lot more work onto Izzy as he has to do ALL the running – United tried to double team him on Sunday to little effect.

We should be fully aware of them trying this again but instead put someone like Wakaso to add more pace and enable better cover for Izzy. Ditto on the right with Forrest who can easily take Dixon apart inside or outside. Both would take the pressure off our fullbacks to give us width. However I strongly feel giving Griffiths proper support via Scepovic would allow us much greater threat and really open them out.

No matter what Dundee Utd have learned or do…it’s entirely what Celtic DO that truly matters. 2 goals from 5/6 good chances is decent but we can and should create and score a lot more.

I feel certain they will target Brown and try to pressure the referee into getting him sent off, be aware and play with the head/ A high tempo game from the outset and they simply cannot live with us.

In our favour though is that DU have had he same tiring game as us and so for once we are not up against a rested outfit. Whist they may be up for revenge they also know they lost toe to toe.

Johansen is a loss. Liam should slot in. Does he start Forrest? What about striker?

  10. Dundee utd have won one game since we signed SA and GMS and that was against Stranraer…they have become bad tempered and frustrated,i do think we will miss SJ but think we will have enough to go through,,,

  11. With DU having no obvious left back, Dixon & Dillon suspended, and the chance they may need to play Rankin there, I would imagine Forrest wide right with Commons playing more centrally will be the line up. Hope its Henderson that plays but don’t think it’ll happen (unless Bitton is injured)

  12. Poor Sunderland. A decade of misery ahead once wee Dick’s emptied the coffers and alienated the players.

Rat McCann on SSN there making out Advocaat as one of the world’s top coaches. Three words: Torre Andre Flo. And remind me again who the Hun manager was when we last did the treble…

We haven’t played well against United yet. Dull in the first Tannadice game, sluggish and unconvincing at Hampden on Sunday, about time we clicked again.

Wee Jamsie to fill Jo Hansen’s runaround role on Wednesday, using his energy and pace, score a couple; 3-0 the Hoops.

  13. I just read Phils article there, this is a sad country this if you let it drag you down, thing is I dont, I’m off ti the Brazen to party my Scottish arse off celebrating with the rest of the world, unlike some in this country who just don’t faking get it, awe well, there loss, cheers.

    I agree with you mate.

Dundee UTD are on a bad run and are losing discipline.

I think if we score early they will lose the plot and we could easily take a few off them.

Jackie Mac has them whipped into a feeling that they have suffered a few injustices ( wrongly ) and this makes them fragile

  15. Feel we still have enough in the tank for the next four days, United had there chance, we have nothing to fear.

I can’t see how Dick’s going to empty the coffers. He is only there til the end of the season and there is no transfer window between then. I think the big spending at Deadco was more to do with Sir Minty Moonbeams than wee Dick

  20. BSR,

I just don’t think we had any tempo on Sunday; Not what we’ve become used to.

We did win comfortably in the end but we made it difficult for ourselves and kept them in the game rather than them making any real impression under their own steam.

That’s the way I saw it; felt like we were stuck in 2nd gear.

  22. Rock Tree Bhoy on

Tomorrow night will be a true test of Ronnie’s managerial capabilities, for sure we will be vulnerable, not least because of the current chances created to converted rate, which as we all know at best is less than average, more so because we go into this tie having just won the League Cup on Sunday, a chance for the team to play at being Billy Bigtime, swan around the park tricking and flicking our way to a SC KO. C’mon Ronnie, dont let them do it, make them work their socks off!

  26. Jo Hansen is a big loss for tomorrow as he in my opinion has the best engine in our team, and is right up there for PoTY.

Henderson for me as his replacement as he works hard and also tracks back when required.

Big thumbs up to the Celtic Ticket Office.

The three tickets I was allocated as a result of being moved down from the upper North stand for tomorrow’s game were not beside each other.

I called them on Friday to get them moved but they were unable to help at that time as the payment was coming out of the bank that day (not sure how they are connected but that’s what it is) and was told to call on Monday and they would sort it out. I would need to collect the tickets from the office.

I called on Monday, got reallocated plus bought another ticket. Sent out in the mail yesterday and received them today.

    Perfect.

I’ll be viewing the game from the other side tomorrow in the upper South stand. Hope I remember which way we’re shooting.

  29. If I had to choose – I’ll take a win tomorrow and a defeat on Saturday. Every time.

I fear tomorrow, complacency has to be dealt with by RD, players will be subconsciously thinking the tie is already in the bag.

It’s not, not by a long shot.
