Fighting the same foe too many times

1064

Napoleon observed that no one should fight the same enemy too many times, as eventually their superior ways and techniques will become redundant as the inferior foe will eventually hit on a strategy which works.

Dundee United did reasonably well in their two games against Celtic in the last 9 days, despite playing a considerable part of both games with a man disadvantage.  They will arrive at Celtic Park tomorrow night having learned a few lessons, and hooping to compete with a full complement of players.

The danger for Celtic lies in what happened against St Johnstone at Celtic Park earlier this month.  The Perth team have won only two of their nine games since 17 January but they knew what to expect from Celtic, who were marginally off-pace, enough so to leave the field without points.  Another marginally off-pace performance tomorrow night and talk of trebles will evaporate in an instant.

If we’re vulnerable at any point between now and the end of the season, it’s this midweek.

No Bounce Effect From New Board Or Manager

    March 18, 2015 / Merlin

Last night’s dismal 2-2 draw with Alloa has left Rangers fans in no doubt that the fix of problems on the pitch is far from being a quick one.

Rangers were abysmal and if there is a McCall Factor that provides impetus and a forward thrust to this team, it has yet to kick in.

Off the field, matters are even worse.

Rangers forums abound with fans voicing their concerns that the new regime behind the scenes at Ibrox has not started any better than the new football manager.

And they are right to be concerned.

My understanding is that the cash situation at Ibrox is critical.

The word is that HMRC have not been paid for last month and there is not enough cash to pay wages at the end of this month.

Sports Direct will only advance money from the £5m facility if due diligence is satisfied. That will be a problem considering the short time scale. Besides which, it would be extremely embarrassing if the new board were to be seen going cap in hand to their opponent in the boardroom war.

If the directors cannot pay their bills and they are aware that no further cash is forthcoming then they are trading insolvently. Should liquidation follow, these directors are financially liable.

Not much of a prize for the incoming board members.

The new board appear to have counted on full houses at Ibrox . Even if that had happened there would have been a £200k deficit per month. Last night’s attendance (Rangers v Alloa) was 28,000. Many of these seats would not be paid for on the night. The monthly deficit is therefore much greater than £200k eg £300-£400k.

On top of this, four major staff are now on gardening leave – Ally McCoist £700k pa, Kenny McDowell £220k Derek Llambias £150k Barry leach £140K A total of £1,210,000.

With the product on the park hardly likely to inspire any kind of bounce effect, things look gloomy for the new regime.

We also still await the announcement of the new Nomad. Every day that goes by brings the threat of delisting much nearer.

My information is that at least one person has turned down the CEO job due to the dire state of funds.

You also have to wonder why the print media are not giving the incomers the same level of scrutiny as previous boards. Perhaps for them it’s job done and they have the board they wanted.

It’s all very well saying give the new lot time. The fact is, they got the gig because they told fans things were desperate. So if that is the case, why haven’t they hit the ground running with a raft of clearly laid out plans, strategies and objectives?

The irony here is that, having stoked the unease and suspicions of the fan base, this new regime must now endure the consequences of such trained on them. It is very easy to see that as every day goes by, the supporters are becoming increasingly worried and disconcerted at an apparent lack of forward progress. Dave King’s return to South Africa has not helped.

Sniping at the new board is to be expected from those who opposed them to begin with. But already these have been joined by people who were prepared to give Kingco a chance. The momentum is growing and unless it is halted, even ardent King supporters might turn.

The solution is very simple. Dave King and his cohorts must dig deep to find the finances required to turn things around.

The clock is ticking and this time Rangers’ very existence is at stake.

Should THEY fail in the play offs, there will be immediate league reconstruction to ensure that THEY are in top tier next.season. And we won’t hear a cheep from PL about the integrity of the competition.

In fact he will be leading the reconstruction brigade.

There is absolutely no possibility whatsoever of league reconstruction before next season. Sorry to spoil your attempts to slaughter PL for something he hasn’t said about something that hasn’t and cannot happen.

Right-to-buy move for Scottish football backed by MSPs

    Football match

Fans would be given the first right of refusal if their club put up for sale or goes into administration

    Community to buy football ground

    Gretna enjoys football homecoming

    Football return for Gretna ground

MSPs have backed plans to allow fans the right to buy their football clubs.

Members of the local government committee supported amendments to the Community Empowerment Bill to extend the right-to-buy to football fans.

Green MSP Alison Johnstone, who moved the amendments, told the committee that agreeing to the changes would turn the legislation into a landmark bill.

If passed by the full parliament, supporters’ trusts would get “first refusal” when a club comes up for sale.

A supporters’ trust with a registered interest in a football club would also have the right to buy shares in that football club, including a controlling interest, at any point.

    Nothing to fear

Ms Johnstone said: “This is an extraordinary day for the future of Scottish football.

“We know how badly the game has been struggling, from Gretna to Hearts and Rangers, and we know fan ownership works.

“It’s great that parliament has today united around the principle of a responsible fans’ right to buy their clubs.”

The Scottish Green MSP said that, if passed by the full Scottish Parliament, fans would have “nothing to fear from irresponsible owners like those who have undermined so many clubs”.

She added: “We know there are plenty of good private owners of clubs, and this will not require fans to buy them out, but when they move on, fans will be in the right place to take over if they wish.”

Ms Johnstone’s amendments bring the principles of rural land reform laws, which help communities buy land, to supporters of football clubs.

    Appointed valuer

The new legislation would mean that supporters’ trusts would legally register an interest in a football club.

This would mean the owner of the club would be prohibited from “taking any action with a view to the transfer of ownership of that football club” until it had complied with the act.

The supporters’ trust would then be given an opportunity to buy the club at a price assessed by an appointed valuer.

Local Government Minister Marco Biagi said the Scottish government wanted to give fans the right to buy their clubs using regulations which would be put in place after the bill was passed.

“Affirmative procedure for the development of the details, with the aim put in the bill, would allow consultation with the wider football community; it would allow consultation, as appropriate, with the parliament; and it would ensure that we don’t just endorse the principle but we ensure that any legislation we introduce we get right,” he said.

Thought your stats were interesting and looked at celtic stats on the bbc also for same period for some paranoia searching.

We’ve played 15 games since jan 1st, committed 178 fouls, received 26 yellow cards and 2 reds. Our opponents have committed 154 fouls received 27 yellow cards and 3 reds.

Broadly similar totals although we committed slightly more fouls for every yellow card than our opponents. However, These figures include the 2 ties against Inter which skew the figures. Over these 2 ties against Inter we committed 43 fouls, got 9 yellows and 1 red. Inter committed 16 fouls and got 5 yellows. Again we committed more fouls per yellow than our opponent.

Take the european figures off the total and domestically we committed 135 fouls for 17 yellows and 1 red. Our opponents committed 138 fouls for 22 yellows and 3 reds. We again commit more fouls before getting a yellow than our opponent.

I did manage to find one nugget. In every game we played domestically this year there was only 1 game where we committed fewer fouls yet were given more yellow cards than our opponent;the league cup semi final. I Thank you.

  19. Folk seem more interested in the govan mobs plight than our own big game tonight.

It would be a real disappointment if a lower league game with Alloa has nearly as many supporters attending for a team on a run of 1 win in 9 games as a scottish cup qtr final replay featuring a team going for a treble which has just won the league cup and is top of the top league with only 1 loss in the past 12 games.

    That would be embarrassing.

You keep battering on about the attendance mate. Affording travel to 3 games in a week is beyond a lot of folk.

When folk stump up their season book cash thats a big hit, then there’s the Champions League qualifiers, Europa Cup, Scottish Cup, League cup………..It is ironic that the more successful we are the lower the attendance might be but that’s life.

Each game costs me £70 in fuel/food, time off work and a lot of effort, some canny do that, be thankful you can.

Celtic won the replay 3-1 on the Wednesday in front of 72,000 cash-paying supporters.

It’s not a glamour game anyway.

  27. northerncelt67 on

Playing any team 3 or 4 times in consecutive weeks is dangerous, the ‘law of averages’ would suggest that you may slip up on at least one occasion, even if you are considered to be favourite in each of the games. Lets hope that tonight is not the night we slip up.

I trust Ronnie will choose the best available 11 that we have, and that motivation will not be an issue for the players.

It has been an amazing start to their Celtic careers for S.A and G.M.S, they have taken no time at all to settle and we look much more direct and threatening with both of these guys in our starting eleven. Ronnie will have to decide if it will be Anthony, James, Liam or whoever that best fills these positions tonight.

I will be glad to see S.A and G.M.S back for league duty on Saturday but lets get over this ‘cup’ hurdle tonight before completing the job on Saturday.
