Financial Fair Play takes first big scalp

354

In the European football aristocracy guide, few sit higher than Milan, even though performances in recent seasons are well down on their historical standards.  After giving new manager, Rino Gattuson, around €200m to spend last season, they qualified for this season’s Europa League group stage.

But therein lies the problem: you cannot just throw money at football these days and hope to pass Uefa’s Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations.  Europe’s governing body yesterday banned Milan from European football for one year as a consequence.

The club indicated they would appeal, noting that new Chinese owners invested €88m in capital “not loans” and were on a firm financial footing.  This is true, but that one-off splurge on bling for our old pal Rino pushed them outside of the scope of FFP; the ban has been in the post for a year.

For Milan, this is humiliating and will cost them north of €10m, but it sends out an important signal to all.  Financial Fair Play has taken its first big scalp.

Stiliyan Petrov match worn Champions League shirt raffle

We have a very special raffle, running until tomorrow. The shirt Stiliyan Petrov wore in Celtic’s 0-0 draw with Bayern Munich during our 2003 Champions League campaign is available. You can buy a ticket for £1 here on ebay.  Stan signed the shirt.

All proceeds go to the Stiliyan Petrov Foundation to aid research into leukaemia and cancer treatments.  Stiliyan’s recover from leukaemia shows us just how far treatments have come, but as our own CQN community knows too well, more progress is needed.  The draw will be made at Woodside Hotel, Aberdour, where our CQN Open Golf Day evening events take place.

It will cost you £1, or £50 if you want 50, and you might win a great memento.

So it seems as if both Boyata and Lustig will be unavailable for multiple champions league qualifying rounds.

That’s two out of our starting back four and it looks as if we are doing nothing to remedy this situation- the best we can muster is a trial for a player from Hull who has hardly kicked a ball for two years.

Given where we are just now, are we therefore weaker going into this year’s champions league qualifier compared to last?

    Fortunately,as you know,they’re a pair of bomb-scares,so won’t be missed(!)

Tbh,I think they would be unlikely to be back before our third set of games even had they both been knocked out at group stage.

They need a break of about a month, and then at least a week or two to get back up to speed.

No way we will see either in a Celtic jersey before, say, our second league match at the earliest.

Our back 4 for our opening tie against Linfield was Lustig Simunovic Sviatchenko Tierney

We still have 2 of those plus our best centre back Ajer so we have one more position to fill from Hendry, Bitton, Ralston, Odubajo(?), Calvin Miller, Johnny Hayes plus any new signings.

  14. If Celtic were to sell DB does anyone actually believe that he is worth any less than any of the English central defenders. The bottom line is he is a regular champions league defender and proven at World Cup level. He’s no VVD but he is at a high level. Much higher than many mid table premiership players who will go for 15/20 million.

Would love to see Belgium win it but it might be beyond them.

    might just be beyond them.

  15. Quite a few players leaving, apart from Morgan, Eddy, being added to the squad, and that’s all,we all know what is needed ,but it’s okay to slag Gerrard, and King, then that’s all that matters with a lot of Celtic Supporters,no stop the kidding, time to put a bit of pressure on Peter Lawell, Brendan Rodgers etc, loanees, players who have been injured. for 2 yrs,not good enough, well for me I support Celtic,I put my money into all things, for the club,I at least expect a few Quality Signings,in the Summer Transfer Window, So stop having a go at Sevco, look to our own club, and ask were is all the Champion’s league , Transfer money ,etc,it’s certainly not being spent on a new,,pitch,a roof, new lights, new speakers around the Stadium,a few tweaks up at Lennoxtown, and Barrowfield, that’s the questions we need answers to,not how bad other teams are Fianincilly.

  16. I was so disillusioned with fitba after the disgraceful officiating @ the Celtic Juventus game.

TBH – I don’t watch fitba anymore unless it is Celtic playing – the big Leagues Big games held no interest for me after that. What is the F’n point?

Celtic and their set piece analysis of where to get goals really worked, Wee Gordon influenced Neil heavily with this. That Fixed referee definitely done a job on Celtic.

VAR is a good thing but…. with no coverage will it really change?

Last year of his contract so value will be less than if he had 2+ years still to go. Still should get around the same as we got for Armstrong £7-8m

  21. TIMBHOY2 on 29TH JUNE 2018 10:12 AM

I would imagine that the bulk of Celtic’s transfer business will be done once the English transfer window closes on 9th August. BR likes to sign players from down South so will wait until their window closes and clubs name their 25 man squads.

  22. As I read Paul’s leaders I become increasingly worried about what Celtic are doing(or not doing).

Paul as ever attempts to rewrite history and distract us with the odd Hun story.

All this nonsense about WGS years being loss years is simply nonsense. During the MON years we did lose money but the idea was to push for success for a while. Paul’s mantra means success is relative. It’s about saving up money every year (for reasons unknown). It’s not really about football success.

And even when Paul discusses the Hun he is now legitimising the 5 way agreement and he is setting you all up for the final sfa fix which kills res12. We all know what is going to happen.

So here you are in 2018.

The Huns and Scotland in general pretending nothing happened. Celtic playing along.

In a couple of years, with Celtics stunning lack of ambition, coupled with the usual cheating, the Huns will eventually takeover again.

We had our chance, those running Celtic betrayed us, and most of you jollies along with it all.

    Wow.

    Is that it?

  23. Ralston, Hendry, Commper, Simunovic, Ajer, Tierney, Bitton, Miller.

3 or 4 from 8. Then add Lustig, Gamboa and Boyata. 3 or 4 from 11.

Miller probably isn’t ready and I am not sure about Ralston. The reality is that we will have a backline from Hendry, Commper, Simunovic, Ajer, Tierney and Bitton. However, if the defence we have at this time cannot overcome Alashkert, Valur Reykjavík or Rosenborg then we will deserve to go out.

No need to panic! Plenty of time to get quality in that will improve on what we already have, and I must say that Gamboa, Lustig and Boyata have been very impressive in their World Cup games.

    Gamboa was magic.

He won’t be the Massive Character that Officer Lustig is and perhaps that holds him back. His height is probably the biggest factor in not being in the mix.

He done Costa Rica and Celtic proud with Every display. I hope he has a Future @ Celtic.
