Finding a keeper should be the easy part of the week

449

I think we all got that sinking feeling when we heard it was a knee injury, which kept Craig Gordon from appearing in the second half on Saturday. So news today that the player hopes to be back this season is a great relief. It still, however, mean we need to make moves to secure a replacement.

Dorus de Vries did well on Saturday, in particular with his distribution from feet, but we cannot play have a season with only a 37-year-old keeper. This will be causing some stress at Celtic Park right now but it should not be too difficult a position to fill. Fraser Forster was fifth choice at Newcastle when we loaned him.

There are plenty of clubs with three or more good keepers. My preference would be to get someone with the profile of Fraser; someone we could mould with an eye on a future permanent move, but I suspect this is likely to be a risk-averse appointment and we’ll get someone the manager is confident can do the job.

Resisting the temptation to talk about Charly for now. There’s lots to say on the subject, but let’s wait for things to formalize.

  1. CALTONTONGUES – In theory, unless the government listen to the objections of the shire council. Many residents of Westhill will be in revolt.

It is a sensible move to a purpose built facility, but although on the face of it access off the new bypass looks easy, the way the connecting road has been joined to the new road by means of a roundabout is likely to lead to traffic chaos. Seems there is also the idea to use the Kingswells park and ride as a car park – that’s fine, but it a dark mile walk, and would be very unpleasant on a cold night. If only these major developments could be designed in concert with transport improvements rather than after them.

  2. Minceyheidman, was Billy O’Brien the backup when Man City came here in the Champions League? He must have some ability if he’s been to that level, never mind playing for Chick Young’s favourite club.

  3. fieldofdrams

Yes Billy was at Celtic Park on the bench that night.

Very sad what happened in his life but was adored at St Mirren and really enjoyed his time there.

    He has the talent.

  4. Just checked out Billy O’Brien’s back story, jeez-oh, that is tragic. His trajectory was all good but it shows, you never know what’s round the corner. Beautiful looking lass, too.

  5. fieldofdrams

I know his father but better friends with his 2 uncles.

Talked in length with his uncle when I was back home last summer and the boy was then undecided as to whether he ever wanted to play again but the family are very tightly knit and rallied around him well.

Good Irish family the O’Briens and all played football locally with me many years ago.

Welsh must come from the Mother’s side.

  6. A CH and a GK expected but no names. We are keen on Hendry but not willing to pay over the odds. We are happy to wait until Summer.

Protecting players – Pep Guardiola on Italian tele – talking functional Italian ( from his time at Brescia / Roma ) -talking about Football needing to do something re protecting football players from assault and injury . That was followed by a film clip of Mane being subjected to a potential leg breaker by a Cardiff player . That was then followed by somebody representing Cardiff saying — This is England – it’s a man’s game here -if he doesn’t like it then go somewhere else . .

*saw that and also the same player in time added on had another sleekit tackle, dearie me and these refs are professionals, however, he may end up demoted for a bit.

BTW after deBruyne’s goal which was very good indeed, the commentators were still enthusing about it late in the game, my first thought was Thommo did the same at Anfield.

Do you know what staggers me, what stuns me and what disappoints me?? The naivety and blind blinkered views and opinions that many many of our supporters have re sevco and their impending demise… It aint gonny happen Ghuys, it aint gonny happen. We talk about the asterisk years.. do you know when the asterisk years stated? 1872, Yep.. day 1.

*beg tae differ there, originally the deid team were non-sectarian and their1st chairman james henderson was a fairly decent man. He was renowned for his work among the poor children of Govan and the club had a notable record of helping charitable causes including Catholic charities. Matches were played for the benefit of the unemployed in 1886 and donations made to help the Unemployed Relief Fund in the Kinning Park area. He also, and the club, had good relations with the fledgling club from the east end and sent a team over there for their inaugural game.

They had several Catholic players but given the demographics of the country then they similar to other Scottish clubs as well as ourselves had more than their fair share of ken dodds, only the hibbees in their early days had a “Catholics only” policy and not just that but they had to have made their Easter Duties before being allowed to play.

One former kinning park player Willie Kivlichan originally from Galasheils, who joined them while studying to be a doctor at Glasgow Uni, after 2 years moved to us but before doing so scored the winning goal against us. He was a practicing Catholic and also a member of the ‘Third Order of St Francis’, and would wear his scapulars beneath his jersey, and no doubt the deidco one as well as his 1st club the doonhammers.

Willie completed his studies whilst playing football and he went on to become a Doctor, he was the police surgeon in Glasgow and also the Celtic Club Doctor and attended to John Thomson on that tragic fateful day in September 1931.

Incidentally, Willie is buried in St Josephs Dumfries and had a Celtic jersey laid on his coffin.

Unfortunately that all ended when james henderson passed away in 1912 and was succeeded by the demagogue primrose-ure who while nearing the end of his 11 year reign tragically lost the 21 year team manager, with a 66% winning record including 8 Championships and 1 Scottish Cup, in the murky waters of the Clyde, and the pledging of the club to the craft while along with the coxswain the emergence of a sectarian policy that has scarred the country ever since.

primrose ure and the new manager now started tae recruit among the ranks of goat shaggin and tangerine ludges, not just players but fans, business associates, tradesmen, clerks, accountants, policemen, judicial officers of the court and most importantly the media who would champion the cause of the new establishment club, quietly in some places but very vocally from the stands and terracing. This quickly allowed them to have amazing success in the League championship.

They did struggle in the one off cup games though which we were more successful in but in a period of 45 years and prior to the return of the Big Mhan we only won 6 more titles as opposed to 16 prior to that, considering we were 15 year younger than them and had, much tae the chagrin of the SFA, initiated the SF, it was all about ABC.

  11. The next two games are huge. I don’t see us letting in a lot of goals over the two games but i worry about where the goals are coming from. If Moussa does start tomorrow night then i hope he has been training hard over the last couple of days and is mentally ready. We could do with a big effort from him. Musonda should be ready to go and will play a part probably from the bench. I hope he is the spark we have been looking for.

Once these two games are out of the way we will have Roberts, Armstrong and Compper back and possibly one or two others like Rogic and Ralston. By then end of February we should be looking pretty formidable. If we can dig in and get the two wins we will be 17 points ahead of the Huns before they line up against Hibs on Saturday.

  12. No Charly yet? Where Celtic is concerned, I am a worrier.

Incidentally, I know, grammatically `Celtic is` is correct but ` Celtic are` always sounds right to me.

    JJ

  13. ABZMIKE,

No less pleasant a walk than the current one across the length and breadth of Kings Links on a wet and windy winter night. ( I had heard that the club were thinking of running shuttle buses from P&R to the new stadium. )

Most people I’ve spoken to from Kingswells/Westhill are in favour of the new stadium – there just seems to be a very vocal group of NIMBY’s who are intent on shouting everyone else down.

And another thing….why have Celtic no announced the signing of Charly Musonda yet ?

    ;-)

At one time, I would have laughed at the idea of him getting elected ….but, sadly, you cant rule anything out these days …I would never have thought his brother would get elected, or that Donald would navigate his way through the machinery… but they did … so, anything is possible.
