Fine-tuning Tommy Burns methods

Almost exactly 10 years after Celtic fans alleged Porto’s adherence to the rules was less than faithful, when they won the Uefa Cup after extra time, their creative genius, Deco, failed a drugs test a substance used to mask performance-enhancing substances were found in his blood.

Is anyone surprised?

Congratulations to the Celtic under-20 team on securing league and cup double, the fourth consecutive season Celtic youths have recorded this achievement.  John Kennedy and Stevie Frail’s operation is years ahead of what was previously known as their domestic competition.

Celtic have been fine-tuning youth development since Tommy Burns returned from Amsterdam all those years ago with new strategies, some of which are still being used.  The cream graduate as Champions League players, but Celtic are pretty much running elite-level youth development in Scotland, a fact made clear when you look at the enormous number of Celtic training academy graduates earning a living across the rest of the league.

It used to be the case that Celtic wasted young talent.  Perceived wisdom was “Go to Aberdeen or Dundee United, they’ll turn you into a player”.  The opposite is now true.

I think one of the reasons we are not seeing young players coming through from youth development is that we are still buying players from other clubs to fill every position. I can’t understand why we hav.e an expensive youth development set-up but still go out and buy young players with potential with a view to selling on at a profit.

More youths would come through if we stopped buying in but would we be as successful as we are at present. If our youths were blooded in the first team and were successful we could sell them on but would we make as big a profit as we will when we sell on Victor and Gary? I think these two policies conspire against one another. Certainly, we are not seeing enough home grown youths coming through.

My thoughts exactly. If there is nothing to hide or if those involved were low-mid profile in their sports the results would be made public and an example made of the guilty. The only logical explanation for me is that there are some very high profile spanish sports stars whose blood has been tested and by releasing these details, the spanish authorities fear a huge scandal.

I don’t see how we can call Celtic’s youth development as ‘elite’ when so few of those who come through the system become first team regulars. I would have thought that after 10 years we would have a half of our first team squad as products of our youth development, as it is on James Forrest in the last couple of years can be said to be a first team player (possibly Charlie Mulgrew as well).

I have no doubt elite youth development is where we are aiming but we seem along way from achieving.

If you put the pieces together from the overall strategy and look long term, things become a bit clearer.

Many were screaming for Jim McGuinness to get involved with the current First Team players but Celtic know it is the youngsters that he needs to work with to make sure we have as many home developed players as possible playing in the Champions League.

The Celtic Board can never be accused of looking at things just short term IMO and it takes a lot of courage to keep that Good ship Celtica rockin n rollin in such turbulent times all around the World.

I’m very excited about the next 5 years in Europe, even if there is no exit from Scottish Football. As Paul67 is saying, Celtic is revitalising Scottish Football, on it’s own, through it’s incredible attention to detail about what is good to take the game forward.

I can only see further expansions by Celtic of their grassroot ventures now that we are starting to see benefits, the monetary benefits from continuous CL participation by Celtic will be enormous to Scottish Football in so many ways both long term and short.

The Huns really harmed Scottish Football with their systematic cheating but Celtic will make Scottish Football Flourish once more, I’m certain of that.

Another thing regarding Celtic’s youth development is that the quality of player in Scotland has gone down over the years but Celtic are more than punching above the curve in terms of developing these players to the highest standards that they can achieve. Not every player who comes through our doors at 10, 13, 16 etc can go on to have a successful career at Celtic but quite a large number do go on to play at a reasonably high standard.

Did Leeds not try that and still got relegated?
