Fit legs and minds puts Celtic clear

122

In yesterday’s blog titled, “Celtic fitness should see them dominate late on”, we discussed the likelihood that the champions “should grow stronger as the game gets into the latter stages”.  Almost as though we knew it would take until around the 78th minute for Celtic to ease ahead.

Aberdeen battled – quite literally – for much of the game and gave evidence as to why they are second top of the table.  Despite their efforts, the game always had a Celtic-win feel to it.

Had the goal not occurred, Brendan Rodgers could easily point to the stormy conditions, which caused havoc for both sides, but you need to be exceptional to score against this Celtic team and you need to be equally exceptional to keep them out.

Aberdeen keeper Ross Doohan, making his second topflight start, was decked in a clash with Kyogo with the game 80 seconds old.  This would have finished lesser players, but Doohan picked himself up and put in a performance Kasper Schmeichel would have been proud of.

Greg Taylor is rightly getting plaudits for his pitched forward ball to Reo Hatate for the goal.  As impressive was this understanding of space Greg showed to be in the right position to make create the chance.

Reo controlled and finished delightfully.  My cheer was initially muted, surely Reo was offside?  Nicky Devlin’s tired mind saw him drop behind the Aberdeen defensive line to play on Reo.  By contract, Cameron Carter-Vickers was immense throughout, surely one of our two world class defenders of the 21st century.

The game came as the CQN community heard we’d lost our pal Setting free the Bears – Tony.  He will be missed terribly.

If you can’t find a bar there jump on the bus to Playa de Mogan, turn left at the bus terminal, stop at the Hyperdino, down the stairs is the Manolos bar. Guy will put the game on for you using one of his many tellies 👍

Last night my brother was the only Celtic fan in and since he’s been there the last five weeks, he put our game on the big screen!

Probably pished off the English 😅🤣😂

Wee Oscar bucket day, a turning point in my life being among the finest humans I have ever met and Quat its best.

After Kyogo’s accidental clash with Doohan, VAR was looking at the incident, as is their remit.

Meantime, as the referee and Kyogo showed concern for the injured keeper while the Dons medics worked on him, the referee was being harassed by Aberdeen players, led by captain Shinnie, who was gesticulating and pointing back upfield, clearly claiming that Kyogo was offside and evidently more concerned about the possibility of conceding a penalty to Celtic than the welfare of his stricken goalkeeper.

Kudos to Kyogo for sticking around to apologise to Doohan once he was back on his feet and cleared to continue, which is more than I can say for Shinnie and his teammates.

Shinnie is a hun shite. Broonie and Callum have handed him his arse so many times. You know that anyway. 😁

  5. Bigrailroadblues,

The last time that I was in Teneriffe, there was a Celtic bar in Los Cristianos. It was up the hill and turn right at the roundabout. Very busy with Celtic supporters.

    Hope this helps.

    Very likely!

    Congratulations on the anniversary!

Definitely catch Celtic games in Gran Canaria. Last time there, about 2 years ago in St Augustin, saw a couple of games just up the road towards Maspalomas (can’t remember the name). HH

  8. BRRB:

It’s maybe worth taking out a month’s sub to CTV (£14.99) so you can watch it online, as long as it’s not a CL game. I normally go to Las Palmas where there is a lack of Celtic bars but watch the games on my tablet.

  9. Haven’t posted on here in many years and rarely even lurk these days but the sad news of Tony’s sudden death reached me through the ever remarkable Celtic grapevine.

Tony Gillespie – Setting Free The Bears – Requiescat In Pace

Tony was one of the first people I routinely interacted with on CQN right from close to the start of the blog. He was intelligent, funny, and scrupulously fair-minded. It was a pleasure to eventually meet with him, along with many others, face-to-face. He didn’t disappoint.

I think it was a Saturday back in March this year when I last saw him. He and a crowd of CQNers (past and present) had dropped into Babbity Bowster’s before the game that day. He was the same as ever, always interesting and interested. Great company to be in.

My heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with his family, and his many friends at this sad and difficult time.

    Hail, hail! Tony

    congratulations on your anniversary- enjoy

It’s our 50th anniversary next year and we’re going to Gran Canaria at the end of April.

  11. Like others cannot believe the sad news about SFTB, I was only in the Shipbank for a few hours on Friday and he was in great form and I had a wee conservation with Tony about obviously Celtic and my daughter now being Celtic daft as he remembered things I had posted years ago when she wasn’t into any football

A total gent and I hope the posts on here regarding Tony give the family a wee bit of comfort, still can’t believe it 🙏🏻

  12. After last night, my appreciation of Aberdeen has nose-dived. I wasn’t overly impressed with them in the 2 earlier games this season but I didn’t feel they were a team of hackers. That they were last night. Shinnie, in particular, is a disgrace.

  13. Subterranean- even under these very sad circumstances it is good to hear from you. Lovely memories of you, Tony and members of the CQN old guard in the Babbity back in the day. Shared some words with Cadizzy this morning.

  14. That really shocked me at the end. Feels like 5 minutes since he retired and was playing 5s only a few years ago.

Happy to have met him and shared pints in Babbity’s with my faither and Auldheid too; plus the first Hoot as well. Very clever and friendly guy

    RIP SFTB

    Hail Hail

  15. Good evening guys just logged on to say how sad and shocked I am at the sudden passing of Tony Bhoy.

I was speaking to Adi Dassler this morning who told me and this is the 1st chance I have had to log in.

May Tony rest in peace and may our Lord look after his family at this very difficult time.

f you speak to Cadizzy again, give him my best regards……and see if you can get him posting again.

  17. The returnof weeron on

This makes guy not meet with much agreement, however….

When opposing players are trying to get to the ball, and end up colliding, it is usually the one who DOESNT get the ball first is the one penalized.

My first thought, given the ball flew behind the keeper, was that Kyogo got there first, so I was wanting a penalty.

Then the rerun was shown. The keeper got there 1st, then Kyogo got there late. I was surprised that Kyogo didn’t get a card, possibly red.

I think that many Celtic supporters would be in agreement, had this happened to OUR keeper.

    Cheers, Weeron

  18. The terrible conditions last night made the match a hard watch until Brendan introduced the squad players. Football is now a 16 man game and almost immediately the newcomers breathed new life into the contest. The Aberdeen goalie had to make a spectacular save to stop a goalbound header from Idah then GT set up Reo for a terrific score.. Jamsey and young McCowan were adding to Aberdeen’s woes. The reds did have chances but failed to take them.

  19. JinkyRedStar – Yes my grapevine involved Cadizzy and you.

    Hope you are well.

  20. boondock saint on

I thought we tried to play some good stuff in such crappy conditions last night. Shinnie and that #6 could easily have been sent off last night. What a terrific pass by wee Greg to Reo and what a finish. As someone mentioned earlier, I too have lost my soft spot for the Dandy’s due to them being a bunch of mothercluggers every time they play us.

As mentioned yesterday, God Bless to SFTB and his family and all of his friends. 68 is far too young for someone, and I hope that we all take care of ourselves no matter our age. I go in for my 2nd hip replacement in 2 weeks and hope that after this I might have some degree of my old comfort back in my life.

CQN is a wonderful place, despite the disagreements that we see at times.

    Take good care everyone.

  21. Catching up on the rangers agm, och it is just a distraction to fill in some moements, but i missed this from last years,

even their eco warriors are bigots, what is going on in this poor fellas heid.

i am reminded of chewing the fats “mon the fishes” protester.

Last year was a bizarre one

Quite often these meetings aren’t as stormy as you expect – and last year was a case in point.

Easily the most madcap moment was when one fan, armed with data, demanded to know the club’s net zero strategy (never mind the zero trophies won the previous season!).

A steward tried remove him, amid groans from the audience, former chairman John Bennett insisted on answering the question and said he was aware of carbon footprint and the importance of it as he pointed out the club’s commitment to green targets. The climate activist continued rambling as was marched out before yelling “No Surrender” as he made his way out of the door.

  22. ha the bold gilligan, feeding them those soundbites,

i think he really meant –

Rangers then are not rangers now, rangers are gone forever.

    ———————-

Gilligan’s closing statement as he confirms he’ll be standing down soon.

“It’s been a joy, been a thrill. Delighted with appointment of Patrick Stewart. We’re pretty close to new chairman. Will be announced in few weeks. All I can say is thank you to supporters. It’s Rangers then, Rangers now, Rangers forever.”

  23. Could I add to the sentiments about SFTB-

    A constant, a communicator and a celt.

It’s not that the blog will be lesser without him it’s that it will never be the same again. We’ve all consciously or otherwise looked out for what SFTB had to say about the myriad of topics which are important to us. He’d unerringly put us right!

  24. someone at Rangers Media, finally seeing what I predicted for Ted McMinn house

If NEH profit is £500k on average every year it will take 24 years to pay it off.

By then it’ll probably be unfit for purpose and torn down for something else.
