Fit legs and minds puts Celtic clear

122

In yesterday’s blog titled, “Celtic fitness should see them dominate late on”, we discussed the likelihood that the champions “should grow stronger as the game gets into the latter stages”.  Almost as though we knew it would take until around the 78th minute for Celtic to ease ahead.

Aberdeen battled – quite literally – for much of the game and gave evidence as to why they are second top of the table.  Despite their efforts, the game always had a Celtic-win feel to it.

Had the goal not occurred, Brendan Rodgers could easily point to the stormy conditions, which caused havoc for both sides, but you need to be exceptional to score against this Celtic team and you need to be equally exceptional to keep them out.

Aberdeen keeper Ross Doohan, making his second topflight start, was decked in a clash with Kyogo with the game 80 seconds old.  This would have finished lesser players, but Doohan picked himself up and put in a performance Kasper Schmeichel would have been proud of.

Greg Taylor is rightly getting plaudits for his pitched forward ball to Reo Hatate for the goal.  As impressive was this understanding of space Greg showed to be in the right position to make create the chance.

Reo controlled and finished delightfully.  My cheer was initially muted, surely Reo was offside?  Nicky Devlin’s tired mind saw him drop behind the Aberdeen defensive line to play on Reo.  By contract, Cameron Carter-Vickers was immense throughout, surely one of our two world class defenders of the 21st century.

The game came as the CQN community heard we’d lost our pal Setting free the Bears – Tony.  He will be missed terribly.

From much earlier. The Sheephaven Arms isnt in the West End but its a very short walk from Mornington Crescent station so no far at all and its a Celtic Pub and a great place to watch the Celts on European nights.

reading their blogs 2 things that still suprise me.

they have absolutely no one who can read a set of accounts, they are collectively thick

it is noted they traded 5 players out and received only 880k

but they needed someone at the top table to actually say it to them.

next 1500 shareholders turned up. after losing your original shareholding, your debenture seat, and your grandas nameplate, what on earth were they thinking in buying shares in the new club.

If it’s Puerto Rico in Gran Canaria you’re going to Dicey Reilly’s is the place to watch the Hoops 😎☘

  5. I mentioned earlier about being in Tony’s primary school class 1962-67.

There weren’t as many countries in the world then as there are today. I thought I was doing well, knowing maybe 80% of the capital cities. Tony knew every one….at the age of ten or 11. He is one of the two or three most intelligent people I’ve known personally.

He was also the warmest, friendliest and most engaging guy you could wish to meet.

    CQN has lost a star.

  6. Big Matt having a nightmare for Brighton.Hardly got a kick,no idea what position he is supposed to be playing, then scores an OG around the 70 odd minute mark, and hooked straight away.

  7. Spurs absolutely abysmal tonight.Portsmouth should have scored 5 or 6.Playing like that,Huns could gub them next week.Ange could be in trouble if they do.Really dire.

Only gave it 30 first half minutes then turned it off, I was so bored I thought I was watching Bournemouth 👀 🤣😂

  9. Prestonpans,

    Portsmouth ?????????

    😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Even they would have beat them.

  10. Bada,

Yep,could be right.I was worried he would put a reserve team out next week, but I think he has to win that game. They have Chelsea after them.

    Big problems.Needs results.

Really sad news about SFTB; he always came across as very insightful, decent and intelligent in a humble often humorous way and his kind and generous nature always shone through. The blog will be all the poorer for his passing.

RIP Tony, you’ll be much missed and may perpetual light shine upon you.

  14. BRRB …we should all have a toast to SFTB on the 20th as our gathering will be the lesser without him 🙏

  15. Good morning all from a 6 degree, but quite chilly, dry at the moment Garngad.

Tony Gillespie – Requiescat In Pace

    Best man falls.

The essence of the CQN community he helped create a Blogger that set a high benchmark for more than twenty years. Something good to say if not, don’t bother kind of summed him up, no gloating, just joy in ambling up in Parkhead on a match day, where his resolve will remain.

Privileged to have shared his company through CQN, watched Celtic by his side benefited from his intellect, encyclopedic knowledge and understanding of our club. A champion of Celtic and the greater Celtic cause, a prolific Blogger a meticulous debater with few equals, a Celtic font that led by example and looked up, not down to all he met.

He maintained a love for Celtic, like that proud wee bhoy from Castlemilk that he was “ Who was that Celtic guy, you introduced us to, we asked – The Battered Bunnet? “ He replied with a rueful smile “ That was Setting free the Bears, I thought you knew him “

    I’m glad that we did.

My thoughts and prayers are with Shirley, and all of the family .

  23. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    Re: Ange and Spurs

… with no evidence whatsoever to back this up … I suspect last night’s “fan confrontation” is Ange intentionally drawing heat to him personally to keep it away from the players.

If so, I’m not sure it is good management but it is certainly strong leadership.

The current EPL league table is interesting.

Nine clubs across 5th to 13th are separated by just four points.

    (Spurs are 10th)

Check out the goal difference for this cluster.

    Spurs are the outlier.

They win well and lose narrowly.

Theoretically, losing narrowly is an easier problem to resolve than losing heavily.

PS – is it any wonder football managers don’t like the media?

Check out the BBC Online article about the fan confrontation.

Assorted talking heads, has beens, never have beens spouting ignorant nonsense about where the man in the arena has failed.

    Old Theodore was bang on.

  24. I think Ange is trying to challenge the mentality at Spurs. I don’t think he’ll do it, Spurs fans are strangely proud of their status as perennial losers it’s so deep in the clubs DNA that a serial winner like Conte could only finish 4th and 5th with them (5 titles in 8 seasons with 3 clubs and now sitting top of serie a agsin with a team that finished tenth last season). Better managers than him have failed there, and they will again.

He constantly puts his neck on the block to challenge it, if he can change it it would be a bigger achievement than anything he’s done before. But the fans are turning on him, they’ll take comfort from feeling sorry for themselves, try and chase him out and Levy will, eventually sack him.

Wading through the adverts to post my condolences and to mark my appreciation of Tony; a genuinely

excellent CQNer, one of the bhoys of the Old Brigade, a man who has forgotten more about Celtic than I have

Rest in peace, Tony, and may your family find comfort in knowing the high esteem, admiration and affection
