Fit & proper waste of time

The proposed SFA rule change, that clubs must conduct an investigation into prospective new owners, went through unopposed at the Association’s AGM, currently underway at Hampden.  No formal rules must be observed during this investigation, not even the ‘Gandhi criminal rule’ postulated by (still) SPL chief executive, Neil Doncaster, so a club can look into the matter as deeply as they see appropriate and the former owner can claim he was “duped” after the money appears in his bank account.

This does not strengthen efforts to keep unfit people from owning Scottish clubs, if anything, it provides errant clubs with a defence.  Previously it was explicitly the club’s responsibility to ensure owners were fit and proper, now the club’s responsibility is limited to carrying out an unspecified value judgement.  Tune in soon to hear “We carried out an investigation consistent with best practice, why punish us?”

In this instance, value judgements are worth as much as Ibrox valuations. It’s not the rules that are wrong, the only problem is one club didn’t respect the rules and doesn’t like the medicine.

No mention yet of the dark Fifa cloud hanging over the Association. Perhaps it’s slipped their mind.

Rodagal is 1.80346843m tall [approx.] He broke the Wigan scoring record previously held by Hoops legned Henri Camara.

He had Gary Caldwell on speed dial, and would often call him at all times of the day and night with questions about Celtic, until a judge slapped on an injunction.

  2. Wonkyradar,

Thanks for the good post. Nice to see thoughts on footie now and then.

I’m going to contend that our ‘good’ coaching record is actually the problem. Over the last 30 years our unders teams have often out-performed our senior team, and since we last qualified for a major tournament the u-21’s have had several good campaigns.

Basically our coaches have provided a template to win games which is significantly more effective when you’re playing younger, less experienced, less physically able players. At that level a good coach can bridge the technical gulf with tactics and motivation far more effectively than would be the case with the senior players. Generally Scottish coaches have shown that when it comes to finding a winning formula we’re as good as any in the world, if not better.

That’s the coach/managers job and we’re very good at it. At senior level it’s entirely appropriate to forget style and ‘good’ football to achieve results, but at the youth levels it really isn’t. We gain absolutely nothing from being tactically astute and/or determined to succeed at u21s. So a backs to the wall draw with the dutch looks far better on paper than it does on the park, and if the only thing that stopped the 1-1 turning into 5-1 to them is our tactics and will, then we know that more often than not that shortfall is quickly made up at senior levels.

I’m not saying we don’t want good coaches at youth level, but from the very earliest levels the emphasis results hides our failings. Yeah, I know tell us something we don’t know. However, I think it answers your point about the relative success of our unders teams. Frankly if i never heard another u18 or u21 score again I don’t think it would bother me… long weary of the extremely false hope their results have offered.

The Celtic school(s) intiative, that was written about this week is hugely exciting and encouraging. We are on the right track and Celtic, inevitably, are leading the way.

Nice to see genuine stars like Jedward carrying the Olympic torch through the streets of Dublin- are the Bilderberg Group employing satirists to write these scripts?

  4. If I was unable to pay my mortgage and went back to the bank pleading poverty, then the bank take pity on me and agree to reduce my debt, then book myself a wee holiday overseas, what do you think the bank would do when they found out?

Or is this all just another ruse from RFCia to create the illusion of ‘normality’ returning to the club.

But wait, are WE jumping to conclusions. Maybe it’s not the team going to Germany, just D&P staff on their well deserved hols.

For the moment we can ignore the “fit” and “proper” tests as Mr Green is refusing to disclose his backers at all.

At this point they fail the “person” part of the test!

The Celtic schools initiative is something we should have being doing a long time ago- the likes of Ajax & Auxerre adopted this system many moons ago. Great to see us trailblazing on our modest wee patch of the world. Kids also need social/educational support to succeed. I know I had all the talent in the world ( as did many others I played alongside) but living in Castlemilk surrounded by drugs, gangs & other temptations makes it difficult without a “buffer”.

Skill is paramount when kids are first developing. In Argentina its all ‘softball’ five-a-side they play with emphasis on skill, creativity, craft & control over “adult” concerns like winning. Winning can come later. First we have to develop skill. But then maybe all this gnashing of teeth is academic: five or ten years from now we could be in a golden age of Scottish football.

  9. Rangers are to go ahead with plans to rebrand the club, including changing the kit from blue to green and introducing a new badge.

The changes are part of a “major and significant” investment pledge from rangers mystery owners.

They believe that the change of colour will expand the club’s appeal in “international markets”.

“We are only too aware that the change of colour is a radical move,” said Green.

The decision to implement the rebranding proposal was taken during drinking session between Green and Duff&Duffer on Tuesday.

rangers released a statement confirming that investors (All Five of them) have pledged their commitment to the club.

As well as wearing green rather than blue home shirts from next season – for the first time since…. Ever! – the SPL club say they will now look into expanding ibrox stadium and upgrading the club’s training facilities.

The change of colour is a radical and some would say revolutionary move which will be met with unease and apprehension by a number of supporters, along with being seen as controversial by many,” said Green

“To those I would like to say that this was not a decision that has been taken lightly or without a great deal of thought and debate. I mean, we were on to our second bottle of Vodka before I came up with the idea.”

“There is no getting away from the fact that history and traditions are the lifeblood of any club and as such should be jealously guarded and preserved.

“Both the board and our investors fully understand that rangers are gubbed and so toxic no-one will want anything to do with them again and in light of this we will do our utmost to ditch all the baggage.”

Green said the driving forced behind the move was to put Fifa off the scent, allowing them to play some kind of football next season.

“By securing this investment we can safeguard the immediate and long-term future of this club,” he added.

“The changes to the home kit and badge introduced as a consequence of the investment package are designed to help the club to develop its brand and to allow it to expand its appeal to as wide an audience as possible, with a view to delivering local success via an international and diverse market.”

My impression is that we coach our unders sides to be successful at their given level, whereas other countries coach their unders to produce good senior players with little consideration to the U21/17 results.

I actually think the same is true of Celtic – the purpose of our youth team should be to produce good first team players, not to win the youth leagues every year.

It’s actually entrepreneurial genius on Cardiff’s part.

Change the colour of the home kit and thousands more will buy season tickets, while the existing supporters express their joy at the idea.

Simples. I only recall a similar example of such a high level of football intelligence coming from those geniuses across the river.

  16. Wonkyradar,

Agreed, I saw so many talented kids not making the breakthrough for various reasons, like those you suggest, whilst a lot of capable and deserving athletes got the chances who clearly weren’t good enough technically. Fair play to them, but the evidence of an athlete first policy is there for all to see in our often ugly SPL. Makes the game difficult and a coaching challenge, but, offers nothing when we get to the top level and the truly great teams and players can match the ability and the athleticism. Surely, though, it’s easier to teach/train athleticism than technique.

I suspect we have turned a corner, albeit with a few obvious and no doubt less obvious challenges ahead.

Apparently the Irish OA asked the British OA if they would allow the torch to go to Dublin and the British OA said “no problem, happy to do it to given the close bonds between us”.

Regardless of opinion on the whole Olympic thing, pretty decent they agreed to it IMO.

Any meeja monkies taking photographs of the masonic finger tickling at today’s gatherin at Hampden lodge??

  20. Just read the new rule that clubs should conduct investigations into new owners. Typical of the SFA to have drafted an article that will be impossible to adhere to. I presume what they meant to say is “majority owner” or “controlling interest” but they didn’t and by saying just owner that means that shareholders as owners of the club will also now be subject to this new rule.

Say for example if this was in place when Fergus McCann was selling the club to the fans, he would have had to carry out an investigation on everyone who declared an interest in purchasing shares.

Stupid SFA. What they also should have said is that directors should be fit and proper.

Oh and before anyone says that “we know what they mean and to stop being pedantic”, it is the poor wording of articles that have got them into bother in the past.

Does anyone with any sense work at the SFA?

If Ragers can take the SFA to court and get away ‘Scot’ free then why don’t we and charge them with being unfit to run Scottish Football. I’m sure we would have a stack of evidence to wipe the floor with them. Lets just get this Circus shut down and reformed as a proper Association.

I wonder if they got any reassurances?

  31. Forcing a seller of a football club to assess the suitability of prospective purchasers is a nonsense. Imagine the (albeit extreme) example where one purchaser has a solid gold background offering £10M, and another perhaps foreign and unknown purchaser offering £30M – How is the seller supposed to come to an impartial decision? All they want to do is sell to the highest bidder.

Assessing the suitability of a set of office bearers for a club should be the responsibility of the national association, not of an organisation looking to get out of club ownership.
