Fit & proper waste of time

760

The proposed SFA rule change, that clubs must conduct an investigation into prospective new owners, went through unopposed at the Association’s AGM, currently underway at Hampden.  No formal rules must be observed during this investigation, not even the ‘Gandhi criminal rule’ postulated by (still) SPL chief executive, Neil Doncaster, so a club can look into the matter as deeply as they see appropriate and the former owner can claim he was “duped” after the money appears in his bank account.

This does not strengthen efforts to keep unfit people from owning Scottish clubs, if anything, it provides errant clubs with a defence.  Previously it was explicitly the club’s responsibility to ensure owners were fit and proper, now the club’s responsibility is limited to carrying out an unspecified value judgement.  Tune in soon to hear “We carried out an investigation consistent with best practice, why punish us?”

In this instance, value judgements are worth as much as Ibrox valuations. It’s not the rules that are wrong, the only problem is one club didn’t respect the rules and doesn’t like the medicine.

No mention yet of the dark Fifa cloud hanging over the Association. Perhaps it’s slipped their mind.

    Netherlands 1 – 2 Scotland

    29 February 2012

    Scotland 0 – 0 Netherlands

    31 May 2011

Bulgaria 2 – 2 Scotland ( Bulgaria scored 3 mins into injury time).

How can we produce such decent results at this level then when these same guys get to the full international level they become seasoned exponents of mediocrity? Do imposters of the Levein ilk have specially made taps that extracts all the creative sap from these kids? Is poor coaching to blame? Why are guys like John Collins ( probably our most accomplished player of the last twenty years) not at the very forefront of coaching in this country?

Coaching is important: Only 2,769 English coaches hold Uefa’s B, A and Pro badges

    • Spain has 23,995, Italy 29,420 and Germany 34,790. Spain has the highest concentration of coaches of any European nation.

God knows how many we have: 3.5 coaches and a collie dug. But then we’ve goat Largs.

    ———

The reason we do so well at a younger international level is down to the fact our players are taught from far too young an age to be too tactical. Our under-17 teams are physically strong and well drilled to be competitive in the competitions they take part in. BUT This is useless

We need to teach our players from a very young age to enjoy playing the game. I remember playing as a left back up until about under 16s (I’m now 23). Every time I received the ball I was greeted by cheers of ‘get rid of it’. Similarly any time we faced a skilful opponent who wanted to play anything that resembled nice attacking football the instruction was to ‘hit him’ or ‘show him he’s in a match’. Even shouts of break his legs from disgruntled parents. I actually heard this shouted by a grown man at an under-13s game recently. We need to take pressure off of our youngsters. Allow them to express themselves. Encourage possession of the ball. Our whole philosophy is wrong.

People might point to players like Aiden and young James but examples of this will always exist. Some people are just born with the talent. George Best grew up playing on a cobbled street, as did Jimmy Johnston.

Competing at under 17s and under 21s is not a guarantee that the players can make the step up

I’m in the process of completing SFA level 4 youth coaching badge. Level 5 is the final level and provides access to Pro badge.

I’ve got a lot out of SFA stuff but I don’t swallow their philosophy hook line and sinker like many non football people who seem to take the courses. By non football people I mean folk who have never played or been involved until their kid takes an interest…

I think this is a problem as these folk then apply learning without common sense leading to ‘instruction book’ coaching.

I coach 2 nights a week and take games on Saturday and Sunday.

The more I see it the more I think kids can be ‘over coached’ and it can never replace ‘street football’.

As a kid I played night and day and while I’d say my players are technically better than I was at their age due to coaching input I wonder if they have the innate appetite for football folk of my generation had.

Too many distractions / alternatives and too much tree hugging control over their developments stifles their raw instincts to push themselves another problem.

I was with you post until your roomed John Collins… Deary me.

I personally hate players who are so focused on technique they forget that the objective is to win and consequently have a muted impact.

They should be put in a room with freestyle keepie up kings!

Is FIFA looking for SFA extinction or not wanting involved. My guess is on the latter and is based on a lifetime of experience.

  27. AEK, 11-time national champions, were sanctioned by UEFA for running up debts way beyond their means to repay.

“It is a black page in the history of AEK,” club President Andreas Dimitrelos told a press conference following UEFA’s decision that relates to its club licensing system rather than financial fair play regulations which are about losses rather than debt.

“We have a debt of €35 million (£23 million/$43.5 million) and €23 million (£18.5 million/$28.5 million) of this is owed to the state,” said Dimitrelos.

Asteras Tripolis will take Aek’s place in European action in 2012-2013.

In all, six Greek Super League clubs have been found guilty of falling foul of UEFA’s club licensing system.

The six – AEK, Aris, Panionios, PAS Giannina, Corfu and OFI Crete – retain their top-flight status but they will not be allowed to sign any new players except for under 22-year-old Greek players

  28. So if the Uefa/Greek FA can sanction six clubs and order them to only sign Greek U22 players.

What are rangers in court moaning about?

  29. IamNFL:

I completely agree with everything you say- particularly the sentiment behind your post. The whole “claw hammer captain caveman” approach we have in West of Scotland specifically, and in UK in general, towards every aspect of life, has been transposed most visibly into our football style. Finesse, creativity, flamboyance, charisma, even genius are not cultivated, encouraged or developed in such an overtly machismo culture of brute over brain. The kind of summary brutality dished out to better players in grass roots football is symptomatic of that culture. The authorities have to emphasise to refs that creative players need protection & a radical overhaul of our paleolithic mindset is essential.

    PS

I think “controlled aggression” is an important part of our natural character- just like it is for the Germans to a lesser extent- it can, harnessed with discipline, be an advantage. During the 60/70s golden age of Scottish football when we had more skillful players that extra edge of directed aggression went a long way to our collective success.

  30. UEFA president Michel Platini confirmed the rule preventing players from leaving the field without the referee’s permission would stand – even if they are the victims of racism from the stands in Poland and Ukraine.

Mario Balotelli last week threatened to walk off if he suffered racist abuse during Italy’s Euro 2012 games, but Platini said the Manchester City striker would be punished for doing so unless the officials stopped the game.

“It’s a yellow card,” Platini said at the tournament’s kick-off press conference in Warsaw, which was completely dominated by the issue of racism.

“We’d certainly support the referee if he decided to stop the game.

“It’s not a player, Mr Balotelli, who’s in charge of refereeing. It’s the referee who takes these decisions.

“So, the referee has been given advice and he can stop the game if there are problems.

“We will stop the game if there are problems because I think racism is the worst of this.”
