Fit squad needed as Valencia return to top half of table

184

When we stopped for the winter break, I hoped to have Kieran Tierney, Tom Rogic and Odsonne Edouard available for the resumption of league duty tomorrow evening.  Tom remains at the Asian Cup with Australia, where he will face the UAE on Friday, but doubt remains over when we will see Kieran and Odsonne fully fit.  The latter is thought to be over his injury and just needs sharpness, but we had a false dawn on his fitness a month ago.

There are only three weeks before Valencia arrive in Glasgow (game sold out this morning).  The Spaniards have hit form since drawing Celtic in the Europa League and are now only six points off a European spot for next season.

Now in the top half of the table, having dispensed with relegation worries.  Progress against Celtic will be their objective for February.  A place in the last 16 is achievable, but we will need all resources available.

You have jumped the shark with all your “North Curve” nonsense.

However thanks for the feedback — I only see the two egotists with the load hailers and hear the two mentalists on the drums.

It is all about as Glasgow as chicken tikka …

I too find those songs offensive. I’m also one of the few within the ole Standing Section that doesn’t go along with the choreographed, crouching, arms aloft, “here we go, 10 in a row” although my refusal to do so has resulted in me being on the wrong end of a rather violent clip round the ear! Next time I see that guy…..

    Touchy, touchy …

Hopefully you were out this afternoon getting your SnS tattoo removed.

Or — more likely — you were getting a matching Contra tattoo.

  4. Tomorrow I will go out early, probably go into a few Celtic boozers and enjoy the songs ( Celtic and Rebel variety ) before the game. This is my choice and if I don’t want to listen to such songs i should go elsewhere.

With such a diverse crowd @ Parkhead representing society in 2019 , from all political opinions, cultures, faiths, atheism etc etc we should all participate in what unites us and cannot cause division. Ie Celtic songs and Celtic support.

Stolen from facebook, is the songs we sing get up the noses of Airdrie, Rangers, Hearts, the SDL, the EDL, various right wing English hooligan mobs and Brexiteers, then we must be doing something right.

Given the people you wish to wind up …

Please note that this is not a competition to see who can cause the most offence because if you stoop to their levels you will lose the people surrounding you and then they will always find something worse.

TFOD2.1 mentalists — It is in their DNA, they are world class.

Pol Pot, OBL, Vlad the Impaler, Franco — they doff their cap to their imagination and lack of humanity.

Better to bring joy to the confrontation with the full crowd behind you than try to out shock them and the watching audience. You are just following their agenda and you will never win.

Our aim is always to come out a Transfer Window WITH A STRONGER BANK BALANCE than we went in…..’

    Fixed that for you mate!

I have a ST (not on HCTS) I haven’t parted with a penny since attending the AEK game and now won’t under any circumstances this season. I’ll consider spending again when I see a reasonable amount of our £50m being invested in strengthening the team.

I’m not holding my breath here.

I haven’t been to Celtic Park for over a year but can’t recall the GB indulging in sectarian singing when I did attend. I remember in their early days they actively discouraged some of the sectarian add ones such as “soon there’ll be no Protestants at all”.

ANy examples of these, a genuine question not out to cause a rammy.

You are so right . It’s a complex matter and EVERYTHING is channelled through that bit between the players ears. The player has not been born who is immune from the vibes coming from the stands.

i do find their montage on youtube quite offensive. took a while to find it, but someone has taken the time to capture the worst of them,

who picks these songs. the milatarism, the plooks, the aggresive crowding. the add on “oh ahs” ,

the outfit of “the conductor”, all black, sinister, just missing a balaclava. the group of kids with the co-ordinated haka like line dance look like saint stephens prefects all wearing the same clothes.

old men in beards standing up , clearly joining in the chants, the evidence is all there.

sanitize the green brigade for our childrens sake.

its a must watch, all eight and a half minutes, if you jin in at any point you need to take a good look at yirselfs.

  11. Am not a fan of our current songbook particularly at away games and not sure why as Celtic fans we need to sing “in memory of the ten” and such like. Diverse background socially and politically at Celtic so understand the wide range of views and opinions but I think our balance is now more towards the offensive or could be offensive category.

Roy had a stormer that day but, for me, his best game was 4.2 v Rangers, ten men won the league game, in May 1979.

    He was magnificent that evening.

the outfit of “the conductor”, all black, sinister,

When the Columbine massacre occurred the press were all over the fact that the FBI had discovered that the two teenage perpetrators wardrobes were exclusively full of black clothing.

They already hate the wearing of the green.

How long before they go after black with the exception of socks with a red top?

  14. You are taking one hell of a game Peter Lawwell.

I’ve never seen a club stick more rigidly to a specific signing policy before.

This sign players cheap, develop them and try to sell them on at a profit – not when the club is on the verge of making history ffs.

It’s got to be bonus related, there is no other explanation for this frugality.

No bonus next season if we don’t win the league again, and the club doesn’t get to the CL for 2 seasons in a row – and we would have made the group stages this season if it wasn’t for the rubbish summer transfers, or lack of signing. Sorry forgot, he did get his record bonus, even though we didn’t qualify for the CL – rewarding failure and incompetence? Couldn’t wait to sell Dembele.

    Project, project, project…

How about project gtf damn dinosaurs.

  15. tontine

how about paul brown and otto graham, i think you will find ottos record better than bradys.

  16. And in the eighties we sang unsavoury songs such as ” I’d rather wear a turban than a sash” . I’d rather be a Da@@Ie than a hun. Totally unacceptable then, and totally unacceptable now.

I was in the jungle at the Celtic v Rangers game in 1988, The Mark Walters game. It proved to be a watershed, and such scenes never happened again on mass.

We are more educated and enlightened now, but the fact remains that just because we sang certain songs in the past dosent justify singing them now.

To summarise: if it is offensive to some in our support,;We cannot vindicate what we do now, because of what happened in the past.

PS: To clarify, I am not comparing rebel songs to racist chants, just giving a factual illustration..

  17. I would like to see new faces at celtic . I would like to see new faces for the positions we sorely need them . Not for the sake of spending money .. we have a challenge on our hands here , by an outfit who should not be anywhere near to challenge us . We have needed a right back for a wee while now , everyone could see Mikel was getting caught out . We have needed cover for our super kid for ages ,common sense tells you KT was going to get injured at some stage . We need new faces at ch because everyone and there granny knows Big Dedryk was going to leave , we also are aware Leicester can call there boy back at anytime , we need new faces for all those positions . And my personal want , we need new faces to fill the void in midfield , a void that requires a men of steel , ball winners tough guys , an enforcer to HELP. Or REPLACE our super captain , who will go at some point , look no farther than Saturday when the Airdrie goalie had a go at Emilio ,hs was the only hooped jersey who got into the fray AS USUAL , and that for me is our teams main fault , we’re too soft .

  18. I cant see derogatory chants about orange bar stewards is sectarian . Orange order IS sectarian and I wouldn’t call it a religion so and slagging them off doesn’t seem like a crime to me.

  19. Hmmmm.

Just what was that SDL/EDL burroo barnacle grouping doing at Celtic park,Chelsea insignia easily on view,

    Not a word

  20. Jobo you won’t see that auld git till Saturday. He’s been laid up for the past 4 days and has been “advised” by his wife that it wouldn’t be sensible to go tomorrow night.

He’s apt to take such “advice” as after many, many years of marriage he knows the repercussions of not doing so!

  21. Fool Time Whistle on

We have those who moan because we get loanees in, then we get others moaning because we buy instead of loaning like Compper, then we have others who want us to give youth a chance.

Inevitably for brining players in it boils down to:-

Do they/can they play in a position that is on our required list?

Are they of the required standard?

Does the manager actually want him for his system of play?

What is their history of injuries AND recovery?

    Is their lifestyle acceptable?

How many other clubs have they played for & for how long?

What were any “issues” at previous clubs?

What is their discipline record like?

Do they have a settled personal life?

Are they willing to come to Celtic?

    Can we afford the fee?

    Can we afford the wages?

    What age are they?

What might be the sell on value particularly vis a vis age & fee?

What are the players personal ambitions about what league he would ultimately like to play?

There will be more questions that any real due diligence would require, but already you can see why loanees are so attractive to clubs like Celtic. They can have many of the benefits with a lot less of the risk.

Jamabhoy’s Google business model post is not far off the mark, IMHO.

The only add on to that business model is of course when we buy younger players who are borderline tier one/two players that we can get in with a promise of a move to the EPL etc if a transfer threshold is met.

For anyone who wants the club to spend real money & buy a player(s) in this window…

    Who would you suggest?

Would they realistically be prepared to come to Celtic?

There is a chant that uses the rhythm of “Celtic, Celtic” and replaces it with “Orange, Bastards” and it resonates right round the ground. Also “build a bonfire, build a bonfire, put the Jambos on the top …….”. Also the Cheer up sleepy Jean tune of “Cheer up Stevie G/ Craig Levein/ Derek McInnes etc.”

All of which are very, very poor.

I’d like to think your list of questions would be applied to everyone we sign. And we get pass marks on almost everything.

I do wonder though if we also look to bring in players who will help the existing squad stay settled and settle in quickly too.

When Dembele left I think it had a big impact on the young French boys. We may have been swayed to sign a player with a French connection to help the lads at a personal level outside of work.

It could also indicate that we’ll stick to certain markets to ensure new players settle quickly.
