Fitness gambles can backfire

734

News that Kris Commons had surgery yesterday on a back injury he’s been carrying for months was news to me. Injury and illness hampered Kris at various stages this (last?) season but when he reported back ‘fit’ his form didn’t hit previous heights. Now we know why.

Commons, Scott Brown and Mikael Lustig played through injury for large portions of the season. They are big players for Celtic and the story of our season can be seen through the prism of their situations. Jozo Simunovic was also less than 100% fit for what little we saw of him.

Correctly diagnosing the fitness of each of them will be important to Celtic’s performance next season. If we think Jozo and Scott will be capable of performing at Champions League level and they’re not, you could write the script on how next season will transpire.

The new manager will take a look at Kris’s age, vitals and recent injury record, and will immediately underestimate what he’s likely to get from the player next season. No new manager will rely on having a fit and able Kris Commons, but if fit, he’ll get a player with the craft to help him in Europe and domestically.

Mikael’s persistent hip injuries suggest we need to recruit a right back. There’s insufficient evidence to determine whether Saidy Janko is ready for the task, so we need to find someone who can take the pressure off Mikael’s hips.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to the newspaper advertisement about Resolution 12, which will run in The Guardian and a Swiss business ‘paper.  It’s been a remarkable project. You can read more information here.

  6. My boy’s pal was an unused sub last Wednesday night for St Johnstone. He was saying after the game that the chat in the St Johnstone dressing room was that Tom Rogic is clearly Celtic’s best player. They think he is “different class” to the rest.

    As others see us.

  7. Cultsbhoy

Get Rogic out of that section please :)

The bhoy is a star and a keeper in a midfield with Roberts, Armstrong and McGregor.

That anchoring duo of Brown and Bitton needs broken up – I’d play Nir further forward actually and prioritise a sitting middy in the Victor mould.

I’d use Brown sparingly. I like him but Sunday showed we can be so much more fluid, effective and skilful without him….

Don`t give a damn about the sound and fury related to the name…Sevco ……THE Rangers …….A rose by any other name ……..

My concern about their existence was simply related to their baleful effect on Scottish society.

Nevertheless , I can see aspects of our own support which I find less than desirable.

Bottom line. If my kids lived in Scotland , I would have real reservations about them wearing our colours .

Surely you have to take a risk on Janko at some point?

We will never know how good he can be without giving him a chance. The last thing we need is another player in this bloated squad. We shouldn’t need more than 2 right backs.

You either play Janko or you get rid of him. Or Lustig.

Spending good money on a RB because Lustig’s always injured and Janko is too much of a risk is mental to me.

  17. Why on earth do we need to sign a right-back? Apart from Lustig we have Janko, Fisher and Ralston (plus the ineffable one). Better to get a left-back if Emilio is leaving.

  20. The secret behind Sevilla’s success?

“No one takes a ‘what great economic results’ banner to the stadium,” he says. Of all his signings, Kanouté would be “top three”, Monchi says, alongside Fabiano and Alves, who arrived an unknown 19-year old for around €200,000, having been spotted on one of those first scouting missions, and left for €36m with five titles under his arm. Each time they have sold, they have kept winning; Alves won this competition in 2006 and 2007 before departing. After the 2014 final, Rakitic went to Barcelona; after 2015, Carlos Bacca left for Milan.”

You are correct 100 per cent. Hopefully Roy has calmed down a little bit since working with MoN. He’s shown plenty of humility by working in the assistant role at Villa and the ROI.

If he gets the job he will be under a level of scrutiny and pressure that will require a cool head.

    Glasstwothirdsfull,

    Same old.

    Later

  27. I note that another twist in the rules will see Leicester in Pot 1 in the Group draw by virtue of the EPL’s standing. Until this change it has been the team’s coefficient that has determined the pot, hence Dortmund being in Pot 4 a couple of years back.

We have no such privilege in Scotland, can rely on no one to increase entry stage prospects, and as we stand alone we will rue last year’s torture for 5 long years.

It really is very hard to keep up with. We remain seeded and should be so through the qualifiers, but that is largely thanks to the beating of Barca that we will enjoy next year too before the coefficient potentially falls to a level on a par with BATE, Legia Warsaw and other unseeded teams.

Source is of course the incomparable Bert Kassies http://kassiesa.home.xs4all.nl/bert/uefa/data/method4/trank2016.html

Further up the pecking order from us there are some cliff edges facing the likes of Fenerbahce, Malaga, and even Inter should they have another poor European season.

It is mentioned on here many times that we play roulette every season financially with the qualifiers, but in a blindingly poor mixed metaphor it really is an ever decreasing circle. Failure to qualify, poorer coefficient, poorer seeding, less chance of qualification, never better than pot 4 in the CL, falling down the Europa seedings, harder games, fewer coefficient points and so on

Liverpool getting to the final this year are likely to finish with more coefficient points than all but the CL semi finalists and a couple of other exceptions. This maintains a much healthier ranking despite two fallow European years in the last 5.

I appreciate this is all very academic to how it feels on the night when losing out in the qualifiers or the sometimes moribund Europa league, but we need to arrest the slide and get back into the double figures every year. Qualification to the CL and home victories a minimum, or quarter finals in the Europa. Building blocks to remove as many bullets from chambers as we can.

The qualifiers loom large already, we need to give our new man a chance to prepare.

  28. TIMALOY29

    Extract from the article:

When Monchi took over in 2000, Sevilla faced a financial crisis and had just been relegated. Sixteen years on, they play Liverpool in the Europa League final seeking their third title in a row, their fifth in a decade. Four days later they play Barcelona in the Copa del Rey final. Fourteen finals in 10 years while making the profit their model demands (by my maths – circa €300m from player sales).
