Fitness gambles can backfire

734

News that Kris Commons had surgery yesterday on a back injury he’s been carrying for months was news to me. Injury and illness hampered Kris at various stages this (last?) season but when he reported back ‘fit’ his form didn’t hit previous heights. Now we know why.

Commons, Scott Brown and Mikael Lustig played through injury for large portions of the season. They are big players for Celtic and the story of our season can be seen through the prism of their situations. Jozo Simunovic was also less than 100% fit for what little we saw of him.

Correctly diagnosing the fitness of each of them will be important to Celtic’s performance next season. If we think Jozo and Scott will be capable of performing at Champions League level and they’re not, you could write the script on how next season will transpire.

The new manager will take a look at Kris’s age, vitals and recent injury record, and will immediately underestimate what he’s likely to get from the player next season. No new manager will rely on having a fit and able Kris Commons, but if fit, he’ll get a player with the craft to help him in Europe and domestically.

Mikael’s persistent hip injuries suggest we need to recruit a right back. There’s insufficient evidence to determine whether Saidy Janko is ready for the task, so we need to find someone who can take the pressure off Mikael’s hips.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to the newspaper advertisement about Resolution 12, which will run in The Guardian and a Swiss business ‘paper.  It’s been a remarkable project. You can read more information here.

  1. Should we appoint Brendan Rodgers, I hope he has learned from his spell at Liverpool where he seemed unable to fix a leaky defence that eventually cost them the league, they were very good in midfield and attack anytime I saw them on the TV.

  2. And please brief him, no Old Firm in his interviews, as, to continue with this is fraudulent as RFC were liquidated.

Rogers was one Steven Gerrard loss of footing away from being a legend for them.

Fate turns on the merest of things. A short a stud (a phrase most often associated with ACGR!!)

  4. Dessybhoy, The media will set traps for him, leading questions etc. Like, “are you looking forward to the return of the huns? “

I said its not only a Celtic issue, if Celtic go it alone on a new LNS commission it will fail, we will be accused of all sorts in the media, if however, Hearts, Aberdeen and others join us it becomes a Scottish football issue of governance.

That was my point, not that we shouldn’t do it, we need allies.

SG slipped I think at Crystal palace but they lost 3.0 , I felt watching them for a few months they were not good defensively, if he had have won them the league he would still be there.

I’m just hoping as Ronnie says he has learned and someone else will now get the benefit of that learning that BR has also learned and if we appoint him that he brings this with him. HH

Gerrard slipped v Chelsea and Demba Ba went through to score the only goal. You’re thinking of the previous game where they let a three goal lead slip v Crystal Palace

  8. Now that they are gone I can reveal a wee bit of inside information of a rift between Ronny Deila ,his back room staff ,and some senior players.

There was a mistrust by some senior players that the background staff were misdiagnosing injuries ,that the exercise regime for players returning from injury was causing more damage and aggravating injuries ,slowing down recovery time ,and causing friction.

It got to a point that Charlie Mulgrew was so exasperated that he sought independent medical advice and treatment for his injury.

It was not until he did this that his recovery started to improve.

This did not come from Charlie Mulgrew may I add.

SG slipped against Chelsea, they lost 2-0. The drew the next match 3-3 at Palace from 3-0 up.

Yes they will, I never heard Ronnie ever metion Old Firm and he was specifically asked by the media so it is possible if the club brief him beforehand about the media and their need to endorse the same club myth.

    To be forewarned ….

  11. Thanks guys

I thought it was against Chelsea that SG slipped.

    Thought I was losing it!

  12. It’s being repeated by several outlets now but they are all using the same source material Sky Sports News. Of course being No1 target guarantees nothing. Roy Keane wasNo1 last time.

  13. So not only was Ronny responsible for the teams “terrible” results but he’s was also double jobbing as the team doctor.

ffs leave the guy alone. It’s bad enough the media hounded him out without trying to ruin his chances of future employment.

Maybe that’s where Charlie went when he walked up the tunnel while the game was still on.

Ronny Deila has gone give it a rest. There will be a new Celtic manager soon to undermine.

  14. Yes you are all correct guys it was 3.3 with CP and a slip against Chelsea, snow on the roof you see, and only a passing interest inthe EPL

  15. No desire on my part to have the likes of Rodgers becoming our manager, especially if he was a supporter growing up. We should be casting our net far wider than our fan base.

Any new manager we recruit will carry an element of risk I would have liked to see Ronny stay with us as head of youth coaching as I believe he had some good ideas. Maybe that was offered to him I have no idea Roy Keane for me should be ruled out he has already said he will not be available until after the European Championships and for me we need someone in the job sooner rather than later. I see it as being between Brendan Rogers and David Moyes unless of course there are others we have not heard about. H.H.

If Brendan is interested, get him locked in a room, until he is very interested

    ==========

Can you clarify your thinking here?

If Rodgers is no.1 target does that automatically mean we did not cast our net wider?

What relevance does him being a supporter growing up have on his ability to do the job? Most would agree thats a positive?

Bookies favourite Brendan Rodgers bought 33 players whilst at Liverpool for a total of just over £292Million.

I’d be happy with that level of spend.

Whatever happened to the Jinky Fabergé Egg money??

They had a transfer committee at Liverpool. He didn’t have a veto on signings.

  21. If Sky story is true, does that mean Malky Mackay is number two choice if Rodgers deal falls through?

  22. Bournesouprecipe, At Liverpool he spent £292m!!! Can’t see Peter Lawwell stretching to that!

Very true about the candidates so far.

I like Rodgers and feel he may have something to prove.

There seems to be no great strategic thinkers on the decision making side with regards the footballing side.

The thought seems to be 100% towards profitably which is no bad thing but its to slanted in financial bias and detrimental to footballing side.

Can’t remember the names of guys recommending Spanish and belgian coaches who have brought success in tough leagues with modest means but they seemed good progressive candidates.

Hopefully this time the coach will be chosen purely with the football side in mind.

If Keane is appointed then we know the answer.

He would certainly fight our corner but the reality is his coaching record is poor so more likely an appointment to rally the fans.
