Fitness gambles can backfire

734

News that Kris Commons had surgery yesterday on a back injury he’s been carrying for months was news to me. Injury and illness hampered Kris at various stages this (last?) season but when he reported back ‘fit’ his form didn’t hit previous heights. Now we know why.

Commons, Scott Brown and Mikael Lustig played through injury for large portions of the season. They are big players for Celtic and the story of our season can be seen through the prism of their situations. Jozo Simunovic was also less than 100% fit for what little we saw of him.

Correctly diagnosing the fitness of each of them will be important to Celtic’s performance next season. If we think Jozo and Scott will be capable of performing at Champions League level and they’re not, you could write the script on how next season will transpire.

The new manager will take a look at Kris’s age, vitals and recent injury record, and will immediately underestimate what he’s likely to get from the player next season. No new manager will rely on having a fit and able Kris Commons, but if fit, he’ll get a player with the craft to help him in Europe and domestically.

Mikael’s persistent hip injuries suggest we need to recruit a right back. There’s insufficient evidence to determine whether Saidy Janko is ready for the task, so we need to find someone who can take the pressure off Mikael’s hips.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to the newspaper advertisement about Resolution 12, which will run in The Guardian and a Swiss business ‘paper.  It’s been a remarkable project. You can read more information here.

Bournesouprecipe, At Liverpool he spent £292m!!! Can’t see Peter Lawwell stretching to that!

    ————————————————————————————

Pfft! £300m is a mere couple of roastin’ hot gold bricks from Pete’s driveway..!

The jinky egg was Chicken Feed :-)

“A rare Faberge egg created as a tribute to Celtic legend Jimmy “Jinky” Johnstone has fetched nearly £15,000 at auction in Glasgow.

The Jinky egg, which is one of 19 created by Faberge in 2005, was bought anonymously at McTear’s Auctioneers.

The egg was sold by a pair of lifelong Celtic fans from Glasgow.

A Faberge egg commemorating George Best’s role in Manchester United’s 1968 European Cup win fetched £13,376 at the same auction.

Jimmy Johnstone is widely regarded as one of the best players Scotland has ever produced, and several years ago he was voted the greatest Celtic player of all time by fans of the club.

The 19 Faberge eggs – made from silver, enamel, yellow and black gold – represent the number of major medals Jinky won, including the UEFA European Cup, the Scottish league championship, the Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup.

They were made in tribute to the Celtic legend, who died in 2006 after a long battle with motor neurone disease.

Sellers David and Pauline McGinty said the money raised would help them start a new life in a family move to Shetland.

  3. I was thinking of the likes of Dr Joe and Ronnnie Deila. A foreign coach who has no previous connection with us. Imo, we need to move away from having a British/Irish old style manager. None of the leading EPL clubs have one. Neither should we, if we want to really progress.

Rodgers ticks a lot of boxes.

Including a box that the lesser known European candidates are less likely to tick – the bit of the interview where the potential candidate namedrops his contacts in the game… even more important when your scouting dept has been letting you down…

    BSR,

The 292m figure is a gross figure. The nett spend was ‘apparently’ £90m.

If you factor in the Transfer Committee and who sanctioned what, then it gets complicated to know who signed who.

  6. A guy I worked with bought one of those faberge eggs as an investment

He then loaned it to Celtic to put on display

As a result he got invites to all sorts of functions at Celtic, which he loved.

Then I heard he removed it and put it in the hall of fame at hamdump

    Must be aff his heid

  8. The Express online are reporting on it and by way of some background mention that RD was ‘dumped’ after the SC semi final defeat. There was me thinking he resigned!

  9. Clogher

Yip, I know. there is no way BR identified and signed all of these players by himself.

It’s a committee at all big clubs, it depends on how you interpret ‘final say’.

Ronny Deila and Neil Lennon both reckon they could veto any player at Celtic.

  10. Celtic why wait till next week.appointing the new manager.try and get done sometime this week. If it’s Brendan Rogers. or.Roy Keane.Malky Mckay. Then will have my full backing.

  11. Great to see the club going after such a high profile appointment. I for one am Very excited by the prospect of Brendan Rodgers. His style of play is not too dissimilar to Deila’s which should make the transition easier & I’d imagine he’d have a decent transfer budget.

Despite waiting for a big payout on Keane, I’d much prefer to lose my money.

Hopefully white smoke is imminent. H.H. Brendan Rodgers!

Went off Rodgers when he dyed his teeth white, and dumped his wife for some young blonde bint.

If he signs for us, I’ll be delighted to have a manager with a sparkling smile and a hot burd :-)

I would take Barton at Celtic Park. If he goes to another Glasgow club, the Camus quoting thug had better brush up on ‘The Plague’.

Probably best not to show a copy of ‘The Rebel’ though.

  14. Saw a documentary on the Brodge about him being interviewed for the Liverpool job, being successful, and then covering his preparations for the close season.

Very thorough, and remember him putting a young starlet called Raheem Stirling in his place for not giving the manager his full attention during a talk at training while they were in the States, I think. Next flight home was the warning, of which heed was taken.

Got a bit worried at one point when he started talking about himself in the 3rd person, right enough.

    Does Beatbhoy not like that!

Rodgers ticks a lot of boxes.

    ——————————————————-

    Brendan – Irish – Check!

Buck – Outta this world (net cast very far) – Check!

Ginger – Star of “Swing Time” (one for the Tommy Sheridan fans) – Check!

  16. To be fair, been telling you for a while that it is a toss up between Rodgers and Moyes.

Rodgers has always been the most likely in my view.

Keane, Lennon etc not at the races this time.

  17. He was on £5m per year at Liverpool!!! Again I don’t see PL going that far!

If we get him what a riddy for them, they sign an ex Brentford manager and we sign ex Liverpool. Ha Ha Ha.

Any new manager will be briefed to keep Old Firmism on the table…

    ——-

    Yeah, sadly.

You just need to look at the candidates to see how it’s going to go.

Wish we could just leave all that guff in the past.

Bringing it back helps one club. That club isn’t Celtic.

    Beefy,

Decent player but I wouldn’t want him within a million miles of cp. Far too much baggage and nonsense around him.
