YOU would have got long odds on Matt O’Riley being Celtic’s top goalscorer going into October.
Remarkably, though, the midfielder who netted a meagre three times last season is now one ahead of Kyogo Furuhashi in the marksman stakes after his dramatic stoppage-time winner against Motherwell at Fir Park.
His exquisite sidefoot finish from Greg Taylor’s superb left-wing cross took the 22-year-old playmaker to five goals in this campaign.
MATT FINISH…O’Riley takes to the air to knock the stoppage-time winner against Motherwell.
At this stage in the previous crusade, O’Riley had yet to get on the board and, in fact, it took him until February 11 before he claimed his breakthrough effort when he netted in the 5-1 Scottish Cup win over St Mirren at Parkhead.
The Londoner, who is poised to step up to the senior international set-up at his adopted country Denmark, is making up for lost time as he adds goalscoring to his many other attributes.
O’Riley claimed one in the 4-2 opening-day league victory over Ross County at Parkhead and doubled his tally with another in the 3-1 success over Aberdeen at Pittodrie the following weekend.
MATT FINISH…the Hoops midfielder reacts swiftly to net against Livingston in West Lothian.
He was on target in the 3-0 triumph over Dundee in Glasgow a fortnight ago and added to the list with a fourth against Livingston in last weekend’s 3-0 win in West Lothian.
And the playmaker, who signed a new four-year deal yesterday morning, eclipsed his prolific Japanese team-mate Kyogo with No.5 in the thrilling finale at Fir Park.
His latest moment of glory is well worth second look thanks to those good folk at Celtic TV Unique Angle.
Enjoy!
