Five games to make their point

260

If Eddie Howe wants to learn about Celtic before taking charge as expected on 1 June, he will have plenty of scope to see how they perform in challenging environments.  Between now and then, we will play at Ibrox as often as at Celtic Park, with trips to Easter Road and Pittodrie and the possibility of two Hampden dates thrown in.

With no undue disrespect to Livingston, win, lose or draw, there is little to be learned about how we perform against them at Celtic Park on Saturday, there can certainly be few positives for our prospective new manager to take away.  After that, we have Ibrox, Pittodrie, Ibrox, then hopefully a Scottish Cup semi-final.  Those who want to be part of his plans going forward, or who want a move south, will have their stage.

There are a few at Lennoxtown who think they could have done better this season.  Prove it in the next five games.

So there is a hitch in the Howe deal….shockaroonie 🙊🙈🙊

Time to move on from him.

    Go for Lucien Favre.

But lets be quite clear here money talks and bullshit walks.

Whatever the hitch it could have been sorted but not with Lawell and our board, they are holding us back and each passing day puts a massive challenge on any new manager for next season’s campaign.

This is getting embarrassing again, the same as the Lenny/Kennedy debacle from Seotember last year, that’s 8 months we knew we needed a new management team FFS and we have these clowns/custodians steering the ship. I DESPAIR.

Close a deal they could not close a feckin door.

I have had a fear from the start that our clown/custodians will keep Kennedy in situ for next season, I think they thought he would get the team playing good expansive football in the remaining games, beat the Huns twice in the league and say he deserves a chance but i think he blew their only plan, now they are scrambling about.. NO PLAN.

Aye, been saying that for awhile now. Lawwell is still pulling the strings. I also think this is a ‘gie the huns a shot’ furra few years vibe, then it’ll be our turn again. Makes me want to vomit tbh.

it could be that any manager ie EH will not take over until after we win/get papped oot of the cup, cos it would be an immediate stain on their new start………it’s Kennedys gig.

  5. It seems obvious to me that Celtic approached Howe.

Why, a football club of our world standing, does not put an advert in the paper is beyond me.!!!!

Imagine the number and quality of the applicants.

  6. Lawell is still CEO for a few weeks yet. So not getting EH deal completed should not be a surprise to anyone. He is hardly going to change his modus operandi now, is he?

No one tells him how to negotiate a deal.

If I was an English football manager who had walked off the job after being relegated and the owner was a mad billionaire Russian gangster who is stuck with an IOU for £133 million from said club, then I’d be locked in my bathroom not coming out, same as Eddie. Let’s appoint a manager who isn’t dodging sniper fire.

None of us know what’s happening with Eddie Howe or any other candidate for that matter. Just because there are stories in the papers and Sky Sports (remember this is the channel which can’t tell the difference between Dundee FC and Dundee Utd.!) doesn’t mean they are true. Papers have to fill the pages and if those stories are about Celtic ‘dithering, penny pinching, missing out on X, Y or Z all the better in Scotland to sell. Sky Sports have 24 hours each day to fill, if it’s rubbish, gossip or downright wrong who cares? They’ve moved on to the next ‘exclusive’ anyway.

This season has to play out and then we should know what’s happening, and yes I have no inside track on this just makes sense.

  11. If a manager wanted to give himself the best chance for next season

The following comment from a member of our site was prescient viz:

JJ, to your previous post (“a bearer of hope”) I responded I was concerned that it was taking too long for the official announcement on Eddie Howe, citing Celtic’s inability to “Close the Deal”. Something smells, it wouldn’t surprise if it’s off – if it was ever really on.

I can assure readers that my exclusive holds firm. However Peter Lawwell has thrown a spanner in the works. The following is from a member of the Celtic board:

“Eddie has told Celtic he’s not taking the job if Kennedy is part of his backroom team. He does not have a problem if Kennedy works with the youth.”

Pewter Pete’s attempts to shoehorn Kennedy into a position above his skill set is a deal breaker. Lawwell has been getting it his own way with Neil Lennon for far too long, but unlike Lennon, Howe did not leave his last position under a cloud.

Dominic McKay is not involved in negotiations. This is a Lawwell production. If his parting shot to Celtic is a second class coach with Kennedy in situ we will have a repeat of the post Rodgers fiasco.

The Camelot era is over. Kennedy’s time is up.

Agree fully with that. But …….. IF you were running the Club and wanted to keep your fans/supporters on-side would it not be really, really easy to make an official statement (via the SLO or other source) to clarify the steps that are being taken right now (in the most general of senses) in the pursuit of restructuring the Club. At a stroke the supporters are informed, they can dismiss the various ‘experts’ and their (perhaps) tainted views and can give the Club a bit of breathing space as they await developments.

Instead the vacuum is filled with some well – meaning (and some less well – meaning) gossip and viewpoints, lots of crud from media sources that are not terribly well known for favouring and promoting positive news about Celtic, and a growing feeling (which is not discounted by the Club) that things might be continuing as we have witnessed for a number of years now (and THAT doesn’t fill us/me with great enthusiasm and positivity).

We just don’t KNOW and that fact lies at the door of the Club. They are in a business that relies heavily on commitment and engagement from their customer base yet they seem to dismiss the idea that they should communicate, how ever generally, with that customer base. That I don’t understand. If they are not aware of the disquiet among the fan base, that I don’t understand either.

I am far from happy with our communication and have said so repeatedly, after the management team, CEO and the Board the next area which needs urgent work is the Communications Department, it has been woeful for years but in particular when it comes to positive fan communication it is almost non-existent. Don’t get me wrong I do not want Sevco PR which launches stupid statements every time anyone says anything even the tiniest bit critical of their Evil Empire. But what I do want is for Celtic to be proactive, open as it can be (there are rules around PLCs according to others which limits announcements and even hints about who might be the new manager, or so we’re told) and also engaging, none of which happens much if at all, with the noble exception of JP Taylor, who must have the most thankless task at Celtic Park.

OOFT!……tbh i’m still of the opinion Kennedy will be manager.

  19. One of the main reasons for having a DoF is to ensure continuity in the event (certain) that the manager leaves. Having a new manager appoint the DoF just means that he is liable to leave when the manager does, with all the upset that entails (like now for example!)

I would like Howe to come to us, but not at any price and certainly not at the price of blowing proper strategic change.

There are other good managers interested in joining us, The board are correct (in this

Instance) to hold firm (NOT old firm!!!) on this one.

  21. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

At no point have Celtic said “Eddie Howe will sign a contract with us by DATE”.

In fact, have they said ANYTHING officially about him?

(I know BBC reported talks at advanced stage and also that Pablo expects)

This will run for a bit before any conclusion is reached.

  22. ‘Bryson de Chambeau set unveil a new driver at Augusta’

I’m guessing it wont be Tiger Woods

  23. If Eddie Howe is demanding that Richard Hughes be appointed as DoF then I agree that the club should move on. If that came to pass then Richard Hughes would leave when Eddie decided to up sticks and we would be back in the same mess. We need to get the FoF in as quickly as possible and let him appoint the manager/coach. Then we will have continuity when the latter moves on.

  24. garygillespieshamstring on

Which member of the Celtic board isjj’s source?

PL, DD, Bankier ? Maybe the burd who was appointed for no apparent reason other than to be seen to be PC?

I’m of the opinion that his source is in his very fertile imagination.

He’s got no more sources in the boardroom than me, and I have none.

Like everything else that has appeared on this story, it is someone’s speculation to sell papers or get hits on a blog

  25. When there’s days of speculation that comes and goes without a contract being signed then this cynic starts to believe it will not happen.

I suspect Howe wants to wait until the EPL season is finished and see what opportunities open up down there in close season.

We simply can not wait on him.

We now follow basic HR procedures and move down the list of successful interview candidates.

If no one only Howe passed the interview then we start the process again.

My big fear is we wait on Howe and get Kennedy when Howe decides to opt for Newcastle in June.

    Move on, Celtic.

    An Tearmann

I did see it and replied, that’s a good one as there are ongoing discussions about how to enhance the Glenveagh National Park, from everything to new car parks to another visitor centre at the head of the Glen etc.

The best April fool I ever heard of here was about 10 years ago and somebody had sent flyers around town to start a campaign to halt the Council’s secret plan to build and underground system. There was widespread agreement in the town about it but the sticking point was that in order to build the Cathedral Quarter station the Cathedral would have to be demolished! I got one of the flyers through the door and while it was really well done, I thought to myself, it has taken about 10 years for the Council to agree to a town bus, this is never going to happen! The funny thing is that the story went on and on and did the rounds on Highland Radio and in the ‘Donegal News’. The best letter on it was someone from Raphoe wrote that while he’d be sad to see the Cathedral demolished it would also be a good opportunity to take the old Cathedral back in Raphoe which was, ahem, acquired by the Church of Ireland!

The following year the ‘Donegal News’ had a photo of an elephant on the Dry Arch roundabout on the front page and the story was Gardaí were warning motorists not to stop to take photos etc. The funny thing was it wasn’t an April fool’s joke as Duffy’s Circus was in town and had sent out the elephant (with its handler) to eat grass on it and get publicity for the circus. The April Fool story was below that about how a local man in the west of the county was giving out about how he was surrounded by houses but nearly all were holiday homes, empty most of the year. The story finished with the quote form him, ‘I’m at my wits end, there was a time if interlopers came into the area you could threaten them to move on and if that failed you could burn them out, apparently that’s frowned on nowadays’. No one batted an eyelid and noticed the story as an April Fool!!

All well here in town, getting busy as most people have given up ‘staying at home’ and also keeping to 5kms form home.

Hopefully, visitors back in the summer.

    Hail, hail!

    An Dun

I agree. It has been my belief that guys like Eddie Howe only come here if there is nothing better on offer in England.

Even if he agreed now, I don’t believe that would necessarily mean he would be our manager on the first day of the season. A better offer from elsewhere and he would possibly walk.

I thought that was the reason NL got the permanent post. The board knew he wasn’t likely to get an offer from England anytime soon so he was given the job to avoid another mid-season upheaval. Didn’t work out though.

  28. Go tell the Spartim on

Celtic PLC’s biggest failing that they have no intention of solving is the contempt they have for supporters (customers), we are lead to believe that there are some clever people there. The contempt stems from the piss poor communication they have with us, unless it’s an ex players birthday or the shop has reopened.

They let the SMSM walk all over us without a peep of a response on any fabricated horsesh*t they come up with, their PR department Is run by a Hearts fan, so if there are any clever people there they could conceivably concoct some out of statement about where we are, without divulging confidential information and without breaching Stick market rules, surely ?

  29. Just as well PL et al weren’t involved in building the Nightingale hospitals.

Dithering for whatever reason is not strength, it is weakness and lack of vision.

    HH.

  30. I’m not sure it’s dithering, it’s more trying to squeeze the last possible drop out of a negotiation. Doesn’t always work out for the best, especially when the other party has other options.
