Five in open battle for central defensive places

400

After the dust settled on Sunday’s game I considered the four central defenders we fielded.  Acknowledging his poor performance, Brendan Rodgers reminded us Dedryck Boyata was just back from injury and will improve.  Jozo Simunovic coasted through the game but got drawn into the spate of off the ball acts which was a feature of the game.

Kris Ajar (19) continued his excellent recent form, while Jack Hendry (22) didn’t miss a beat when introduced after Jozo’s red card.  There will be tougher challenges ahead, but these two are more than comfortable at this level and have a genuine claim to a starting place at Hampden.

The Morton game a week earlier gave Marvin Compper an opportunity to show how match-fit he is – not sufficiently, was the outcome.  Marvin is at the club to bring experience and stability to the defensive line.  Our four games before the split are all against lower half of the league opposition.  The German international must be given plenty of game time in the coming month.

What our central defence will look like for the qualifiers remains an open book.  All five players discussed above are under consideration.  I expect comings and goings throughout the window in this area too.  Brendan will expect Marvin to play a significant part, but it will be a battle for all of them; which is a good thing.

[re gate sharing] -It’s an altruistic suggestion, but gate sharing is gone, never to return.

So far this season we’ve shared gate money (50/50,after SPFL or SFA deductions) with:

    Dundee

    Hibs

    Kilmarnock

    Motherwell

    Brechin

    Morton

    Partick Thistle

    So not quite dead then.

  2. And …

Has it been noted that the BBC website has chosen to illustrate its piece on the sectarianism in football report with a photo of …

    you can guess, I’m sure

In terms of League matches (i.e. the real game changer) it is. Gate sharing at neutral venues is a given.

Apologies for the delayed reply, pesky work called.

Yes of course. Psychological. Silly fone and it’s predictive text.

I believe that our record away from home in European games manifests in a negative attitude . It seems we expect to fail.

I truely think that we should and will do better with the aid of some mind therapy.

My main point was :- Although money is obviously a factor it’s not the defining criteria. It’s far too easy used as an excuse as other teams have shown.

The photo I saw was of Celtic fans in the foreground, the other mob in the background.

Cleverly done, because you remember most the first thing you see in it. Us.

But still, they take up about half of it.

  7. And, finally:

Which club is living hand-to-mouth on gate receipts supplemented by loans from supporters’ groups, directors and payday sharks?

Aye,I think you have a point. No way we can be THAT bad so consistently,no matter who we play.

You’d prefer Celtic fans gave them half the receipts from Celtic Park to help them out?

    Dunno.

5 of the 7 were not at a neutral venue

  13. STV has a pic of Ian Maxwell, saying he could be next SFA CEO, he is at CP, guy behind him has a Celtic club tie on, pure coincedence…..

I’d like Rangers to hand over 25 per cent of their gate and season book money to the other clubs in the SPL – wouldn’t you?

  15. Big month in Sevconia coming up. Three key dates:

    – 30th March 2018: By court order the moths must be released from Dave King’s wallet (war chest?)

    – 6th April 2018: All documentation and justification for UEFA license must be returned to the SFA Licensing Committee

    – 15th April 2018: Carthage gets delendified again(?)

That implies that Celtic would also have to give away a percentage – the same %? More? Not with you on that one. We have a cost base for running our operations including a 60k seat stadium so this won’t fly.

Is this one of. Of the DSS gigs? They sounds like a good evening.

Say hi to the boys for me, and tell Ms. brogan that Seamus and I would be happy to meet her, if fancies coming over for a visit! If you think it might sway her, I’ll send a very cute picture of Seamus!

    :)

  18. deliasmith –

I have no objections to all SPFL clubs getting an equal cut of TV money. So if the intention is to be equitable (in order to fix the broken business model) then perhaps this is the place to start and a better TV deal is the key.

I have watched small parts of some of the CL games and felt that these players ( other than the obvious ones) were not really much better than Celtic`s players but, importantly, they looked as though they believed in themselves more than do most of our players .

Not sure how I came to that opinion but I do trust the observations of the subliminal mind.
