Fix this narrative, Celtic

Celtic have not beaten either of the Rangerses in a Scottish Cup Final since before the Berlin Wall fell.  Joe Miller’s 1989 winner after the most moaned about throw-in in history is the landmark moment.  We were poor that season yet managed to hold the line at Hampden in the sun.

In the remaining 23 years of Oldco we met and lost to them twice in the Final (1999 and 2002), both by a single goal.  The last seven of these finals, since the epic 4-0 in 1969, were decided by one goal.  With so much on the line, underdogs often find strength.  We have twice lost to Newco at Hampden in the Scottish Cup, both semis and both defeats, despite Celtic being strong favourites, just as we are tomorrow.

Despite being champions, Celtic have an interesting edge to them going into the game.  Their win in the crucial league game between the sides this month was followed by a chorus from the losers that they were heroic in defeat.  That is not how I saw the game, but apparently, we got the edge on a better side that day.

Fix this narrative, Celtic.

  1. Tom McLaughlin on

Good morning from a grey and mild Auld Reekie. No movement in the leaves overhanging my bedroom window which is a good sign.

Yesterday the skin on my baldy napper started peeling after being burnt under the midday sun at Celtic Park last Saturday. I’ll wear my cap today, and my special Lisbon 67 hoops.

It is 59 years since my first cup final. Today will be my last as I have given up my season ticket. I was 11 when my dad took me to see Billy McNeill head the winner in a 3-2 victory over Dunfermline in 1965. There were tears of joy as the arrival of Big Jock ended years of Rangers domination. Little did we know that in two short years we’d be champions of Europe.

I’d settle for a similar result today although my old ticker might not appreciate such a scoreline.

    I’m going for 3-0 Celtic.

With the league in the bag, I believe our bhoys will be relaxed and full of confidence going into this game and having lost the title, the Gers will be scared shitless. They just don’t have the character or leadership to turn things around.

I’d be happy with a last minute 1-0 to be honest, as long as Callum is lifting the cup at the end of the day.

    Bring on The Rangers.

Very little noise coming from Celtic this week.

    I really like that approach.

We do our talking on the pitch.

Feeling relaxed now, nerves will undoubtedly kick in tomorrow morning.

    —–

Was listening to the pressers from Hampden Tavpen was talking about how they have to an extra 10-15% management on the park – I’m not even sure what that means but that suggests to me that he knows how far behind us they have been.

McGregor was talking about how we need to show up because if we don’t we have the right to win amd these are the days you play football for – again to me he just seemed the more determined captain.

2-0 to the good guys 🙏

Enjoy your day Tom, I hope we give you another amazing memory to bookend your cup final attendances 👍

  4. Good morning from a very calm and still Garngad, weather 10 degrees and sunny/cloudy.

I think exactly the same as Tom, our bhoys will be a bit more relaxed and play our natural game.

Although I have went for 3 – 1 I really want us to put a marker down and show clement and his support how far they are behind our 1st 11 when all fit and if we add 4 or 5 quality and only loose a couple then they ain’t catching us for at least 6 or 7 years.

Anyway Tom I will contact you through these pages next season to attend a game if you are up for it, but please no jokes.😉🤣

Anyone read a stat about how the team who has just won the league does in the Scottish Cup final?

I reckon it must be high % of wins – shown they are best team over the course of the season and are on a high from lifting the trophy.

Sorry to burst your bubble but Rangers won the last derby final 3-2 in 2002 – just a week after Celtic lifted the League Championship trophy, winning the title by a landslide.

The only thing worrying me is that I am not worried

It’s been a while since I have been this relaxed or this confident going into a Huns game

60 years of watching us against them should teach me it’s never that simple

All eyes on big Matt at the end of the game. I think it will be pretty obvious if it’s his last for us….

I was 11 Years and 5 Months old when Celtic won in Lisbon….NOT Ten years old.

I hope that CELTIC are ” HOT” Today !

To all the Celtic supporters going to the game Today and in Pubs watching etc…..I hope that you all get home safely, especially if there thousands of angry Hun fans on the rampage after the game ?

  19. On this day 57 years ago,1967, My mum and I left our house in Kilmartin Place, Arden, to go to the Scottish Cup Final v Aberdeen.

My Dad was a Public House Manager and couldn’t get the time to take me to games, though he did take me to my first, the SCF of ’61 and then the replay!

As we made our way down to the 45 Terminus in Carnwadric to get the bus to Shawlands, we met one of our Celtic-supporting neighbours, David Carr. He insisted on paying our fare on the bus.

Once we made Shawlands we headed to the “Marlborough” Taxi rank to head up to Hampden, as we approached the rank a young man asked if we would like to share his cab as he was also going to the game, and we did, and yet again he refused to take any money from us for the fare!

We had gone to the stadium early to try and get a Stand Ticket, but there wasn’t a hint of one let alone two.

As time got nearer KO I noticed to the right of the main stand a large gate where a man was allowing people into the ground who seem to be young boys accompanied by an adult. I was 12 then, and I asked my Mum to follow me as I thought I had seen someone selling tickets :)))).

As we approached the gate I nodded to the gentleman and said hello, to my wonderful surprise he opened the gate and we walked through. Once inside I herded my mum to the right and into the “Celtic End” All this time my mum was asking me “Where do we pay!”!! :)))

1967 SCF free! Great memories, great score, great team! por cierto.

Last night it was brought to my attention that 2 Cup Final tickets — 1 Celtic and 1 Rangers — were being auctioned online. When I went to bed, the highest bid was over £700.

I was informed that the tickets were being auctioned by a representative of a youth football club in Edinburgh.

I am aware that the SFA distribute free tickets to amateur football clubs throughout the country. I remember when I was 14 being given a ticket for Scotland v England in 1970 by my youth team manager.

A few years ago my son was handed a free ticket by his manager for Scotland v Ireland at Celtic Park.

These free tickets are meant to be handed over to players. They are certainly not intended to be sold off to the highest bidder to fill club coffers.

My first Scottish cup final, at the Kings Park end with my late father John.He enjoyed the 1954 win over Aberdeen with St.Peters CSC Belfast and friends from Linwood and Springburn,To all those on CQN a very good morning. Go on Bhoys( players and supporters) we can do it.

    POR CIERTO

A great story. Thanks for sharing.

I got a free ticket from the school for the 67 final and was in the Schoolboys enclosure in front of the main stand.

  23. The pressure is all on them today. Clement will be aware of the Beale’s fate and he’ll be going down an identical road should they lose today.

We’re clear favourites and should get the job done. Looking forward to a great day.

The war has been won this season so today is among the more relaxed games in recent weeks.

  24. The last time we beat rangers in a Scottish cup final my dad was 4 years younger than I am now.

It was the last trophy we won for 6 years.

It was the year I got married.

It was the year the Berlin Wall came down.

In the past 9 Scottish cup games between these 2 teams there was a 1 goal margin determining the outcome on 8 occasions.

In these 9 there were no fewer than 5 won by the team which had not won the league that season.

There are many reasons we have hope today. Earlier posters (David 66 and Tom Mc and others) have highlighted this well. There are many good reasons and not just blind faith.

The long term trends and stats suggest this won’t be easy. Scottish Cup finals are rarely straight forward like the 4-0 69 or 6-1 72 or 3-0 in 01.

Bobby Davidson in 70 still haunts me as does Tom Forsyth 73 and as does Joe Miller haunt them in 89. Roy Aitken dismissal in 84.

It’s a one off game. The stakes are high.

I will be wearing my 1989 Top today. The same I wore that hot day driving up from London and back…..I have washed it since.

Hopefully it can bookend a historic period in our history. Hopefully my son and I can enjoy many more Scottish cup triumphs again v them together.

Great Celtic times these but I don’t think today is the ‘gimmie’ some do. Any win will do for me.

  25. So good it’s a 3pm kick off again today.

A bit of Coia’s and a beer at the Palais. A drive by the Louden via Paradise en route to Hampden for us.

Hopefully return to Paradise 3hours later.
