Fix this narrative, Celtic

Celtic have not beaten either of the Rangerses in a Scottish Cup Final since before the Berlin Wall fell.  Joe Miller’s 1989 winner after the most moaned about throw-in in history is the landmark moment.  We were poor that season yet managed to hold the line at Hampden in the sun.

In the remaining 23 years of Oldco we met and lost to them twice in the Final (1999 and 2002), both by a single goal.  The last seven of these finals, since the epic 4-0 in 1969, were decided by one goal.  With so much on the line, underdogs often find strength.  We have twice lost to Newco at Hampden in the Scottish Cup, both semis and both defeats, despite Celtic being strong favourites, just as we are tomorrow.

Despite being champions, Celtic have an interesting edge to them going into the game.  Their win in the crucial league game between the sides this month was followed by a chorus from the losers that they were heroic in defeat.  That is not how I saw the game, but apparently, we got the edge on a better side that day.

In summer of 1966 I went to the top of the Empire State Building in New York. When I got to the top there standing looking out on the city were Jimmy Johnstone, Bobby Lennox and Willie O’Neill What a moment that was..

Today also brings back many memories of the Big Cup day in Lisbon. About this time in 1967, I am in a car heading into the city for lunch having just pick up friends at Lisbon Airport. Lunch and then off to the stadium for the game.

    Connaire,

When standing atop The Empire State, with those titans of our club, and when experiencing Lisbon, did you foresee the question a generation later, asking Did you see them coming? :-))

May i ask discreetly you keep a great Celtic man in your prayers who was in Estoril and Lisbon with you.not many left now.

With thanks Fr.C.K.take care and God Bless

Completely agree. We got the one that we needed. UCL will give us (probably) another significant step up in cash. I’ve long been of the view that cups are great when they come with a league flag. Otherwise, they are booby prizes on their own.

Of course a cup win will be celebrated across the river as if it was the be all and end all.

That said, I desperately want us to win.

Off the Ottawa CSC to cheer the Bhoys on.

    Stay safe, everybody.

  6. See many Tim’s forecasting a big win for Celtic . I sincerely hope so . But I’m not a lover of triumphalism, what was it Big Jock said “ only a fool would predict a win in a Celtic rangers game . (. Something along those lines . ) we will have to be on song today we are up against 16 h#ns
