Fixtures in 2003, 2008, and 19th C Glasgow

925

The mind is a remarkable thing.  If you ask around, you’ll find Celtic fans tell you we played Boavista in the Uefa Cup semi-final in Porto on the Thursday night, before going to Ibrox on the Saturday (it was the Sunday).

Similarly, Barry Ferguson is mumping his gums without restrain today, complaining about Rangers fixtures in May 2008.  Rangers were due to play a ridiculous number of games in May due to qualifying for the Scottish Cup and Uefa Cup finals, while catching up on postponed fixtures.

The SPL decided to accommodate them by extending the league programme until two days before the Scottish Cup final.  This final was on the last possible date before clubs were ordered to release players for that year’s Uefa European Championships, which started 14 days later.

This season has echoes of 2008 but nothing more.  Whereas clubs would have been forbidden from using certain players after the date of the Scottish Cup final in 2008, under current proposals for this year, the second bottom club from the Premiership and qualifier from the Championship will need to retain a number of players beyond their contract end date of 31 May.

Retaining players beyond 31 May will cost clubs money, and players could theoretically refuse to extend their season by a few days, which is this season’s problem.  2008’s problem was a hard deadline imposed by Uefa with no extensions possible.  The decision was out of the SPL’s hands.

Great article on the club site today marking Br. Walfrid’s passing and the struggles faced by our forefathers in the late 19th Century.  The news that the Foundation are feeding 500 of Glasgow’s homeless today continues the momentum from Wednesday night.  Well done to all involved.

Interesting item on Sicilian radio re 67 year old Blackpool FC fan being forced to cough up 25 k ( in preference to legal action) re online comments re the owners of Blackpool FC.

club’s owner Owen Oyston and chairman Karl Oyston has apologised for comments made on the internet.

Frank Knight, who published his apology on the website Facebook, is also paying £20,000 damages to the Oystons.

The family is seeking £150,000 damages for allegedly defamatory comments on the Back Henry Street website.

Karl Oyston is being investigated by the Football Association over abusive texts sent to a Blackpool supporter.

In a statement published on his Facebook page, Mr Knight said he apologised for the “harm, distress and financial losses my comments have caused both BFC and the Oystons”.

He added: “I note that the combined net assets value at cost of Segesta [a company that operates the club and its stadium] and BFC were £32 million as at May 2014, compared with -£42,000 as at May 1987, when the Oystons took over BFC.

“I accept the Oyston family’s main objective is, and always has been, for the financial stability and success for, and of, BFC.”

In February Tim Fielding, a director of a personal injuries law firm and the former chair of the Blackpool Supporters’ Trust apologised for comments he had made.

Earlier that month, dozens of Blackpool fans attended a court hearing in Manchester for a separate legal action brought by the Oystons against a fan.

David Ragozzino, 32, was given 21 days to respond to a claim for damages from the club. He is due to meet with the club next week.

On 30 January another fan, Stephen Sharpe, apologised to the Oystons over his online comments, withdrawing his posts after accepting they were “false, defamatory and, in some cases, threatening”.

Blackpool supporters have been involved in demonstrations, match boycotts and social media campaigns over the way Oyston family run the club

  4. My recollection of 2008 was that our dear friends were still up in arms even though the league was extended, as they asked for longer. And the backlog was caused by a cup replay as they couldnt beat Partick in one go, plus a cancellation at Ibrox due to a waterlogged pitch! Now who could they blame for that…..

  5. Does it matter if the two previously disgraced directors are accredited ‘fit and proper’ accreditation to be directors in a phoenix club?

Well only if you don’t believe there was any value at all in the intent and the ink that was used to define the rules.

Demean and bastardise one rule and then stop the train of abuse.

Rules are rules are rules. If you can’t abide by them then why apply to be a member in the first place?; Unless you are an unrepentant rule breaker…. look at me I’m devious, I’m sleekit, I’m going to rip you all off for your money, and then I’m going to ram it down your throats – we are the people….

    Does it matter?

    Well you decide.

  6. How much are the new huns already in debt? Their last books put the figure at 31 million, but I don’t believe their last books.

Before they come into the SPL are they solvent?

  7. kitalba

Quite a few been saying that for months now Kitalba, what’s the point of having a financial basket case back in the top league? Who’s going to guarantee they can fulfil their fixtures, where’s the rules when you need them eh?

I’m sure the people at Livingston will be happy the way the rules have been evenly applied at their club and the Govan club..

How much more of this can the game take??

It is not about how much they are in debt. It is about how much they can generate for otbers as the wurlds maist successful club. They have been insolvent for 10 years. Diddled half a billion to keep timmy down but as long as we make 5 m profit a year it does not matter.

I personally think the game is rigged. No seriously, I believe the game is corrupted by the corrupted, not just in Scotland, but my personal interest is my club an the league in which they play in.

I believe that league is corrupt therefore, and the club I supported for 50 years with my hard earned coin is complicit in the corruption.

But Hey! I might be wrong. Maybe our club know the huns never cheated us, ever, but have neglected just to inform us. Maybe our club does not believe that club phoenix, club 13, is insolvent. Maybe they never did get to sight the 5 way agreement, after all, before it was inaugurated. But then why post Charles Green, having received his golden nugget licence, decrying the 5 way agreement an illegal document, then but then why not did not a whisper of heebie-jeebies, or incredulity, seep out from Parkhead?

Maybe our club made a mistake by increasing certain season ticket prices to accommodate the return of the hun. As if they would, I could not believe that of Celtic for one moment, and the hun not even been promoted yet.

re intrusive adverts- there was a feature on this on BBCR4 earlier.

You can download software eg ADBLOCK+, which will make them much less intrusive, but a lot of websites, which rely on the cash generated from adverts, are not keen if this becomes more prevalent.

I don’t know how much the ole bhlog relies on advertisin’ revenue to bring us the thoughts of ole KevJungle,Ernesto Lynch etc etc.

My pet hate is the various gambling websites.

Although of course if they were to feature certain women of a red headed gloriousness I could change my mind.
