Fixtures in 2003, 2008, and 19th C Glasgow

925

The mind is a remarkable thing.  If you ask around, you’ll find Celtic fans tell you we played Boavista in the Uefa Cup semi-final in Porto on the Thursday night, before going to Ibrox on the Saturday (it was the Sunday).

Similarly, Barry Ferguson is mumping his gums without restrain today, complaining about Rangers fixtures in May 2008.  Rangers were due to play a ridiculous number of games in May due to qualifying for the Scottish Cup and Uefa Cup finals, while catching up on postponed fixtures.

The SPL decided to accommodate them by extending the league programme until two days before the Scottish Cup final.  This final was on the last possible date before clubs were ordered to release players for that year’s Uefa European Championships, which started 14 days later.

This season has echoes of 2008 but nothing more.  Whereas clubs would have been forbidden from using certain players after the date of the Scottish Cup final in 2008, under current proposals for this year, the second bottom club from the Premiership and qualifier from the Championship will need to retain a number of players beyond their contract end date of 31 May.

Retaining players beyond 31 May will cost clubs money, and players could theoretically refuse to extend their season by a few days, which is this season’s problem.  2008’s problem was a hard deadline imposed by Uefa with no extensions possible.  The decision was out of the SPL’s hands.

Great article on the club site today marking Br. Walfrid’s passing and the struggles faced by our forefathers in the late 19th Century.  The news that the Foundation are feeding 500 of Glasgow’s homeless today continues the momentum from Wednesday night.  Well done to all involved.

A few seasons back, some of the top clubs got refused licenses etc, accusations flying round of non fit and proper owners, washing up money for the mob etc etc..

We’re concerned with our game naturally but the game is bent everywhere, with such huge sums of money involved there’s no way that major international “players” would not be tempted to dip their beaks..

No I mean’t here on CQN, the Tim WE:))

Celtic would be insane to bank on the bigot pound with the way affairs are over there as would any club in the Premier League. I’m not sure the club hope or despair about them coming back it’s just a fact of life that was always going to happen at some point when they got a license to play in the lower leagues.

The idea that Celtic at a board level are hoping they will come back doesn’t resonate with me, I think the other day TBB posted the figures and it’s not at all bad without them in fact it was better if I remember correctly.

We didn’t go under when they liquidated and we won’t go under should their new version arrives.

I’m sure if we do play them the park will be full both sides of the river and that will be that, chance gone to clean up the game, you have to wonder why there is no drive to clean up our game???

  21. Anybody think Jabba may have helped Bawwy with his article in the DR today?

Remember when you used to get negative stories involving Celtic and the SFA. A source close to the SFA told the SMSM that Celtic were asking for linesmen to be a bit more vigilant when it came to Robbie Keane as TV showed he onside more than off. Oh how the media laughed. I genuinely believe that was a game changer and Celtic weren’t going to be shat upon again. I think the source close to the SFA might have lived to regret that one. GIRUY Darrell.

My recollection of 2008 was that our dear friends were still up in arms even though the league was extended, as they asked for longer. And the backlog was caused by a cup replay as they couldnt beat Partick in one go, plus a cancellation at Ibrox due to a waterlogged pitch! Now who could they blame for that…..

Don’t forget the game against the mighty Gretna that the Waltmeister chickened out of ahead of a CL game.

During that 2008 season in January rangers had a weekend game against Gretna postponed at their request because they had a European game the following midweek and didn’t want to play Gretna four days before it.

    Gretna FFS.

The rearranged game was one of the games which caused them a backlog in April/ May.

As regards what will happen to us in the future, with or without them, I hope we find a separate competition to compete in.

It’s not true Celtic are already factoring them into season ticket prices is it?
