Flag ban feels provocative

1033

It all seems a bit cloak and dagger to suggest that pyrotechnics are smuggled into football grounds inside flags and banners.  I’d always assumed the ‘stick it up your jumper’ technique would have been the delivery mechanism, not that I’ve any experience of the subject.

Flares have been an increasing menace at football games across the UK in recent years, including earlier this season at a Europa League qualifying game at McDiarmid Park, which passed off without mention in the media, but police have previously limited their interventions to lectures and the occasional arrest.

Football clubs are dependent on Police Scotland for safety licenses for games, and in their wisdom, the police have determined this action will remove one method of entering a stadium with pyrotechnics and discharging them without detection.  The ‘stick it up your jumper’ technique remains, as does ‘light it while pretending to tie your laces’.  Jumpers and tie-up shoes are the real enemy here.

This is an arbitrary over-reaction to the criticism Police Scotland came under for failing to properly police the vandalism at Fir Park, it will not prevent anyone intent on letting off flares inside a football ground from doing so.  Over-reacting after under-policing is a well-known phenomenon.  Going after flags and banners feels provocative. Coincidence?

You’re likely to find out if you’re in a provocative mood on Thursday; Police Scotland will know that provoking a crowd seldom quietens things down.  The reaction to Fir Park made me hopeful that we’d seen the last flare from the Celtic support, now who knows? We’re deep in muscle flexing territory here.

“Kenny Macaskill hates the GB , he is obsessed by them. The grand plan is to purify the football fan (well, the Celtic fan, anyway)”.

    ——————————————————————–

This is the same Kenny Macaskill who was arrested at Wembley on suspicion of being Drunk & Disorderly with boisterous behaviour.

It was a simple misunderstanding he said.

Pots and Kettles spring to mind.

    HH, Always in Celtic.

PS : The travelling Hearts support on Saturday was the smallest I’ve seen. The Celtic support were not the only ones affected by a ridiculous grouping of circumstances.

  2. Right,the only tricky situation left is how Voguepunter will get his flares in to McDairmid Park…….:}

  3. Ah now we should one grateful should we. They have realised the crass stupidity of what they agree. It’s sheer un workability and now in a magnanimous gesture your are allowed flags.

It’s an absolute disgrace that. Elric agreed to this in the first place. Now they and the cops realise they have gone too far we are expected to praise them.

If anyone from celtic is reading this then you can shove your u turn and you can shove your season book and your sycophancy where the sun doesn’t shine.

    Interesting quote.

Though it does make you wonder what sort of nation Scotland was (if indeed it was a nation at all) when there was such a divergence of views and practice between two parts of it over something as simple as how to dress.

But that’s a discussion for another time and place.

  5. Neg anon & the green man,

I’ll save you two the bother……

Celtic and Peter lawwell wanted the flag ban to stand. It was good ol’ st Johnstone and the boys in blue who got the ban lifted.

Sorry about the delay my point is were they celtic fans not beyond the possibility that plants within the support did this ,who would plant them and in whose interest would it serve ,of course I might just be overly suspicious unnecessarily

In the last 15 seasons (since I started paying attention) the attendance has always been reported as tickets sold, not bums on seats.

As I said the corresponding fixture last season, which benefited from a 3pm KO and no tv coverage was also down to about 25k. I’m not saying board dissatisfaction isn’t a factor. It’s just not the main one.

  9. TBB – I can’t make the game but I’m not taking a banner just to spite them.

In all seriousness I hope then place is awash with banners and flags, alive with noise, the players but on a performance and the eejits keep their pyro crap to themselves.

    Glad common sense has prevailed.

  10. Right, see if someone only bought tickets because they thought flags and banners were banned, can they now get a refund?

In days of instant communication Celtic need to gear up to respond quickly to set out the position with regard to Celtic.

That means someone at Celtic nominated with the job of scanning Celtic web sites or Twitter for anything that could be damaging to Celtic’s good name.

There are people, and they show up regularly on CQN, who use anything that can be used to support their anti Board agenda and whilst Celtic are getting their act together some folk use the delay to promote the idea Celtic are to blame.

I prefer to get as much information as I can before rushing to judge but I am never in a rush to judge having no agenda to make me.

The only antidote is to put the facts out there as quickly as possible but whilst a rumour or damaging meaning can be made instantly out of thin air, research and gathering the facts takes time and in that time rumour grows and damage to the spirit of Celtic is done.

So it IS important that Celtic not only catch news as it emerges but before it emerges. I keep referring to lack of capacity and this is yet another example of that capacity failing.

It looks like Police Scotland are behind this one and it looks like they are overstepping their mark and intruding on personal freedoms.

This is what MSPs must be asked to raise in the Scottish Parliament. Is the OBB allowing police to infringe on human rights?

Played the right way this could be a collosal own goal by Police Scotland and the way to make it a final result is via our MSPs.

I wish folk would stop coming here and blaming everything from the weather to the scarcity of bacon wrapped cocktail sausages at M&S on the Celtic Board and got off their arses and took smart effective action.

My MSP will be hearing from me shortly as will Celtic with regard to the bacon wrapped mini sausages at M&S.

  19. You have to ask – why no such discussions prior to the announcement of the ban?

That the club now tries to take some credit for the removal of the ban – well, they really do think we’re half wits. The only reason for this u-turn is the universal condemnation and more significantly, the phone calls enquiring about returning the tickets.

‘Pigs in blankets (also known as Wesley Dogs in parts of the US, and kilted sausages in Scotland) refers to a variety of different sausage-based foods in the United States, United Kingdom, Denmark, Australia, Ireland, Germany, Belgium, Russia, Canada, and Japan. They are typically small in size and can be eaten in one or two bites. For this reason, they are usually served as an appetizer or hors d’oeuvre or are accompanied by other dishes in the ‘main course’ section of a meal. In the West, especially in the United States and Canada, the bite-sized variety of pigs in a blanket is a common hors d’oeuvre served at cocktail parties and is often accompanied by a mustard or aioli dipping sauce.’

-call me ole fashioned but I’ve never heard them cried ‘kilted sausages’.

Pigs in a blanket are usually different from sausage rolls, which are a larger, more filling item served for breakfast and lunch in parts of Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and, more rarely, the United States and Canada.

So we’ve had a Celtic official (JPTaylor) state that this club did not agree with this move but had to comply as it was by the hosts and police.

The parties get together and agree to have the ban lifted, presumably because St J realised they were going to lose a ton of money, but hopefully because of a little pressure from Celtic – after they dropped the club in it with their initial statement.

Primarily this was rooted in the reaction of the fans and the clubs’ listened.

I struggle to see what you want from the club. You give the impression that you’d rather they’d condemned the move immediately but done nothing about it.

The fans have spoken, the club listened and got the result the fans’ wanted – that’s a good result in my book.
