Flawless Celtic flourish

471

Do anything nice last night?  The consequences of what took place at Celtic Park are profound, but there will be plenty of time to discuss them later. For now, let’s concentrate on the small matter of how this result was achieved.

The record books will show 5-0, but there was more to this game than the thumping it turned into. For the first 30 minutes, Astana pressed Celtic high, unsettling our natural game, while forcing the occasional error. We didn’t have the luxury of time and space normally afforded us in domestic football.

This was a worrying period, although there were promising glimpses. Scott Sinclair latched into a loose ball seven yards from goal 3 minutes into the game, but could not find the target. Moments later James Forrest pitched a perfect cross for Leigh Griffiths. Celtic Park stood ready to celebrate, but again, the target was missed.

Those moments aside, the early flow of a game was not going to plan, but Celtic continued to pass the ball with precision, switching play , looking for space. Tom Rogic’s trademark surging run provided the breakthrough. His cross-cum-shot would have gone narrowly wide, but for the intervention of a disorientated defender, who turned the ball into his net.

This goal encapsulated the real chasm between the teams. Astana were good in possession and looked fitter in the opening period, but Celtic had no real weaknesses. A poorly marked corner one minute after the opening goal was the only genuine chance the visitors had all evening. Whereas Celtic probed for, and found, many vulnerabilities in their opponents.

Forrest foraged on the right, Sinclair was scintillating on the left. Ntcham’s neat passing swung the pendulum Celtic’s way, as Griffiths grew into the game through the middle, while Brown bossed proceedings in the no. 6 role.

Olivier Ntcham is still finding his feet in Glasgow, but he will be difficult to dislodge as Scott Brown’s central-mid partner. He’s a different player than Victor Wanyama, but Victor wasn’t as effective, this early, in his Celtic career.

Remember, Olivier has played very little senior football, only 37 games before his summer transfer. Practically everything he does right now is new. Wait until he realises he’s good enough to own the pitch.

You mentioned Graham Carey , he was on our books before being picked up by St Mirren.

Last night my son fully realised this is what it means to be Celtic . He had a tremendous time at the game, , the result and jumping about in the standing section brought home to him how great it is to be a Celtic fan. He and other Celtlic fans under 20 , have only experienced the best of times watching our team and long may it continue.

I saw a sleekit sev in work today , Art of war knows who I mean, who has lost 4 stone in weight , i had to stop myself asking him is his weight loss been caused by Brendan and our team. He never wears green and struggles to mention our name.

  9. I have 2 cousins who grew up in the same street as Lulu. I think they’ll be changing their mind about her after that performance. I assume she reckoned that the English wouldn’t realise what she was revelling in. Sad wee bigot to this day.

If you didn’t know better, she could have been describing the Odour as some kind of Women’s Institute crossed with the Suffragettes………………….and her references to her Granda ( who granted had done a lot of bird) were laced with attitude.

More franking of form, if it was needed. Which it definitely isn’t.

  16. I was worried about the Hun red card.If it had not been recinded, you can bet that Stokesy would have been punished as well.Tony much more important than that nonentity,Jack.Another red card knocked back today was Goncalves, who is now able to play against the Huns at the weekend. To those getting their knickers in a twist over this, forget it.The damage was done, gubbed at home to the Hibees.

I saw on SSN tonight that Armstrong had signed a new contract.Nothing anywhere else.Is it duff news?.

Where about in Zante…going to Tsilivi in a couple of weeks and will be looking for a tim-minded pub… or two.

  18. Heard an interesting story about how Dunfermline acquired the nickname The PARS. Apparently during the war a lot of naval workers from Plymouth were transferred to Rosyth shipyards to work on the war effort. Many of them were Plymouth Argyle fans but went to watch Dunfermline while stationed in Fife and became known as Plymouth Argyle Rosyth Supporters (PARS). As I’ve just logged on and noticed a reference to PA, I hope this hasn’t been covered already :-))

Voguepunter…those people are never happy…always ragin’. They must hate the fact that the chapel sits proudly on the main street with the Celtic forward line lookin’ doon oan them…at least that’s what my old man used to say… :-)

Further to the references about Ryan ‘Malky’ Jack ex of the Dons.

I only ever noticed him at the end of our game against the Dons last February when he was having a go at Liam Henderson , with Liam pointing out the scoreboard then Jack being restained by one of his team mates.

Liam stood his ground with Jack and the latter was beelin which added to my pleasure of winning that game.

  22. When I watch an EPL team, which is not very often, I just can’t see what all the hype is all about, watched Everton tonight and they are brutal, spent a serious amount of cash and I would be upset if we didn’t blow them off the park.

We will get a chance in the CL this year against brit opposition I think, brit teams cover five groups, so it looks odds on, but we are just gonna have to beat what’s put in front of us.
