Fletch lives!

335

And we’re back to 2009.  Steven Fletcher was wanted by Celtic in January that year.  The misinformation about why he ended up going to Burnley for £4.5m instead of Celtic is legendary, and we all like a legend, so there is no need to trouble anyone with facts.

The talent Scottish football fans knew he had back then has been confirmed by the 11 years he spent in English football.  If he accepts Celtic’s offer of a contract he will join former Hibernian team mate, Scott Brown, as one of the older members of the squad.

I read some are a bit animated about what this means for the other strikers but I don’t see it moving the dial much.  No first team player will be sold on the back of recruiting a 33-year-old.  If he arrives, we would have a better-than-Lewis-Morgan option in the event all other strikers are unavailable for a cup final or European game.  And remember, it is prudent to have as large a squad as reasonably possible this season; fixtures could be delayed, then come thick and fast.  This is a low risk cover option with no particular strategic importance.

Loving this #9inarow challenge idea; a 9k run is on the agenda later.  Maybe run past a few Darwin Award pubs, if you know what I mean……..

I have said to many friends & family that Lewis at Aberdeen reminds me of a young Scott at Hibs … when young Scott went head to head with Neil (Neil in the black & green stripe strip) then when Scott tried to “do” Bobo … Lewis reminds me as well of a young Broony … and like Broony wasnt a Celtic fan growing up either … I agree, I would sign him and leave him up there for the season … then give him a shot, I think his Da would be up for it as well … DF will be delighted to see his Bhoy succeed … even in the hoops :-)

    Doesn’t excite, does it?

I’d try to buy Ferguson , he reminds me of a young Scott Brown, arrogant and not wiling to stand down ,

    Or it seems, lock down….?

  5. Thanks for the info on the offside.Still be raging if it was us.A couple of centimeters of a shoulder, when both your feet are well behind the defender, just rips ma knitting.

  6. Ron- I am hoping the same, TBH I think Fletcher would be a handy option ,any other quoted ones don’t excite me,

  7. I posted last night i would happily accept Fletcher. Loads of EPL experience, would be ready to go, no bedding in, give us a different option, good hold up link up play. Was Sheff Wed bed player up until Christmas then got injured, Sheff Wed dropped like a stone. Never had pace to lose, his game is his technical ability to hold the ball in link up, very game intelligent in his head. He’d even be a help in defensive set pieces.

If its just haggling over a year, surely a year, year optional with a bonus if we win 10 and don’t take up the extra year, im sure both parties could come to some arrangement that suits club and player.

  8. BT … ah well the Tim Reaper has just proved Lewis Ferguson is rubbish with an Ivan Sproule hat trick …. whooft

Tenuous link surely … (I realise Broony was instrumental in that game, in fact a sort of tenuous link)

Not sure we were judging Lewis on a single game … likewise Broony

  9. Players not following their clubs protocol regarding socially distancing, should face the sack.

They are highly paid individuals with a social presence and responsibility.

They think they are above the law and should,d be treated differently.

    Utterly disgraceful.

  10. Lewis Ferguson kicked on a ton last year- it’s always a gamble but, if he kicks on again this year, we might miss our window before English clubs start noticing.

I don’t advocate many Scottish players because we have had a very poor crop during the first 15 years of this century but there are some signs we are improving our youth development recently

I see Ferguson at Aberdeen and, to a lesser extent, Campbell at Motherwell as prospects- no guarantees but well worth a look.

  11. I don’t think I ever posted Lewis Ferguson could lace our captains boots … here is the words

“Lewis reminds me, as well, of a young Broony”

But am pretty sure we can all read a post differently

  12. SFTB 11.04pm

I would say Lewis Ferguson (outwith) the champions is the most improved player in the SPL in the last 2 seasons .. from playing 50 or 60 games for Hamilton as a teenager then establishing himself pretty quickly with Aberdeen … if Celtic aren’t looking I would be disappointed… but I will leave it to Neil & his team … but for anybody to dismiss him as “rotten” or not good enough … well that’s where you just …. say, ah well … probably same punters standing up for Broony who slagged him for many a year ,…

  13. Lewis Ferguson is being judged because he has had a chance. He plays competitive football.

Is he any better than our youngsters who played well against Hibs.?

Generally, do our young players have to leave Celtic to get a competitive chance ?

Hopefully 5 subs should help, but this definitely needs addressed.

  14. Bad,

Its not so much the VAR,it seems to be the guys sitting in the studio, deciding, that cause the problems. How much of an anally retentive Jobsworth would you have to be to chalk that goal off tonight.

The Pundits, equally disgusted, saying it should be ex players deciding. Its giving VAR a real bad name.

  15. Lewis Ferguson,on the many times I have watched him,has never impressed.

And I am very easily impressed.

  16. Really, seeing the overweight Morelos, seeing how badly he is playing, and his form since January, his shocking disciplinary record, just who would be tempted to buy him, really.Thats from someone who would be glad to see the back of him and his goals for the scum.

  17. Greenpinata

It’s a fair point but unless they get the development time at Celtic, then their promise is not going to be translated into achievement.

Kieran Tierney and James Forrest were good enough when young and Karamoko will be too but I worry that Robertson and Welsh, who also have a chance, will not get enough game time and they need it. Even players as good as McGregor, Ajer and Christie had to go away to become better players. Defenders, in particular, need even more time but we are chasing the ten and a manager would have to be very brave to put them on often enough to complete their development

We need to see who from the other promising reserves- okoflex, Harper, Ofalabi, O’Connor, Hjelde etc; as well as the 2 keepers- Hazard & Doohan can go away and manage to come back better

  18. I looked through our development team and i see no one better than our best 14 players. They have to be ready both physically and technically. Dembele has the best technical ability but doesn’t have the physicality. Like Ajer and Christie the best should be loaned first with a view to a 1st team place, the gap is to big for the current development players.

Don’t think their is a gap?

The beauty of the Irn bru cup is we get to see what level, collectively these players are.

Over the last 3 years these players have been playing at top end league 1 and between mid table championship.

That is a considerable jump to playing for a team going for 10 in a row and having to win every week in a league above.

If some are doing really well then by all means bring on as a sub when games are won but if Walsh for example is not considered better than Nir Bitton then its harsh on Bitton not to play, you have to earn the right to play.

    Good morning from EH 56,

Ferguson is a yes for me, he has the raw talent to be a cracking player.

Striker wise, I would be more than happy with Griff, Paddy Eddie and Fletch. Bayo looks to be injury prone and off form too. Much over the past two years and we look like we are going to move him on.

Aberdeen should fine the hell out these guys, how much money time and effort wasted so they can be cool. Selfish and silly.

Not a chance anyone will pay more than 5m for morelos, attitude and weight are a huge problem for the media to continue the bigging him up, he is an average player in a poor team, nothing more.

  20. I assume we all heard that CRASHING noise?

It wasn’t thunder or rocks falling down the Rest and Be Thankful.

It was Morelos’ balance sheet value tumbling faster than McCoist in the penalty box.

OK. I only saw 1/2 the game, but I did manage to catch a fleeting glimpse of the crown jewel in the Govan strong room.

So the Huns have spent “mullions” (credit Alec Rae) in anticipation of hitting the lottery with the corpulent Columbian.

However it seems that they have only three numbers up. Morelos will be happy to grace the bench in isolation, while spending his considerable salary on luxury cars and deep fried Mars bars. The other newly signed high earners will be hoping there’s enough left in the bowl to go round the dressing room.

I won’t hold my breath waiting for the headlines of Gerrard losing the dressing room. Instead the media will continue to peddle the fabled bids and interest from round the globe for the rotund recalcitrant.

I hope he is still around on October 17th and is given the chance to continue his goal scoring form against us.

  21. Good morning from a grey skied but dry Garngad

Melbourne mick and Big Jimmy get on here.

    Bring on the Kilmasonic.

Morelos did look overweight so why would anyone pay more than a couple a million knowing he has to spend time shedding weight.

Feck them let’s get another couple of players in ourselves.

LF is being judged because he has took his chance … his stats are good, he performs in the league we play in … by the way I was agreeing with BT on the similarities with a young Broony at Hibs, we both could be very wrong but LF “could” be even better with better players around him …. I have a feeling a few English clubs might take a punt on him and at the age he is probably ahead of (dare I say) … John McGimn when he was playing in Scotland :-)

  23. Good morning, friends and a Big Happy Friday from a dry and bright East Kilbride.

The news of the positive testing of Aberdeen players is concerning enough but is more of a worry if it was a result of the group of players not following the FACTS. The underlying message to all top teams is that this season’s title might go, effectively, to the Last Team Standing. Aberdeen will have to play their next 3 games without those 8 players. That could quite easily happen to ANY other team over the coming weeks so I hope that the Celtic Bhoys are absolutely clear on what they can and cannot do.

  24. Alex Rae was and is ” QUARK” from Star Trek….simples.

Bayer Leverkusen were better all over the pitch than Sevco, and Bayer should have been at least 2 or 3 up by half time.

The Colombian throat cutter hardly kicked a ball during the 76 minutes that he was on the pitch. He dived about as per usual whenever anyone went near him…Cheating throat Cutter.

The Hun goalie McGregor was shocking trying to kick the ball upfield and some of his “passes” went straight to the opposition and/or out of play/and or straight to the opposition goalie.

The Bayer striker completely lost and out paced the Hun captain ” Taverneir” at their goal.

IF we can inflict a heavy defeat on The Hun in the first game this season…they will crumble…IMHO ?

  25. Question…How did Lewis Ferguson play against the Huns last week ?

Answer…He was rank…like the rest of his team mates.
