Football comes at you quick when losing money

303

Five years ago, Jack Ross took his Championship St Mirren team to Celtic Park for a Scottish Cup tie and impressed everyone.  Brendan Rodgers thought they were the best domestic team to play there all season.  I thought he was a manager for the future.

Within weeks of leading St Mirren to promotion, he moved to the disaster zone that was Stadium of Light, Sunderland.  Sunderland had just experienced the CEO magic of former Rangers chief, Martin Bain, and had been relegated for the second successive season.  He took them to the League One play-off final but having sold their star striker and with Aiden McGeady carrying an injury, they lost.  He was sacked a few months into the new season, again in a play-off spot.

Of all the bizarre sackings in football, Ross’ losing his job at Hibs, shortly before they were due to play Celtic in last season’s League Cup Final is up there.  Hibs then became the disaster zone club.  He should have been a good fit at Dundee United, but after losing 7 to AZ Alkmaar, 9 to Celtic, and worse, 3 to St Mirren, he was sacked this morning.

It took less than 4 weeks to go from the height of taking a first leg lead against AZ, to the loss of the next five games, scoring once and conceding 24.  Earlier this month, we discussed, “[United’s] smallest loss in the last three years was £2.52m, their highest turnover in that time was £3.9m.  Football comes at you quick with losses like that.  This will not end well.”

  4. I am going to be a contrarian,

the 5 goals in the cup final v queens park in 1892 they were the most important goals in our history

    that started it all,

the bbc didnt even cover the game,

  5. Poem from 1894. From the Shamrock Net.

A poem in praise of the first great Celtic team.

    THE CELTS

Brave Irish hearts – staunch, leal and true –

To dare and do, I ween,

With prowess stout as Sarsfield’s boys

    Who wore the jackets green;

    You bear aloft to victory

    In many a stormy fight

The dear old flag, the brave old flag,

The flag of green and white!

    Renowned is Hampden’s “Old Brigade”

    With proud, striped flag unfurled

    And hardy lads, my Renton

    “The champions of the world!”

But not from from Wick to Solway tide

    A match you’ll find, I ween,

    For the dazzling combination

Of the wearers of the green.

    The Warriors fight in red-and-white,

    The Rangers love the blue,

    Dumbarton bold sport black-and-gold,

    Hearts to maroon are true;

But these and more in combat fierce

That stirred the soul to see,

Before the might of “jackets green”

Were forced to bow the knee.

Come, see my heroes tread the sward,

    M’Mahon in the van, –

How stout, how sure the brave defence

    Of Jerry, Joe and Dan!

    Now Madden scores, now Blessington

They reck nor hurt nor fall,

And, oh the shout that echoes out

    With Kelly on the ball!

Then praise we all this gallant band,

    Who never know fatigue,

The stoutest hearts in all the land –

    The champions of the League;

Victors in grim and stirring fights,

    And heroes to their belts!

They’re worthy sons of Irish sires,

    And “bould, bould Celts”.

  6. Now I really have to join my wife for a good old film – in black and white, preferably.

  7. Billy Gilmour to Celtic? why not , he’s gallus and got a bit of arrogance! (not from a reliable source)

  8. Oh dear, I just noticed that good old DALRIADABHOY was on, so I will wish him good night with a Celtic poem.

    THE CELTIC:

You know your heart has blackened

When tears are only shed in dreams

I remember water pure and free

    Flowing from her mountain streams.

The smell of heather, the hum of bees,

Atlantic waves breaking on her shore.

    Before Trevelyan cast his net

    His catch, An Gorta Mor…

We had no time to mourn the dead,

as we set sail for Broomielaw

Far up the Clyde to Glasgow

A Solemn March on feet red raw

My father’s soul torn from his heart

The once burning fire a dying ember

His tears fell for my mother

Her love and grace we would remember

We settled down in Calton to begin to live once more,

    In wretched sties of squalor,

    Irish fever behind our doors.

Now forty years have passed since then,

We’ve risen up above the shame,

Helped by an Irishman with vision

    Brother Walfrid is his name.

With a lions heart and just intent

He raised a people to their feet

Instilled pride and hope to thousands

On those impoverished East end streets

My father’s gone he’s buried here

My own son now bares his name

I feel his spirit by our side

as we walk to see the game

He’s since been called to London that devoted Marist brother

But in his wake he’s left to us a

    Club that’s like no other

Yes I speak of Glasgow Celtic

The now famous Green & White

Those peaceful souls of years gone by

Hail the Hoops with all their might

And when you rise to feet at Celtic Park

    you’re never on your own,

There are millions rising with you to sing “You’ll Never Walk Alone”

    Peter Sloan

  9. Jimmy Johnstone

    by The Holy Poet..

He joined Celtic, aged thirteen years, a ballboy at the game

The youth team knocked upon his door, his skill had gained him fame

The bhoy from Viewpark Uddingston, would stake an early claim

To become the greatest ever Celt, the world has ever seen.

A Glasgow bhoy, a Celtic man, he always knew he’d play

In front of sixty thousand fans in Pradise one day

He played the game to entertain, enthralling all the crowd

And in return, the fans would sing, his praises loud and proud.

Our winger showed his trickery, his guile and his strength

His attitude, his balance, poise, displayed at every length

He’d jink around the same man twice, that’s how he got his name

He’d twist and turn ’til they were dazed, then atke them on again.

Diminutive in stature, a Colossus on the field

He stood a measly five feet four but this man would never yield

His fiery, ginger, curly hair and mesmerising moves

Inspired at an early age to play the game he loves.

His dazzling skills and flight of feet were wondrous to see

Defenders terrified of him would want to turn and flee

They knew they’d never catch him, so kicked him as before,

A Foul! He’d just take the ball and go back in for more!

His football became legendary, across the globe did span

The attitude he always showed, to please the paying fan

By skipping past the midfield men and flying down the wing

From there he’d beat them yet again, and his cross, a goal would bring.

Jinky relished every game and wore his shirt with pride

Bobbing, weaving in and out, he’d star in any side

A master craftsman of his art, always brave and bold

A solo genius, never rich, was worth his weight in gold.

Diseased with Motor Neurone, he sadly passed away

The legacy he left to us, the wonders of his play.

Lord Of The Wing, we thank you, you made that No 7

All your own and wear it still, in your Paradise in Heaven.

  10. The poem, The Immortals, was written by Irish poet, Peter Makem, in September 2010 on the 25th anniversary of the passing of Jock Stein.

And a framed copy of the poem was presented to Lisbon Lion, Bobby Lennox, who accepted it on behalf of the club, by Peter and the Association of Irish Celtic Supporters’ Clubs.

    THE IMMORTALS

Because the Lisbon hour was taken

    Parkhead is changed forever.

By dawn, by day, by evening star

The deed that can not be undone

    Spreads itself along the way.

The names are there, their names are read,

They who sailed on fortune´s tide,

They who made return in glory-

    Gemmell and McNeill and Johnstone,

Craig and Murdoch, Wallace, Auld and Stein,

Fallon Sean and Fallon John and Simpson,

Lennox, Clark and Chalmers, all in line.

And who can compare with them

That leader and his home-made men?

    Who can overcome their fame?

    Great as deeds at Bannockburn,

    Great as any Scotland sent,

Recall again their do and dare,

Recall the wave on wave defiant,

The surge of that relentless hour.

And time can never take the day,

And time can never take the dawn,

As one by one they fall away,

And one by one they rise again.

  12. Interesting to see how our board have undersold the champions league briefs by comparison to rangers.

It looks like the new co will take more than 30% more per regular ticket than Celtic on average.

15-40% more than Celtic will get for various ticket types. This means they will more than compensate for their 18% smaller stadium capacity.

Will our dumb board never learn how to run a proper club.

  16. Just catching up. Re. Scullybhoys photo of the Lisbon Lions, I think it is correct to say that it was the last time they lined up on a football pitch. I am getting on, but if my memory serves me rightly, I think Ronnie Simpson came on to the field with the rest of the Lions but did not play in the game. In fact, I do not think Big Jock ever played the full Lions team ever again after Lisbon. I believe he never wanted anyone to say they beat the Lisbon team.

  17. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

So Nick “Sevco never lose on my watch” Walsh it is then?

I’m sure the boys at Boclair Academy will be sharing friendly, innocent japes all week with Mr Walsh about what they expect from Nasty Nick at the weekend.
