Football comes at you quick when losing money

303

Five years ago, Jack Ross took his Championship St Mirren team to Celtic Park for a Scottish Cup tie and impressed everyone.  Brendan Rodgers thought they were the best domestic team to play there all season.  I thought he was a manager for the future.

Within weeks of leading St Mirren to promotion, he moved to the disaster zone that was Stadium of Light, Sunderland.  Sunderland had just experienced the CEO magic of former Rangers chief, Martin Bain, and had been relegated for the second successive season.  He took them to the League One play-off final but having sold their star striker and with Aiden McGeady carrying an injury, they lost.  He was sacked a few months into the new season, again in a play-off spot.

Of all the bizarre sackings in football, Ross’ losing his job at Hibs, shortly before they were due to play Celtic in last season’s League Cup Final is up there.  Hibs then became the disaster zone club.  He should have been a good fit at Dundee United, but after losing 7 to AZ Alkmaar, 9 to Celtic, and worse, 3 to St Mirren, he was sacked this morning.

It took less than 4 weeks to go from the height of taking a first leg lead against AZ, to the loss of the next five games, scoring once and conceding 24.  Earlier this month, we discussed, “[United’s] smallest loss in the last three years was £2.52m, their highest turnover in that time was £3.9m.  Football comes at you quick with losses like that.  This will not end well.”

    Marspapa from last night.

Cheers and apologies for delayed reply.

    No idea who they selected.

Reading back it looks like a second 11 ?

In their pre-match planning I assume they thought it would be a comfortable night …

.. rest up the first 11 as the second string can easily take care of a division 1 team.

From the goal stats? Didn’t pan out that way.

    Wider context?

I don’t believe for a second this has any bearing on what they’ll do on Saturday.

But I think it will cast some doubt in their minds about the depth of their squad.

By contrast, IMHO, Ange is getting pretty close to the ideal “any 11 from 22” scenario most managers can only dream of.

  2. Just noticed that my bank account is showing a £3.60 transfer from Celtic Plc. Must be a dividend payment for my tiny shareholding . The Bunnet’s original share offer all those years ago.

I didn’t ask for it and would much prefer if it went directly to one of the club’s preferred charities. Celtic is an emotional investment, not a financial one. Other opinions are, no doubt, available.

Wonder what the debit/credit balance is for the Desmond family over the past 25 years ? And others with a significant shareholding.

  3. From BBC Sport online paper ‘gossip’

Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst says Alfredo Morelos has improved his attitude and work ethic and will be “important for us in the next months and this season” after showdown talks with the striker following his recent omission from the squad amid fitness and mentality concerns. Translation: not one single club have made an enquiry about him let alone made a bid, not even a ‘written’, ‘verbal’ offer from an unknown Chinese club!

    Be afraid Timmy.

    Be very afraid.

More total BS from you know who.

If challenged (they won’t be) they’d likely claim the ex-Chelsea interest drove the story’s prominence.

A quick internet search confirms the vanquished team (who did better than Dundee United) finished 7th in the fourth tier of German football.

Anyone recall the pre-internet days when you’d find out Celtic had beaten a German team 16-0 in a meaningless, useless preseason game …..

    ….. 2 days after the match !

    Jimdom – re shareholder dividends

Can you recall a reinvestment option from years ago?

I vaguely remember a scrip scheme – even tried to sign up to it but the technology got the better of me.

I’d be keen to explore that again if anyone knows more / uses it ?

  8. JIMDOM on 31ST AUGUST 2022 8:49 AM

If the company decides to pay a dividend to your sort of shareholder they have to pay you unless you told them you wanted to take up the option of having your dividends paid in new shares.

I would contact Computershare with your share certificate details and explain to them what you would like to happen in the future.

To be serious for a moment.

It’s nothing to do with nationalism or jingoism.

The title refers to John of Gaunt’s speech in Richard II which foretells and laments the passing of a once great age under the corrupt leadership of Richard II.

Which is a fairly good epitaph for Johnson’s leadership.

Did you know he’s a Turk?

This royal throne of kings, this sceptred isle,

This earth of majesty, this seat of Mars,

    This other Eden, demi-paradise,

This fortress built by Nature for herself

Against infection and the hand of war,

This happy breed of men, this little world,

This precious stone set in the silver sea,

Which serves it in the office of a wall,

Or as a moat defensive to a house,

Against the envy of less happier lands,

This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England,

This nurse, this teeming womb of royal kings,

Fear’d by their breed and famous by their birth,

Renowned for their deeds as far from home,

For Christian service and true chivalry,

As is the sepulchre in stubborn Jewry,

Of the world’s ransom, blessed Mary’s Son,

This land of such dear souls, this dear dear land,

Dear for her reputation through the world,

Is now leased out, I die pronouncing it,

Like to a tenement or pelting farm:

England, bound in with the triumphant sea

Whose rocky shore beats back the envious siege

Of watery Neptune, is now bound in with shame,

With inky blots and rotten parchment bonds:

That England, that was wont to conquer others,

Hath made a shameful conquest of itself.

Ah, would the scandal vanish with my life,

How happy then were my ensuing death!

    Jimdom – re shareholder dividends

Can you recall a reinvestment option from years ago?

    ——————————————————

BTB, Rings a very distant bell in my head. Would be happy to opt out of this dividend as I feel a tad embarrassed about receiving it. Dividends are for Shell, BT, etc, not what Celtic should be about .

The wider debate should be focused on those who are in Celtic for financial gain as opposed to the emotional investment.

  11. BACK TO BASICS – GLASS HALF FULL on 31ST AUGUST 2022 9:23 AM

Back in 2005 we were given the option to opt into the scheme, whereby any dividends would be paid in new shares.

I did it at the time, I don’t know if it’s still possible, I’d contact Computershare to find out.

  12. Last day of the transfer merrygoround, logged on to see what’s happening and . . . nothing. Who’s at Ross Hall? Who’s at the airport? The service stations? By tonight when the window slams shut, will we be stronger or weaker?

Or will it be a day of nothingness?

Here’s hopingt that, at the very least, Ajeti finds a new home.

  13. Would a 2nd string tonight be the worst idea ? Keep an insurance bench…

Siegrist, Ralston, Jenz, Welsh, Bernabei, Mooy, Turnbull, Haksabanovic, Forrest, GG, Abada.

If we’ve built a robust squad, we need to trust them.

  14. JIMDOM on 31ST AUGUST 2022 9:43 AM

When it comes to shareholders and dividends we need a mix of people and institutions looking for a return and individuals with an emotional attachment

  15. By the way, I don;t think Ange will be that radical so I think hearts in mouth moments against RC are expected tonight as they play their cup final ‘robustly’.

    HH

  16. No wholesale changes for me tonight, think a few already not in the squad but most have only been playing a game a week and even then changes through the 90mins … go as strong as we can, this team will want to keep winning and keep their places

Jackiemac not sure if the half a season legend has been given a mention yet
