Football doesn’t allow you to pick and choose

339

Europe?  A week ago I was all for it; there has been a lot of learning since.  We are not ready to make an impact on the latter stages of the Conference League or any other Uefa competition.  For me, the focus of this week is all about Easter Road on Sunday.  Football, however, does not allow you to pick and choose.

If Ange rested much of his first team against Bodo/Glimt tomorrow and suffered an even worse result than in the first leg, a new avenue of consequences would open up.  You cannot prepare property for an important game by losing a few days earlier.

Celtic must go out in the frozen north and give a professional performance, preparations for Easter Road will wait a few days.

  2. Something of a free hit tomorrow. I care little about it though I won’t say I want us to get beat. Sunday is the big game this week. Ange will go strong but it’s important to make full use of our subs bench in a timely manner if the tie gets away from us. Subs haven’t been a strong point so far under Ange. If there’s no need to get 90 mins out of Jota, CalMac or JJ, then don’t.

Spot on, Paul. You can’t guarantee success in one competition by “giving up” on another.

We could field a weakened team in Europe and still lose in the league.

I don’t accept that we can’t compete at this level in Europe. The tie is still alive and we should try to win it.

  4. Morning all.

I hope we play a strong team, with consideration for any knocks, niggles that may be exacerbated by the plastic pitch or other conditions.

I agree Bodo were fortunate and said it at the time.

They also showed me that they are more accomplished at Ange-ball than we are; keep it tight and professional while remembering that goals change games.

  5. Where is our self belief if we cannot put up a fight against the champions of Norway — plastic pitch or no plastic pitch?

Big picture — good practice for Livingston.

We have a big enough squad to spread the load.

Good result tomorrow means that Sunday is a much easier hurdle to climb.

One issue from last week was the fact that B/G were more than happy to take control / keep the ball and make us do the covering work

Not our usual game so more experience is required to get us more accustomed to this situation.

This morning I Posted about a CHUMP ( Big Packy ) who KNOWS that he was BANNED from this Blog some time, but who then CHANGED his Moniker to allow him to Post his CRAP once again ESPECIALLY the LIES that he had Posted about ME.

I am NOT AWARE of PAUL67 or any of The MODS reinstating this LYING BASTARD, but I suspect that he STILL wasnt welcome back on this Blog.

This other Creature ( JHB), decided to become involved this morning over a matter that had/has NOTHING to do with HIM…..and HE KNEW it…but he went ahead anyway.

CALL ME GERRY, as far as I am aware, you were NOT on this Blog when I was ” The ” VICTIM” of SCANDULOUS LIES and UNTRUTHS, maybe you were ?

However, I must ask YOU…. how you would REACT to Deliberate, Scandalous LIES being Posted on here, in relation to YOUR FINANCIAL Situation by the LYING SCUMBAG ” BIG PACKY”, or any other Chump on here who KNOWS NOTHING about your Private life etc ?

Nir Bitton must start, in my opinion, tomorrow night. He is needed in that midfield, a midfield that was played around by Bodo.

  10. jimbob71 & little Miss jimbob

Totally agree, I would like to see McCarthy and Welsh start as well – at least.

I would also start Bain in goal. Give some people 90 minutes in their legs.

They are first team squad members nd we may need them at full speed

    before long.

  11. How often have we seen a good result away from home in Europe being followed by dropped points domestically?

Eyes on the prize, and the only prize worth bothering about this season is the league.

    Markiebhoy,

I don’t know if McCarthy would last on the plastic (maybe he would?) but Welsh is a good shout to start too.

Not wholesale changes as that can disrupt the rhythm.

I’m afraid Bain gives me the fear!!!

  15. Agree with much of what has been said.

I’m keen for Celtic to win every game. However, if going out of Europe is the opportunity cost of a league win, I’m sure we can cope with that.

Weather and pitches may not be kind to us for the next few months.

Pity, as we’re a team who’d benefit from ideal conditions

  16. jimbob71 & little Miss jimbob

That’s all fair comment mate. Not complete disruption but a few here and there.

I’m just hopeful about McCarthy, it’s not like he’s overplayed!!!!

  17. jimbob71 & little Miss jimbob on

Did someone mention last week that their keeper is suspended tomorrow night following his yellow card.

  18. Do we drop points if we have had a poor result in Europe?

No slacking — we owe B/G a slapping.

Payback for all that Viking stuff we had to put up with back in the day.

Remember Dumbarton Rock / the Orkney transportations / Ragnar Hairybreeks / Largs …

    We owe them big time.

Plus they have more oil than us.

Saw that mentioned on 67 Hail Hail or ACSOM last night.

We didn’t really force the their keeper into a huge amount of saves last week – so more (on target) shooting from edge of the box rather than just running along the 18 yard line tomorrow please.

I enjoyed reading your list of desired improvements at Parkhead.

You started well, with the expansion of the stadium to 80,000. I think we’d all love to see that. I think its unlikely though as it might end the mad rush to secure a season ticket to guarantee attendance at the game.

Unfortunately, your list became less likely as it went on culminating in the quite farcical request for hot water. I suspect there’s more chance of a floating pitch and a retractable roof!

I say this with some authority. A year ago I contacted JPT on Twitter asking if the club would be ensuring that there would be sufficient soap and paper towels when crowds were allowed back, as, we all know there’s usually none left by HT. He didn’t respond!

  23. jimbob71 & little Miss jimbob on

Their keeper is suspended tomorrow night and his backup, Joshua Smits, has only play 81 games in the last 11 years!!!

    Very injury prone.

  24. I said at the time of the Raith game we had to play the strongest available team in every game after that.

Tweaks here and there yes. Wholesale change, unenforced, no.

We can change our main striker and one of our number 10/8’s without much disruption.

The business end of the season is here. We don’t rest.

You are a stranger to the truth. I don’t know whether it’s stupidity or dishonesty, but you repeatedly post comments which are simply untrue.

  26. DISCRETION IS THE BETTER PART OF VALOUR

    Paul quite correctly says:

    (1) “We are not ready to make an impact on the latter stages of the Conference League or any other Uefa competition.”

    (2) “The focus of this week is all about Easter Road.”

    (3) “Celtic must go out in the frozen north and give a professional performance, preparations for Easter Road will wait a few days.”

So how do you put together an approach and a performance to cover all the bases?

In my opinion you must start with a plan for (No2), and work back. The acceptance of (No1) will influence the personnel that take the field and sit on the bench in order to fulfil (No3).

It’s not rocket-science, it happens all the time in cup competitions down south. EPL, even top Championship, clubs regularly put out so-called ‘weakened teams’, knowing full well that they could be dumped-out by lesser opponents – a cost/benefit analysis is always carried out. The league challenge always comes out on top

I contend this must be the way to go in our case. Bodo are not a ‘lesser opponent’ and have shown at a packed grass-covered Celtic Park, in clement weather and with 50k plus Celtic fans in attendance, that they have the beating of us. So logically what will their accustomed to plastic surface, inside the Artic Circle in Bodo, bode for Celtic…..unlikely to be a repeat of the performance that blew away the Ibrox side a few weeks ago.

I say we set up for an ‘honourable’ draw, if possible – play one upfront and keep things tight. If Livingston & a weakened St Mirren can do it to us – we can do it to Bodo. Attempting to play our normal game at home didn’t work, doing so in sub-zero temperatures is a risk not worth taking.

We haven’t won a knock-out European tie post Christmas for eighteen years, one more will hardly matter when the league title and CL qualification is ‘in the bag’

come June. This is a realistic, not a defeatist approach.

Totally agree about shooting from distance. We have the players capable, let J J line a few up!

Who knows how the ball will react on a near frozen plastic pitch.

Who knows how the players will react in the same environment!!!
