Football in July, the brilliant Dave King

1046

Celtic play their fifth and final preseason friendly tomorrow before Tuesday’s Champions League qualifier in Armenia.  Five games feels light.  Legs will still be tired after each game, the prospect of 90 minutes in extreme heat will not be welcome.

Opponents Alashkert will have played only three preseason games before facing Celtic, each against lower league Russian opponents, so while they will cope better with the heat, their underlying fitness will not be better than Celtic’s.

In theory, Tuesday’s game should be welcomed as an opportunity to increase preparedness before the tougher challenges that lie ahead.  But this is football in July, when normal rules do not apply, as Lincoln Red Imps demonstrated two years ago.

Loved the lack of logic in Dave King’s written response to BBC’s Alasdair Lamont’s question on the Takeover Panel’s Contempt of Court proceedings.  “The [Takeover Panel] know that I live in [South Africa] and that it will require exchange control approval to move the funds to London.  They are just bullying me”.

The Takeover Panel’s rules (which exist for everyone) that an offer has to have proven funds in the UK is not an actual impediment.  If King’s funds were not in the UK, he would be unable to pay for the shares three weeks after the offer is made.

Takeover Panel rules merely bring the date cash is required forward by three weeks.  Still, I am sure this talk of bullying will make the Takeover Panel think twice before crossing King again.

This guy is beyond brilliant.  He is behaving like this openly.  You know how it ends.

  1. Suarez gives guy shielding ball out of play a painful dunt in the back.

I think the shielding ball out of play is often obstruction.

Would like to see a limit on distance players are allowed to shield ball out of play before obstruction called.

Sorry to hear about the setback in your treatment, but pleased to hear you are now being treated under a new regime. One area the NHS is ahead of the game is in innovation so hopefully you will benefit from any newer approach. You do, we all do.

  5. Yesterday’s blog brought back many memories for me of the time I spent in Yorkhill and Mearnskirk Hospital for kids

Besides cure INV my spinal meningitis they had a weekly cub group that cub group got me into the newly formed St Benedicts group in Easterhouse around 1956-7. There were so many lined up to join that they asked have you ever been in the cubs before and that was my ticket in

I am with Big Wavy. King will suffer no consequences.

What action would be taken? I don’t think King will get any prison time.

They can ban him from being a director of a UK company. No Problem King stands down and appoints a Nominee but still pulls the strings.

The Cold shoulder will have little effect as King has the “shaky Hand” and a fellow mason will not turn the back of a brother in distress.

King has little UK interest outside of Sevco, so no difference to him.

Sevco having accepted his resignation will suffer no sanctions.

What is possible to harm this person when he has the support of the RRM in the MSM? I also note that he has never been asked to explain himself to the Football Governing bodies. No doubt Police Scotland and the Justice system is full of his adherents.

Nothing seems to happen to him

  8. Great free kick by France and even better run by Varane for goal.

Hope someone on our coach ing staff takes note as our dead balls are mince.

The ball was played in with curve and pace and Varane attacked ball with a great diagonal run and header.

Ours are generally floated like balloons to our opponents while we stand and watch.

Couldn’t place the big haddie playing upfront in place of Cavani . Stuani –and then it clicked . He played 4 seasons at Reggina . Scoring once and that was from a had to be taken again penalty . He had missed the first one . He hasn’t changed much !!!!

  10. FAN-A-TIC on 6TH JULY 2018 3:45 PM

agree re our set pieces , free kicks and corners why we don’t have our tall defenders attacking the ball from 18 yard line other than standing on the 6 yard line beats me.

  11. Sanctions against Dave he Oppressed will come from beyond the SFA.

He clearly still thinks that he is the Teflon Don & has not changed his modus operandi.

Still the same as he was when the immortal Sotuth African judge pronounced him to be a

    Glib & Shameless Liar.

The SFA used to wlecome him, then they became indifferent to him & now – in the new enlightened era some of them may hand ring in private, but they will stay locked in the lavvie, feet on the pan, till the fight is over.

I honestly don’t know if his escapades as a corporate cheat vis a vis control of Sevco could lead to sanctions, but he is no stranger to dark dealings & dishonest manouvres. Since it was City of London police who rumbled the previous regime at Sevco, it might be the same mob recruited by the Financial Ombudsman or such.

  12. Talking about the best wee country in the world…

Uruguay Little known fact – thanks Wikipedia

Uruguay is ranked first in Latin America in democracy, peace, low perception of corruption,[10] e-government,[11] and is first in South America when it comes to press freedom, size of the middle class and prosperity.[10] On a per-capita basis, Uruguay contributes more troops to United Nations peacekeeping missions than any other country.[10] It tops the rank of absence of terrorism, a unique position within South America. It ranks second in the region on economic freedom, income equality, per-capita income and inflows of FDI.[10] Uruguay is the third-best country on the continent in terms of HDI, GDP growth,[12] innovation and infrastructure.[10] It is regarded as a high-income country (top group) by the UN.[11] Uruguay was also ranked the third-best in the world in e-Participation in 2014.[11] Uruguay is an important global exporter of combed wool, rice, soybeans, frozen beef, malt and milk.[10] Nearly 95% of Uruguay’s electricity comes from renewable energy, mostly hydroelectric facilities and wind parks.[13] Uruguay is a founding member of the United Nations, OAS, Mercosur, UNASUR and NAM.

The Economist named Uruguay “country of the year” in 2013,[14] acknowledging the innovative policy of legalizing the production, sale and consumption of cannabis. Same-sex marriage and abortion are legal. Uruguay is regarded as one of the most liberal nations in the world, and one of the most socially advanced, outstanding regionally,[15] and ranking highly on global measures of personal rights, tolerance, and inclusion issues.[16]

Celtic legends will pay tribute to former Hoops midfielder Liam Miller in a match to take place in his native Cork.

The game will be held at Cork City’s Turner Cross stadium and will see a team of Manchester United legends take on a team made up of Celtic and Republic of Ireland legends.

The match is to take place on Tuesday, September 25, and will include Henrik Larsson in the Celtic/Republic of Ireland mix managed by Martin O’Neill.

Others involved in the game will be Roy Keane, Paul Scholes, Rio Ferdinand, Jaap Stam, Robbie Keane, Damien Duff and Kevin Kilbane.

The 7,200 seater stadium is likely to sell out and more legends are to be announced soon.

My recollection is that if you are close enough to play the ball, it is shielding. If you are too far away to play it, it is obstruction and a foul. Refs seem to cut the obstructor a lot of slack.

Back in the early 60s there was a family in our close , the 3 boys used to sing that song but ended it with Old Langbank

They used to go there on holiday – didn’t know it at the time but it was a place for poorer kids to holiday – dad had left their mum and them. But of course then we were all in the same boat. Your little song brought the memory of the lads flooding back

Mahe … cheers … I try not to take this place (or myself when I’m on it ) too seriously … dont always manage that, but I try. Just dont like when posters attack other posters personally … we should be able to disagree, and have a bit of fun while doing so ….

Bada … I agree… should be a fresh start after the group stages….

Silver City … If I were FIFA king for 1 day, the two changes I would make would be:

    1. the offside rule. If any part of the player is inline with any part of the defender, he is onside. Would make for many more chances.

    2. if a ball is played forward, and the forward is trying to get it before it rolls behind for a goal kick, the defender must touch the ball if he wants to hold off the attacker (otherwise, to me, it is just obstruction). This would also increase the number of offensive plays …

  19. MIT

Ball in play 30 mins each half – every stoppage in play clock stops – would stop time wasting tactics
