Football, racism and prevarication

411

All it takes to make you feel less like you live in a leper colony is to watch European football and realise that problems of racism are not confined to Scotland or England.  I don’t know if many care in Hungary how their fans looked against England, going by the standard M.O. here, you suspect some will blame the media for highlighting that hoary old lie, the “tiny minority”.

The media and politicians certainly have a role in publicising racism, or covering it up, as has often been the case around these parts.  Memories of the 2011 League Cup Final stand out in particular, a moment when political affirmation of racist conduct pivoted behaviour in the stands that remains to this day.

This problem has touched every club but seldom been an issue for Celtic, you would literally need to go back decades.  When an incident happened in the 80s, fans took responsibility, which drew a clear line of what was acceptable, observed ever since.  Prevarication does not work as well.

Football is set to return to our stands and TVs this weekend.  We will see the results of prevarication.

Thanks, knew about that one, just happen to be in the city for a couple of days and wondered if the edin one was still there

  2. LOL – This is about Freedoms being taken away…. Swinney said, amongst other things, before Today obviously, and tellingly, a couple of weeks before Nicola came out with this Vaccine Passport, that they want to make 30 of the Emergency Laws permanent. I’m sure we just seen 31.

  3. Bands at the Apollo, The Stranglers was my first gig there and to me the most progressive (punk) band around. St Stivs, I had a quick look on Amazon for that book by Brendan Sweeney, 129 quid for the hardcover ☺ any suggestions where I could get one? This weekend I expect most of our international players will get a rest. HH ☘

Weirdly many folk will feel safer going to CP now then they would have. Even although it is likely to be less safe rather than if all non vaxed folks had to pay for and provide PCR evidence each visit.

Really sad day. Emergency powers here until 2023 and we don’t hear a whimper from Starmer about this issue. He is more grey than John major and will regret showing no balls on this. I expected better from Sarwar. Both of these will not be on the public eye until a year before the next election at the earliest. A loser sadly.

give you a loan of mine if you promise to give it back ?

  6. I wonder if any of the players who are not vaxed will be allowed into the stadium ?

Given so many sports people are not keen on it then it could be interesting.

  7. Let’s go back 9 months, everyone refuses the vaccine, and we’re all still in lockdown, 👍brilliant…..

Is it true red card Ross is anti-vaccine passport here in Holyrood but pro-vaccine passport in Westminster?

If it’s true, what a hypocrite! (even if it’s not true, he’s still a hypocrite.)

  9. Got to laugh at this idea that folk reckon their freedom is being stripped from them.

Your freedom to go to CP without being vaccinated or even wearing a face covering and therefore present a heightened risk of spreading the virus is no more valid than mines is to go to CP with the expectation the authorities and Celtic are doing everything possible to protect me.

British Labour in Scotland and the Scottish Conservatives both support vaccine passports at UK level but not in Scotland.

They will argue they’re objecting to the particulars but it’s the old Bain Principle in operation.

Coined by former Glasgow NE MP Willie Bain. Basically if SNP say white, Labour should say black.

Lib Dems oppose on general point of principle.

Surely a simple PCR test paid for by the individual 2 days pre game would render non vax people safer to attend than any others.

Or am I missing something ?

  12. Squire

Tell me what risk a no vax person with a recent PCR test presents to supporters ?

It is not a fraction of the risk you would have of catching it from jabbed supporters. Of that there is no doubt.

  13. Weebobbycollins on

Squire…👍 yes, that’s what it is. A wee bit pathetic…Palestinian flag? Oh well! Israeli flag!

  14. Best gig at apollo was John lydon/PilAnarchy had the building bouncing, all 3 balconies. a close 2nd was stranglers only 1 balcony.damned supporting t.rex was mental too lol .lots of good memories.Satellite city(was clouds) was good for new wave post punk bands.

Elton John and Lizzy were good too.

Mr chips at entrance was good too

  15. St Stivs, thanks for the kind offer. Done a bit of research there, seems it was published by CQN books ☺ I have emailed them to ask if they are still publishing it. HH ☘

  16. A PCR test only tells you that at the time of the test you were virus free. No use really.

Double vaccine at least gives protection against receiving and lessons the strain so in other words if everyone has double bubble hospitals will not be over run.

    Simples really

As I say go the full hog let employers and shops ask for this as well.

If no double vaccine then no work and get deliveries to your house.

Employers are footing massive Bill’s topping up wages and when furlough ends then a lot of people who refuse the vaccine will expect someone to pay them, stat sick pay of about 95 quid kicks in.

On top of all that the amount of days lost at work due to staff not taking vaccines but expecting full pay is astronomical.

    D :)

Yes you are, what about the rest of day to day life? Not just large events, without mass vaccination, we would still be locked up

  18. BURNLEY78 on 9TH SEPTEMBER 2021 9:03 PM

Just noticed players and other employees don’t need to have vax passports.

I would suggest that they would be accountable to a more structured and defined regime, enabling those players(athletes) to participate in games here, and in Europe, that higher regime includes latest test procedures, whereas vax shows when(if you did:-) have 2 jabs.

  19. Freedoms are being eroded as more state control over our lives is accelerated.

Wanting and probably getting temporary emergency powers made permanent is an alarming wake up call .

    Some of us predicted this.

I’ll give you another prediction:- ID cards ( Vacinnation passports ) will be extended to include personal details unrelated to Vacinnations.

And not so much of a prediction but an inevitability ;- There will be much more ” evening up the score”

Tell me what risk a no vax person with a recent PCR test presents to supporters ?

    ——-

I refer you to David66 at 9:26. The status as non-infected is valid only at the time of the test.

50000+ at Celtic Park. 90% not wearing a mask. A non-vax person has a higher likelihood of being infected, then carrying and transmitting the virus at any point before, during, or after a visit to CP than does a vaxed person.

I cannot believe I’m even having this discussion.

  21. This is a message to my fellow fans who have their goody two shoes on regarding these Vaxcine Passports.

Just you remember you’ve been sitting in the stadium for weeks with 60,000 and you didn’t know then who was vaccinated so don’t start yer P*SH now 👍

  22. Weebobbycollins on

Priti Ugly Patel will demand ID cards to protect us from bogus asylum seekers and illegal immigrants…

  23. And they will be standardised Globally – seems pretty obvious to me. If you cannae see what this means. I can’t Believe I’m even having this discussion. :D

    ——

So if I didn’t know you were sitting next to me without being vaccinated, I was at less risk than now I DO know you’re unvaccinated???

A level of logic I have only ever previously encountered from Huns.

I will vacate the dance floor for the moonhowlers.

  25. Well 53 years of attending Celtic Park will end on October 1st. 53 years of supporting, 10 years driving up from London most weeks ironically during the rangers 9 in a row. 53 years of incredible shared pain and glory. 85 years through 3 generations roughly 80% of all home games attended by me or my dad or my son.

Ironically we are set to have another great season in my opinion. A real season to remember….Up there with the best ever and I would love to be there. Make no mistake I would love it. I really hope all of those who are in favour of the vax and even the passports enjoy every minute of Angeball …..after last season we all deserve that.

I will find plenty to do on a Saturday / Sunday and save myself a fortune. Maybe the golf will improve at last, or maybe an extra hundred kilometers a week on the bike, or maybe giving my son ‘encouragement’ in the amateurs on a Saturday …..plenty of options.

Despite a commitment to review it and recent decent stats this decision will not be revoked by SG any time soon.

Aside from the vaccine point as someone who is ideologically in favour, indeed even dreams, of an independent centre left Scotland I do honestly think this could be a really sad day for reasons probably much more important than missing the Celtic.

I must remember to see if I can cancel my payment for the Europa tickets 😢 .

An absolute disgrace – are the Government going to refund my Season Ticket?

  27. Squire Danaher

what are the respective figures ? from a couple of sources please.

David66 – knowing the general public, i’d guess that companies, the gov etc will be shelling out a whole of a lot more dough on double-vaccinated chancers who down tools at the slightest sniff and the double-vaccinated who believe that they are bullet-proof than folk who have decided to shove the vaccine.

Why the feck should we be listening to anything the Scottish or UK govs tell us about this ? Their record (not to mention the profiteering) is feckin staggering.

If we’re going down the no-vaccine no job route, I’d propose some some US style litigation against the gov and the employers for the continual exposure of their staff to the pandemic, especially in the early day where there was feck all PPE etc.

Siding with the employers and the authorities ? UTLR indeed.

I wouldn’t say its goodytwoshoes Sutton.just weariness and a wanting to have a uniform system, where we know what to do to see our team safely for ourselves as well as others.

In my own experience I knew10 people who tested positive post match alkmaar game, some symptoms some not.there were also cqnrs who tested positive.

The 2 youngins i go to games with(72,84) now decline to go as no one gives a f about masking etc.and they had the same enthusiasm as you or i to get back to see Celtic.Sad,when all it takes is adherence to a few rules(wearing a mask). it may take time, somehow we have to structure rules to cope with the virus ongoing into the future.
