Football rights, an oligopoly working with a closed shop

573

What’s the value of the Scottish Professional League sponsorship package?  It’s whatever the highest bidder is prepared to pay for it.  £4m from Ladbrokes over two years is, therefore, a true value.  It’s down on the previous SPL deal, which was £2m from Clydesdale Bank, as it includes rights to the lower leagues, but this reflects variations in market and product conditions since that deal was signed.

The SPFL chose to go without a sponsor rather than significantly reduce their asking price, believing that it would be difficult to up-bid from a lower position than wait on the market returning to a position closer to the expected value.  As we don’t know what offers they received two years ago, and we’ll never know what subsequent value would have been received, there’s no point even trying to judge that decision.  The most we can say is that despite worries in some places of Armageddon, clearly member clubs believed they had enough in the tank to ride out some years without sponsorship money.

Everything is for sale (Ibrox naming rights for £1, anyone?), but you only take low value deals when you’re in a low value starting position – and there’s no point making moral ‘right or wrong’ judgements about people who make decisions from a poor starting position.

Unlike Scottish football’s broadcast deals, the values of which are determined by an oligopoly, league, shirt and stadium sponsorship is open to a very wide number of potential partners.

The real focus of our angst, should be against the behemoth who own the majority of football TV rights, pays a huge premium for the rights which are critical to its business, while exploiting the large barriers to entry to pay a pittance for Scottish football.

As TV consumers we pay some of the highest subscriber rates in the world as we are part of a very valuable TV market.  Our football clubs operate within the boundaries of this TV market but are excluded from competing in the lucrative section of that market by a closed shop.

An oligopoly working with a closed shop to the detriment of some competitors within the EU.  I cannot believe this is legal.

    LEAGUE RECONSTRUCTION IS COMING!

No it’s not. But you might have got that impression if you just read Keith Jackson’s Tweet last night, and then the 6am trailer-piece this morning, which said it was “back on the cards”.

When we finally got to read Keith’s actual Q&A with Neil Doncaster, a somewhat different picture emerged…

Here are some thoughts, if anyone is interested!

I don’t think they will get through the play-offs- I can see the ole Doonhamers hammerin’ another nail in the ole coffin.

  8. Anyone else find it bizarre that Paul (and by definition Celtic) get terribly upset about the sky deal while doing precisely nothing about it.

Im sure they expect the turnstyle fodder (sorry customers, sorry supporters) to do it for them…..

    Paul 67,

The lack of investment we receive in Scottish football is, imho, the biggest challenge we face.

I saw Roy McGregor the other day, as saying we need find a way to live with TV, and , at present,I think the odds are stacked in our favour.

Its a difficult one to address, but my solutions would be for SFA and SPFL to work together and

    1) Employ a couple of really top sports sponsorship guys / gals who have worked in Formula 1, Snooker etc and can bring in tens of millions, rather than 10’s of thousands

    2) Employ some to lawyers to challenge the BBC – they are state funded, but, over invest in EPL and Championship. Even if you cant win the battle, put them on the back foot, and ask , legitimate questions about does this amount to a state subsidy

    3) Employ a top media rights advisor, with a view to dumping either Sky or BT, or both. Look at new inhouse platforms, or give BT or BBC the rights for free on proviso we get prime time high quality production, it is accessable to all, and then make money out of track side or shirt sponsorship.

All of this is going to cost a bit of cash – probably £2m before you see a bit of return, but, long term will put Scottish football in a much healthier position.

Finally, for clarity, if I read the reports of the Ladbrokes sponsorship correctly, the figure is “BELIEVED to be just over £2m”

    As you would say, mmmmmmm

More to the point does Celtic PLC, the SFA or the SPFL? If they concur with you why are they not challenging it with a half decent lawyer. They all seem to like those chaps at Harper Mcleod, though they seem to have a very patchy record from where I’m standing.

I think fans across the country would welcome and support that kind of pro-active approach. But then what do the money paying fans know about anything eh?

It’s also a catch 22 which the clubs/league contribute to. I pay a sports premium to watch Celtic. It’s about £35 a month. If Celtic wasn’t on that I wouldn’t pay or take the option.

If Celtic was on any ‘independent’ line I’d again pay £35 a month to watch my team. But it’s the SPFL/clubs who sign up to have me hand over the bucks to Mr Murdoch. If they stopped this then the cycle might be broken.

Do we know how many subscribers in Scotland are happy to pay £35 a month to take the EPL? If it’s lots then the game here is scooped.

It would be great to see area around the stadium being used as you suggest. Was speaking to a friend recently. He was visiting relative in the states. While there went to a soccer game. He said local street food vendors were situated around the stadium serving top quality food. Crowds congregated before kick off and really helped build atmosphere. If Celtic could get their food outlets selling good quality street style food, it would be a sure fire money spinner.

  27. House needs told

IT IS two days since the Daily Record gave Nicola Sturgeon a gentle reminder she still has a country to run.

One of the most pressing issues facing the First Minister is the Police Scotland shambles.

Problems with the governance of the force have been a running sore since it was created two years ago by the SNP government – and these problems show no sign of improving.

The use of stop and search on children, closure of police stations and a turf war with the police watchdog have hit the headlines.

But it is armed officers on the streets that has caused the biggest headaches.

Chief Constable Sir Stephen House said last year that armed police would only be deployed where there is a threat to life.

Yet the picture we publish today on page two shows two PCs in Stirling carrying handguns as they go to Waitrose to to buy lunch.

This is not what the Scottish public want to see. These serious failings aren’t something that can be blamed on Westminster. Police Scotland was created by the SNP government.

Sturgeon inherited the mess from Alex Salmond and has shown a willingness to get tough with House. Last month she warned he could not be “a law unto himself”.

It looks like he needs another telling.

I must admit I’m a sky sports lover. Had it since way back when.

I watch tonnes of different sports, teams and events on it but if Celtic games were removed from it I’d drop it like the ol proverbial hot tottie.

If I’m honest though, every day is a day nearer ditching it for good though.

Who’dathunk that phrase would become so commonplace on a fitba’ blog?

Terry, disgustedly to Arfur: “Is there no situation you wouldn’t exploit for a profit?”

Arthur, horrified: “Lord, I hope not!”
