Football rights, an oligopoly working with a closed shop

573

What’s the value of the Scottish Professional League sponsorship package?  It’s whatever the highest bidder is prepared to pay for it.  £4m from Ladbrokes over two years is, therefore, a true value.  It’s down on the previous SPL deal, which was £2m from Clydesdale Bank, as it includes rights to the lower leagues, but this reflects variations in market and product conditions since that deal was signed.

The SPFL chose to go without a sponsor rather than significantly reduce their asking price, believing that it would be difficult to up-bid from a lower position than wait on the market returning to a position closer to the expected value.  As we don’t know what offers they received two years ago, and we’ll never know what subsequent value would have been received, there’s no point even trying to judge that decision.  The most we can say is that despite worries in some places of Armageddon, clearly member clubs believed they had enough in the tank to ride out some years without sponsorship money.

Everything is for sale (Ibrox naming rights for £1, anyone?), but you only take low value deals when you’re in a low value starting position – and there’s no point making moral ‘right or wrong’ judgements about people who make decisions from a poor starting position.

Unlike Scottish football’s broadcast deals, the values of which are determined by an oligopoly, league, shirt and stadium sponsorship is open to a very wide number of potential partners.

The real focus of our angst, should be against the behemoth who own the majority of football TV rights, pays a huge premium for the rights which are critical to its business, while exploiting the large barriers to entry to pay a pittance for Scottish football.

As TV consumers we pay some of the highest subscriber rates in the world as we are part of a very valuable TV market.  Our football clubs operate within the boundaries of this TV market but are excluded from competing in the lucrative section of that market by a closed shop.

An oligopoly working with a closed shop to the detriment of some competitors within the EU.  I cannot believe this is legal.

  1. Time to be ‘him outdoors’ for a while.

Have a good pre- match eve, y’all.

  2. Downforsam,

At the end of that article Murdoch spends €1B just to try and kill the idea off

  3. Oh, just caught that, Livibhoy.

    Seriously?

They were 5-1 up, Bayern needed to score 5 goals in the second half, and they had all downed tools, not just Messi, and they might have paid for it, too.

Wach the first leg, a genius was the difference, and there’s only one player in both squads who fits that description.

I’m not arguing, however, that Suarez hasn’t improved the team, although Balague on Revista De La Liga claimed Messi was instrumental in the front 3 clicking by agreeing to give up the free role he had been playing to accommodate the other 2.

I know, crazy money. Equates to Euro 83m per year. £36-38m for spl seems pretty reasonable to me.

  5. Downforsam,

Make it £43M, one each for all the teams and 1 to run administration

So my question is – why aren’t Doncaster et al going in with average viewing figures and saying this is what you pay for x EPL viewers so therefore each viewer is worth £y.

    We average 73.5k viewers so we’ll start negotiations at 73.5k X £y.

    ———————————————————————–

Your numbers are worldwide viewing figures?

I’m thinking there’s will be a shed load of people watchign the EPL in Europe and Asia, but not so many watching Scottish Football. So Sky might dispute the worth/viewer numbers?

  7. Downforsam,

I don’t think there’s anything communist about it, every member has an single membership, without them there is no competition

Yh even that, I only added the league cup to give us more games as the league would be 30 (16) or 34 (18) which clubs would think is not enough revenue a season.

  9. Oh and watch them flock to that vote, lots of old allegiance’s would quickly dissolve

Ok. By all means give clubs a more even share of the money, but only on the basis they meet a minimum standard, eg pitches have to meet a certain high standard. Will give a better quality product for viewing public. Therefore make it more appealing, worth more in the future.

    TonyD,

You will remember that Bobby played inside right pre Stein and, as such, would have worn the no.8 shorts.

Teams were numbered 1-11. depending on position played.

This was all before squad numbers.

Don;t think I ever said Suarez was better than Messi. I just said he was the missing link. I don;t think Messi – Neymar works without him. Messi is one of the all time greats but all greats need a hod carrier and link man.

There is no possibility of league reconstruction for season 2015/16.

Any reconstruction voted through can only be for 2 seasons in advance, so 2016/17 is the earliest we can do it if voted for before the start of next season.

If they don’t win promotion through the play-offs, Rangers will be in the Championship next season, no matter how often you talk up rule changes to stop it happening.

Bobby Murdoch has wore the no. 8

Ive got a picture of him somewhere.

Not sure if it was a one off though.

  18. Bobby Murdoch played inside-right – number 8 – for Celtic in the early 60s.

He scored in the 63 cup final 1-1 v Rangers wearing no 8.

It was only after the arrival of Mr Stein when he was moved back to right midfield and wore the no 4.

Der hun are rotten so there is no chance of the league being reconstructed to suit. Police Scotland would not be able to cope with the riots week in week out when they got thumped. They are miles behind hearts just now never mind any spfl team.

This is the reply I received after filing a complaint with the BBC:

“Thank you for taking the time to contact us.

I was sorry to read you were unhappy with the BBC Sport website. I understand you feel the fixture involving Rangers and Queen of the South is incorrectly categorised under ‘Scottish Premiership – Play-Offs’.

To address your concern; this is the same way the Scottish Professional Football League categorises this fixture, as can be seen on the SPFL’s official website:

    http://spfl.co.uk/playoffs/

    Kind regards”

Note: I wrote the BBC because I was confident of receiving a response. I would not be sure of the same courtesy from the SPFL. Someone else may wish to give that a try.

Bobby Murdoch started at inside right ie No 8 when he made his first team debut.

Big Jock moved him back to right half (No 4) and changed everything.

I’m not a big fan of Juve, but I think you could be right on this …

    Comparing the two …

    Goalkeeping … even

Defence …. Rube know how to defend … if any team can make it difficult for Barca, it might be Juve … chiellini is a tough, smart, dirty, sneaky, and very good defender … and leads that defensive unit well

Midfield …. hard to imagine, but Barca’s midfield is not what it once was, and Juve’s mid. is very strong … tough, can defend, Vidal supports the attack well

    Strikers…. barca obviously…

but Rube’s midfield may outplay Barca’s, and not sure how Barca’s defence will cope with Juve’s attack ….

The key might be how Barca handle Pirlo … if he plays, Juve plays. and if you sit off him, and give him time, he can still pick teams apart… but he is old, and never liked the physical side …. if you get in his face/kick him early, you can neutralize his impact … but not sure if Barca have the guys to do that.

If Barca decide to play, and let Juve play, and both teams go for it, it could be brilliant football to watch ..

and, as much as I dont like Juve, Buffon has been one of our generation’s truly great players, and seems like a class act, so I wouldn’t be too upset to see him get a medal.

The league is boring so something needs to be done, playing teams 4+ times a season is dire, 16/18 team top league with the league cup going into groups or something.

    Yep,and summer football.Job done.

  27. kevinlasvegas on

Yeah Juve have more steel and are more clinical for me. Gamesmanship will come into play. We know lots about the Italians.

  28. For our younger readers . . .

Up to the late 60s and early 70s, teams were listed as:

    1 – Goalkeeper

    2 – Right-Back

    3 – Left-Back

    4 – Right-Half

    5 – Centre-Half

    6 – Left-Half

    7 – Outside-Right

    8 – Inside-Right

    9 – Centre-Forward

    10 – Inside-Left

    11 – Outside-Left

    2-3 were Full-Backs

    4-6 were Half-Backs

    7-11 were Forwards

So every team had 5 defenders and 5 forwards.

It was not until the 70s when 4-4-2 came in that we began to talk of midfielders and strikers.
