Football the morning after the night before

We should commission a study into what happens to football teams immediately after a big game when they need to play a less illustrious opponent.  This week Kilmarnock got a better result against Celtic than Barcelona, and unlike the Catalans, Kilmarnock were away from home.

Cast your memory back five years for a better example.  Celtic beat Champions League holders, Milan, remarkably the only time the club have recorded a win against reigning champions, and met Gretna the following weekend, at Fir Park, Motherwell.  Gretna were promoted that summer but had cutbacks forced on them, as the financial gamble to promote them to the top flight.  Still, a James Grady free kick caught Artur Boruc on his heels.  It took goals from Chris Killen (remember him?) and Scott McDonald in the final three minutes to save face for Celtic.  Gretna failed towards the end of that season and were subsequently liquidated.

Celtic got the better of both Spartak Moscow and Benfica that season.

  1. Anyone else think the penalty decision on Saturday was laughable? The Killie player went down in stages with very little in the way of contact from any Celtic player. The reason for a lack of protest seemed to me to be that none of our players knew who was alleged to have fouled the guy. A really awful decision in my eyes.

And Izzy was clearly onside for his goal as well. Another really poor decision. Overall we got what we deserved from the game but it would be nice if referees/linesmen didn’t try to ensure that happened!

  2. Excellent performance from Celtic against St Mirren, before Barca game.Dreadfull performance against Kilmarnock after Barca game. Why ?

Could it be that the players were desperate to play against Barca, and others were angry when they didn’t play against Barca.I have said it before,Attitude,Attitude,Attitude.

‘” Juve are the definition of cheating ”

” the game was played under Juve rules—– score a good goal and it is declared offside -they score a goal that was offside but hey it’s declared to be on side . It’s called cheating -it’s the Juve way “

  4. Jeez, still with anti-Strach stuff on here?

I’d forgotten how much this site hates the manager than won 3iar, last 16 of the CL, whilst dealing with a hefty budget cut. Some things worked, somethings of course didn’t. Personally I liked his sense of humour, and his defending the team against the questioning by a massively anti-Celtic/pro-Rangers MSM that minimised his achievements and seemed desparate to put him under additional pressure.

If there was some collateral damage, green on green, vis a vis some thin-skinned Celts taking his off the cuff comments to heart, devil-dug owners or not, it was a price worth playing IMO.

BOBBY MURDOCH’S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS – FYI I’m not “worried” about us losing a game or two, I was merely posting a fairly established example of what Paul67 was alluding to.

As I say, not worried, quite the reverse. I told an English guy that’s just started working for me that I thought we could well get beat based on “the bounce factor” – he put a fiver on (think he got @ 14-1? might be wrong on that).

He seemed to think I might be miffed he’d bet against Celtic, I was like “no worries, at least one of us got a result”.

I checked the new blog to see if you had reposted, but youhadn’t,so I’ll reply to it here,if that’s ok.

I never suggested that either of us was worried about losing the odd game. I merely drew the allegory of a game of pool in the pub, where sometimes you play up to the standard of a superior opponent, then down to that of an inferior opponent.

FWIW,I get over a bad result very quickly.

Though the memory never leaves me. I doubt the memory of this particular game will leave my niece either-we have been working on her for ages, even got her a CQN oval badge (cheers,CSC),AND SHE HAD TO SIT THROUGH THAT IN BALTIC CONDITIONS SURROUNDED BY NUMPTIES!

BTW,that was just to the right of the GB,those who were there will know what I mean.

Jocky bhoy,I’m disappointed for a fair few reasons, but heyho.

    Life goes on.

Take care, bud. If you have a niece, take her to the game. I probably won’t have the opportunity now!

    Oh,wait-does bribery still work?

  6. Looking forward to the game tonight, St Johnstone in great form and we have a point to prove. I also have a seat next to GB seeing as the top deck closed.

    Hoopy Days!
