Football the morning after the night before

844

We should commission a study into what happens to football teams immediately after a big game when they need to play a less illustrious opponent.  This week Kilmarnock got a better result against Celtic than Barcelona, and unlike the Catalans, Kilmarnock were away from home.

Cast your memory back five years for a better example.  Celtic beat Champions League holders, Milan, remarkably the only time the club have recorded a win against reigning champions, and met Gretna the following weekend, at Fir Park, Motherwell.  Gretna were promoted that summer but had cutbacks forced on them, as the financial gamble to promote them to the top flight.  Still, a James Grady free kick caught Artur Boruc on his heels.  It took goals from Chris Killen (remember him?) and Scott McDonald in the final three minutes to save face for Celtic.  Gretna failed towards the end of that season and were subsequently liquidated.

Celtic got the better of both Spartak Moscow and Benfica that season.

    Ernie,

The reference to the joke was not aimed at you…..

But its a subject matter that is best not discussed on a Celtic blog, with everyone trying to score points against one and other, there are no winners on this subject matter only victims.

    Back to lurking now….

  6. Were Clyde playing too deep today? Was there not enough flowing football? Did they rush into tackles. Did McCulloch wade in with his elbows. I got that sinking feeling when the current buns went 2 up. Feel free to add your own water observations, you may even want to start a new stream.

  7. So, the great mitherin’ slummocks blootered their way to a win today down in the boondocks of the 4th. division ; the lard bucket can now get himself down to the nearest fat swamp and guzzle himsef sick in the company of his favourite plump accomplice, jabba, who will puff up their latest non-victory like it was Waterloo.

Please let the axe start swinging at them soon so we can be shot of this disgusting excrescence befouling the landscape with its arrogant sputtering.

    Chelski v ManUre. It’s like Hun v Hun. Bloat v Bloat. £££ v £££. Crap, really.

But I need my bread & circuses these days, otherwise I’d go mad, so I watch with a kind of vacant interest. On a par with which redneck’s got the fastest or handsomest pig.

You were the first on the savile bandwagon, first utterances out your mouth were the papal knighthood.

At the time I was asking the same questions I’m asking today, why are the failed protectors still in place, what is happening to the paying abusers investigation.

The Yorkshire issue has been buried under the savile paper seller and you appear to be pushing that agenda, to the extent the perpetrators have been dealt with and sometimes children think they are in control, no lies, just the obvious interpretation of your words in black and white so far I think 3 people have interpreted the way you say you intend, my issue is why that approach if why deliberate ambiguity on Yorkshire but not with savile ?

I’ll give them 3 or 4 months, and they’ll be FINISHED ……With lack of fluid cash flow, and losses mounting weekly (£6m as we speak), this rushed share sale is a desparate effort to raise funds……….and it won’t ……… Greengo will leave the mess to walturd & co, and they couldn’t manage an emery board ……it will take the zombies 10+ years to get back to the SPL, if they EVER do………

..about windfarms..yes but farting in the general direction of big propellers can be misleading and stinky. It’s best to burn loads and loads of coal to make the big propeller things go roon and roon. It keeps the hypocrites satisfied.

Rational thinking is not necessarily a prerequisite on the nightshift.

Many of us manage fine without it,while envying others who do have it.

Some of us just resort to good old-fashioned name-calling-or is that just me?

I was pointing out that there’s no link between Saville and what you are referring to. Some similarities and some differences but no links. The main difference is that the issues you’re referring are being dealt with at least in part and that some, not all, of the wrongdoers have been punished, unlike Saville who got away with it for 40+ years. Not only got away with it but was lauded by the great and good as a living saint.

Saville isn’t being used to cover up what went on in Yorkshire or elsewhere. It may have moved the spot light but that’s not because of some master plan or conspiracy. In truth the Yorkshire story was no longer newsworthy, it was off the front pages.

If anything in the long run the Saville thing will help sustain interest in all these cases because it shows that saying nothing and keeping quiet perpetuates the problem.
